Btw, Woz is quite bullish on Watch and thinks it will sell very well.

I've never been huge on the Apple Watch, it has always seemed like Apple is just trying to enter a market because others are doing so. During their demos they touted things like sending emoticons and basic things like a strap to keep the band flush to the wrist.

Apple doesn't seem to understand this product themselves, the fact that it is described internally as a black hole is not a good sign.

I think this will be apples first major product to be a flop in a long time.
I doubt it. Was the first iPhone major flop to you? Even tho it was lacking 3G and many functions, it set the standard for the smartphone world. Now it's Apple Watch turn for smart watch world.
Apple is trying to enter the market? You makes me laugh. The smartwatch was created due to iWatch rumor 3-4 years ago and others reacted to that rumor by introducing crappy smartwatch, the same way they introduced dumb smartphones before the iPhone.

What exactly from this story were you expecting to be included the Watch being launched this spring?

I wasn't expecting anything specific. Simply put, what is confirmed to be included isn't enough to make me drop hundreds of dollars on it. I didn't mean to imply anything else with my statements.

Nice to see a reminder of how everyone claiming the iWatch would measure glucose levels through the skin was wrong. This is basically an overpriced toy. Measuring glucose levels without using blood is something that will be developed by the scientists, not by the designers or toy makers.

"Measuring glucose levels without using blood is something that will be developed by the scientists"....already is in the works. There is a 2012 prototype chip that relays info to a smartphone.

Look up the team of people behind the :apple:watch sometime, you may be surprised.

And do know how many scientists were hired by apple? Many of my friends working in biotech/ medical devices fields were currently working at Apple. Good luck of getting your hand on one of them at the release. I rather spend $50 -$100 more on Apple Watch than those Android junky watches.

Pretty clear to see Apple has big ambitions here. But I'm glad they dropped stuff that wasn't up to snuff rather than just adding sensors for the sake of it whether they were very accurate or not.

Too bad they didn't think that way with the iPad Air and the Safari crashing. Or the problems holding onto a wifi connection when there are several sources in the area.

Utter nonsense.

I'm intrigued by the "health and behavioral advice --> requires FDA approval" tidbit and am wondering where they draw the line. The keynote demo and other videos clearly show the watch prompting people to get up and move. Thag new Lift dongle thing that attaches to your collar does the same.

I am unsure what is terribly ambitious, outside of perhaps the aesthetic aspect, and the fact that they are essentially selling versions of this thing that can be classified as jewelry. Outside of being able to text your heartbeat and a wacky face, I am unsure that this thing does anything that others haven't done for years. I will reserve my final judgement until I see the product, but it also doesn't seem like it does any of those things better. From my vantage point this is very much a "me too" product. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, mind you, I just don't view it as terribly ambitious. Not yet, anyway.

If the "black hole" sells a few tens of millions gold plated and rose gold plated watches, then I suppose it will be covered. In the mean time they wrote off a large R&D expense.

I don't even expect tens of millions of rose gold devices to be produced, do you? I would expect tens of thousands, if that.

I'm a bit skeptical that this product morphed from a fitness tracker deluxe into a general purpose device. Plus most of the fitness/medical related hires appear to have started in 2013. Way to early for that stuff to be ready for gen 1 device.

I was hoping all the rumors would be just a subset of all of the wonders that the :apple:Watch would have, including:

a holographic display, like they had in Star Wars,
a medicine doser that would rip apart the molecules of the air and reassemble the quarks into the medicine I needed, at the point I needed them without the benefit of a doctor,
have a battery life of 10 years,
help me pick up chicks, and then convince my wife that this is OK, because I have an :apple:Watch,
go to the bathroom for me,
buy me drinks (not at the same time as above...)
drive my car,
help me move grand pianos up 6 flights of stairs,
Fix me breakfast,
Tuck me in,
and, when I need it, tell me the time

Skin conductivity? Talking about bioimpendance? Sounds like they wanted to do what Jawbone is doing with the UP3, but realized maybe it was a bit early for that INCREDIBLE technology, so they decided to wait till they make it perfectly functional... While Jawbone clearly didn't wait and, although I hope they release the UP3 asap, it looks like it keeps on being postponed!

I'm not talking about gen 1. I'm talking about all the stuff it's clear they're working on. Using your logic the iPhone wasn't ambutious either because gen 1 didn't have 3G, App Store, 3rd party native apps, copy/paste, required iTunes to do almost anything, etc.

I thought the same thing!

This story just re-affirm my belief that Apple only sells a product that they know 110% works out of the box - for everyone.

Apple in fact could keep the sensors. Why not? More sells, right? But they don't. Regardless the impact of the sensors to the watch battery life, aesthetic design, etc., Apple must be sure the watch benefits not only for certain person. Putting something because X wanted it, but Y couldn't use it, or not working very well for Z, will never happened at Apple, but many competitors will do it, just because.

There are tons of experiments behind the scenes. Tons of redesigns and reinvents. People just don't see it, and yet they complain. Also, Apple has been working on Watch for 4 years, so they don't exactly enter the market to follow.

If it were a dick tracy watch, that would offer functionality I have always wanted. Or a fitness device, valuable functionality I can use. Or, being Apple capable of more than anyone, both in one would be great.

But instead, it is neither. It is essentially a bluetooth headset phone accessory, but without the usefulness of the headset, and with emoticons and heartbeats. If I were a spoiled rich 13 year old girl, which seems to increasingly be Apple's target audience, I'd probably be thrilled and tell all my friends they have to get their parents to rush out and get them one so we can all send heartbeats back and forth and draw smileys between bff's ok like omg

When you think about what a smart watch could be, this seems like a placeholder, in lieu of an actual smart watch product.

so what will happened to the nike fuel band? Will it make a comeback since the watch has failed in the health department?

There was a story last year from multiple sources that Nike had laid off the hardware team. No new Nike
Band.

Of course gen 2 will be better, but that won't stop me from getting and enjoying the first gen Apple watch. :D
