A funny thing happened when my CoreDuo 17" iMac couldn't upgrade to Lion . . it kept working, kept going out to the web, kept sharing files with the other computers in the house, shared it's printer . . . but darn, I couldn't get the App Store . . . or Launch Control . . . and I didn't have to upgrade my version of MS Office . . . in other words, not a big deal.

Go on and keep using your not so new iPads, iPhones, Touch and when it stops being useful for you, consider your alternatives and make your next choice in the marketplace.

My 15" MBP Core Duo bought in April 2006 went from Tiger through Leopard and on to Snow Leopard and is still running. It did get the App Store but can't run Lion. Given that the machine was five years old once Lion dropped I wasn't that surprised because five years of solid use and support was good for the machine. Besides which, Apple is still updating Snow Leopard and to a degree Leopard for those stuck on PPC machines. I expect the realistic lifespan of the machine is going to be closer to 9 years once updates for Snow Leopard stop. I am still running a G4 iBook bought in October 2003 and it is still getting updates and the hardware is still fine. I use it as an iTunes server for my Apple TVs.

Now, the iPad I bought in Sept 2010 and here we are with it not even two years old (they stopped selling the iPad 1 in March 2011 so there are plenty of people who's iPad 1 is only just over a year old) and we're facing being cut-off for not just the new version of iOS but also security fixes. That is unacceptable. I've written as such to Apple and I expect many others to do the same. Sure, the iPad 1 isn't a powerhouse like the new iPad but it still functions. Speed with iOS 5 is fine as long as you don't fill the storage up completely - I try to keep a couple of gigs free and find it switches apps smoothly if I do but if I fill it up so there is only 400MB left say it gets really laggy. Anyway, I would like the new mapping and the updates to Safari and feel that the iPad 1 is perfectly able to cope and they're just trying to treat it like a phone which it isn't. I expect to get somewhere between phone and computer levels of support so a phone that gets support dropped after two years isn't a surprise and a computer that gets support dropped after six is also pretty good so lets split the difference and get at least one more update for the iPad 1. I'll feel like the cost was justified but as it stands I'm not going to buy a new iPad and will keep running my original until it becomes completely useless and only then will I upgrade. Same with my iPhone 4.

Compared to newer hardware the iPad 1 is a dog. I couldn't believe the speed difference, and it was extremely noticeable. While it is insane why they aren't updating it I can see why, and shipping the iPad 1 with 256mb of RAM was just stupid, and is probably the biggest factor, the OS assests probably couldn't fit, and it was a crashy piece of crap on ios 5.

You are right

Hi I am a old mac user and this gimmicks don't affect me at all.
IOS 6 is not the end of the world the iPad1 still great machine retina o no retina this is only marketing I got mine last week first one and I have money to get the best newer one but "FOR WHAT".
Apple is good for Hardware and the rest is up to us be creative go and find solution don't go with the crow (retina) be your own mac user.
It is always shortcut all you have to do is ask you only friend Google.
This is your chance to Jailbreak, this mus be the great thing ever happen to you now you will be a geek.

I simply don't get the level of outrage in your post. The device is self-limiting; it has a processor/RAM combination that is capable of only so much. On the plus side, it will continue to do all of that well into the future.

I don't see where Apple has an ongoing responsibility to provide you with the latest functionality in every device they've sold in the past.

I purchased an original iPad in May of 2010. When the iPad 2 came out I looked at it and it was a bit faster but not enough to justify ditching the original. I expected the new iPad to have a quad core CPU and some other performance enhancements, which it did not.

The performance of the current offering is not breathtakingly faster than the original and doesn't justify an upgrade.

I am hoping for a quad core iPad in 2013. If Apple wants consumers to upgrade, then they have to offer something that is worth upgrading to.

I purchased an original iPad when the iPad2's came out, got a NIB 32Gb 3G model for $470 with no additional cost (tax or shipping).

When the "new" iPad's came out, I had decided on a 32Gb 3G iPad2 for $619 NIB but instead I lucked out on an open box "new" iPad 64Gb 4G for $737 since they base PX takes 10% off anything that's open box = for $119 more, I got double the internal storage, double the RAM, better graphics GPU, better camera's and better display than the iPad2.

Yes, it does get warm on the back and yes it seems to take longer to charge due to the larger battery but the more powerful these devices become, the worse the battery life will be and the hotter they will run!

*** I'm happy with the new iPad coming from my original iPad (that I gifted to a family member)...

I use to think my iPad 1 was rather speedy at the basics, but my god the iPad 2 is in a different league (way faster)

From the tests i've seen & read about the "New iPad" it is no faster than the iPad 2 simply because the 3rd gen needs to have the extra ram and quad graphics just to drive its retina display and apparently in terms of actual user performance NOT BENCHMARK (its about on pare with an iPad 2).

Sure the iPad 2's cameras aint that great, but its only a tablet at the end of the day, I have a Nikon DSLR & 4S for pictures.

If most are annoyed (like I was) that you cant run iOS 6 sell the iPad 1, I'm glad I did to be honest, I should have just waited for the second in the first place.

Still have the iPad 1 (32GB) will just sit chilling in my Apple collection :L

I think when Apple releases iOS 6, i'm not going to update my iPad 2. It works fine as it is. I don't want to turn my speedy device into a chug-a-lug tablet. :p

Hi Guys,

When I heard about this myself I decided to upgrade as well. I had a 32GB + 3G iPad 1 and decided to go for the 'new' iPad 32GB wi-fi as I never need the 3G.

So far yes its alot faster than the iPad 1 and a little faster from the iPad 2. You can tell the screen is alot better too, the main selling point.

I plan to use my iPad 1 3G when travelling and keep my 'new' iPad at home for the time being.

If your iPad is fine for what you do then I say keep it, If you find it crashing like I did and dont want to be left out from future updates then its time to put your money into Apple's bank again :D

I'm running iOS 6 on my iPad 2 no issues whatsoever. Its the same speed as iOS 5 has been, After all it does have identical specs to an iPhone 4S. The first gen iPad only had 256mb ram. The iPhone 4 had double that. The 2 also has dual core so it's not gonna be as slow as other idevices from the past when updating to a new OS release.

I have an iPad1 and to be totally honest, I don't care about iOS6 as, yet again it's just the same as before with a few tweaks.

If there was REALLY something different about iOS6 then I'd be like, OMG I can't miss out on the awesome new product, the new front end, the way all the apps display in the new way etc etc etc......

But, yet again, since the dawn of the iPad it's just the same old thing with some tweaks.

The only things that really made differences on any real scale were the Folders, the Multi-touch Gestures.

I wonder if we are going to be stuck with this tired old grid of static icons against a static background for the next decade, or is Apple at some stage will actually offer something new?

I'm actually interested in Metro on the "Surface" with it different sized live tiles so I can see things happening and what to look at, at a glance. Something NEW :)
