All "lead" pencils (2H, 2B, etc.) that I ever used were hexagonal, not five-sided. Rarely, there used to be some cylindrical pencils, usually with art supply.
[doublepost=1542512760][/doublepost]

The more the number of sides, the more round the pencils were, to hold easily for prolonged use, without rolling off.

Since only one side is induction capable, I wonder how else Apple could've designed the Pencil 2.

For a great writing experience try a Palomino Blackwing. A little pricey. But not if you're into round pencils.

Yeah, a flat side on Apple's new pencil addresses two issues (charging and not rolling) and was a good decision.

I love Apple products and have been using them since I was at college in '89 but I'm in a real bind! It's getting to the point where they are just pricing me out the market. I make a reasonably good salary, I don't have any kids so have no outgoings to consider from that respect and would say I have a pretty good disposable income compared to those with children.

I have spent a small fortune over the years on Apple products and probably owned a good 90% of the stuff they have brought out but I have concluded that I can no longer sustain at the current price levels. I understand that prices go up over the years but in the last few years, it's no longer about inflation just significant price increases by Apple themselves.

The MacBook Pro 15" for example, which is always my main machine, now costs £2700 (512GB is non negotiable, 256GB just doesn't cut it in this day and age)...we're knocking on the £3K mark and that's a huge amount of cash.

Sigh....I have to agree with many others that I think Apple is now getting greedy and I really do believe that it's going to come back and bite them hard in the next few years.
Exactly my sentiments too.

Sorry if this has been asked but will this hinder ones ability to use a case? Ie. will I have to be constantly taking the iPad out of a case in order to charge?

The case itself will have to support the charging of the pencil, likely via a cutout on the top. Some do, some won’t, you will have to be alert when shopping for cases in this regard.

Who would've thought a day would come where we would be comparing "pencils"! :D
I am so happy for Steve that he doesn’t have to live this through - I barely can.
Next to TouchBar Developers, we’ll soon have Pencil Consultants.
But on the positive side, Apple did improve on those that brought a beta device on the market...and once again saved the environment as that one can now be used as a selfie stick.

Wait.. Thinking about it.. I use a rubber sleeve on my Apple Pencil, partly to stop it rolling away, partly because I have a habit of dropping stuff on my concrete studio floor.

You really can't have a rubber sleeve on the new ones can you? Someone would have to come up with a weird thing that clips on but doesn't cover the flat side. Hmm.

People are really missing the point when complaining about the price. The standard iPad still exists, supports Apple Pencil and works beautifully. If you were just going to be taking notes and doing occasional things that's still available.

The iPad Pro is competing with the likes of Wacom, and in that context the value is incredible. Apple have forced Wacom to up their game massively too, this sort of competition is great.

Completely agree with this. I plan to completely replace my Wacom tablet with iPad Pro once Photoshop for iPad is released. If that was the only thing the iPad did, it would be worth it just to be untethered from my desk.

"easier to hold for longer periods of time"

Citation needed, haha. I use (polychromos) round barrelled pencils constantly and I've never felt its more comfortable using a pencil with flat sides.. This sort of thing is really subjective. The pencil 1 isn't heavy.

Remember fountain pens, with round barrels, used for writing over long periods with a proper holding position not seen anymore. The nibs would wear down to a custom angle that makes it difficult for anyone else to use it comfortably.

The muscles in the hand cramp in a short period with ball-point pens and #2 pencils because they need more pressure to write with, leading to the bizarre grip that most people all over the world use. Like some nerve deficit grip.

Meh, I guess don’t see the advantages for using an apple pen for hand writing when you can dictate your words much faster. Nor for a lot of people IMO.

I’ll never need an Apple pen like the Note 9 stylus, personally. Though I thought of buying the note 9 vs my X, the stylus wasn’t the reason.

So you are going to speak while someone else is speaking (presumably the reason for taking the notes in the first place), or bother everyone around you?
If you only take notes in a quiet room by yourself, you're not really in the target audience for it as a note-taking solution.

Asked and answered!

I have never tried caviar. I will not be commenting on caviar in this thread.

The Apple Pencil needs an eraser on the other end. Wacom and Microsoft have this figured out.

I’d much rather double tap the side of the Pencil to switch to an eraser and back, than have to flip the entire tool around and back to continue. Having an eraser the same size as the tip of the pencil is also a plus. I’d say Apple did exactly the right thing here.

I suppose I am too used to the eraser being on the end of the stylus. I much prefer Microsoft or Wacom pens because of this.

Incidentally, Microsoft and Wacom styli also have buttons so you can assign one of the buttons to an eraser if you want - so you could do either. Tap a button to bring up an eraser on the stylus tip, or flip it over and use the eraser head.

Interesting some people really want an eraser. I'd never use it - I never use it on my Wacoms. Artist pencils don't have erasers on the back. (some mechanical pencils do I guess) Its much quicker not to spin the pencil around.. :/ Given the quality of the main tip, and the fact that tilt/pressure etc work on it when you've selected an eraser brush - what do people think the eraser on the other end would be like? Another high quality tip or like a dumb-stylus? In which case - much less accurate. I wouldn't want the Pencil to get more expensive to accommodate something unnecessary?

In 10 years of working on a Cintiq daily, I think I used the eraser end of my wacom pen twice, just to try it. It’s just so much less efficient and accurate as you said. For switching to eraser or any tool, keyboard shortcuts are most ideal, then side buttons/taps on the pen, then easily accessible onscreen toggles—spinning around the pen itself is dead last.

OMG... more than 170 comments for a pencil! I'm surprised how some of you guys/girls still think in problems!
Or want it different "better"... like magnets all around.

Its cheeper than the Wacom and works just as well I keep hearing and indeed have found myself. iPads Photoshop is really the missing piece since is so frequent that designs start on Pro Create then get transferred to desktop to be finished on Photoshop.
Why aren’t you using Affinity Photo? It’s far surpasses Photoshop on the iPad and costs much less.

This is a great point. Who in their right mind carries around a $1,000+ device without a protective case?

My question to all Photoshop users: Why are you still using the predatory Adobe app and not Affinity Photo...?
