Oh Dear Lord Please Stop. Flatness was boring on my Amiga in 1985. When I decided to take the risk and jump on the Apple Train I didn't think I'd get Flattened.

Can you just do it once on the top folder (say documents or whatever is at the top of your folder hierarchy) and it applies all the way through the tree below it?

You'd think so, but you can't! Every single folder has its own view settings and is totally independent, which is quite silly. I think Windows does a better job at preserving view options, though Windows has always had this bug where it simply can't remember your "arrange by" choice (it randomly reverts to some other view whenever it feels like it). I guess this is something no company on Earth has figured out how to do yet!

I think some of you thinking this looks like Winblows need to get your head checked. It's looks nothing like Windows and still very much looks like OS X.

If you guys don't think OS X is going to look something like this you're in denial, but I'm sure when Apple does it you'll like it just fine.

Im so over the "Flat" craze..

I was over it on day one of iOS 7's first announcement. iOS 7 is a pile of garbage GUI BS. I really don't want OS X going the same way. I've been running from Windows, and I don't want Macs to turn into Windows computers with all the ugly and inhumane GUI nonsense and wasted CPU/RAM.

Every 'flat' OSX design concept I've seen has been really nice. Apple could be so subtle with it and still keep everything distinctly OSX. With simple straight lines and block colours, Mac OSX could become something really up to date and modern whilst still remaining iconic and instantly recognisable as OSX.

I'm sorry but I HATE the whole so-called "modern" stuff. It's just another trend.

You can't beat photorealistic, because we live in a photorealistic world. Apple became just another me-too design house when they decided to throw skeuomorphism and photorealism out the window.

But I agree that taste is subjective, and if you like it, you like it. :D

Looks like Mavericks will become a last stop for me, if OSX resembles ANYTHING like this.

I better start getting more familiar with Linux, just in case. ;)

People should realize that this 'flat design' is a trend, not an evolution.... and trends are bad to follow for operating systems...

Actually, 'flat design' has been around since pretty much the beginning of graphic design and consequently, UI design. It was only in the 90s with the overall 3D craze, that we began to see an increase in the reflex-, emboss- and bevel-effects that constitute design aesthetics we have since become used to. Flat design is not a trend but a design choice – and a bold one a that, which I commend Apple for making :)

I like it. I'm sick of glossy stuff. As a matter of fact, I switched my Windows 7 machine at work to the flat Windows 2000 look because I'm tired of being distracted.

I hope brushed metal will finally be replaced!

I'm hoping for something subtle and more elegant.. Classic Mac OS had really nice, simple windows with small touches of color and texture. It would be great to go back in that direction.

In Vectors We Trust

I still don't see why Apple is not taking advantage of vectors. It just makes sense to have the base UI in vectors in this day and age due to the different screen sizes and ratios...

skeeeeeeeuuuuuooomorphism....

I'm actually not opposed to bringing iOS Mac OS closer together in look and feel, but this is a god awful mockup. It reminds of changing themes with ShapeShifter back in the day.

Well, it's been OSX for about 13 years now. Why are they stuck on that version? I've NEVER heard of a single version with only point releases for 13 years. Do they ever plan to move forward? I assumed this was finally the year. I still doubt they would go 10.10...that's just dumb. In numerical terms 10.10 = 10.1

Windows has been at the same major version for 7 years.

Windows Vista - January 2007 - NT 6.0
Windows 7 - October 2009 - NT 6.1
Windows 8 - October 2012 - NT 6.2
Windows 8.1 - October 2013 - NT 6.3

No no no no no no

Apple continues to disappoint me. If they release an OS version like that, I will never buy it. Ever.

....disappointed....

If they continue in this "simple and flat" direction, then I predict that Mac OSXII will look like this about 12 years from now:

Oooooo. I like it! It's bold! It's a new direction! It's free from distraction! It's a design choice! I commend Apple for taking such a bold new direction! omg lol

Hey guys!

I'm a self proclaimed "graphics designer" too! Just look at this awesome mockup I made of Mac OS X 11! It's so flat, cause flat is hip and cool! I've also taken the liberty of ignoring every single HIG guideline Apple has ever published, and made sure that my UI is impossible to differentiate on a white background! I R SO LEET! FEATURE ME ON THE FRONT PAGE PLZ KTHX!

Why are you such a condescending tool?

All this guy did was make a mockup of how he thought it would look and macrumors picked it up. What exactly did he do wrong?

Flat Fail

"Design" is what Apple has always boasted about and the very concreteness of Skeuomorphic design has made Apple what it is today. Take the Keyboard for example on iOS Devices (6.x). It was so beautiful and solid that it gave me at least some sense of typing on an actual physical keyboard and now I am typing on a tissue paper.

iOS 7.0's Flatter Design was a fail because in 7.1, the Icons have been given a radial shade/fill whatever that is, slightly different than iOS 7.0. I say Why if 7.0's UI was fine?

Now with Tim Cook or (TC, Apple) in charge, "Haunted Empire" has nailed it. Cook would not have responded this quick but it is something that falls under "Truth is Bitter".

Cook seems to oust Steve Jobs from everything that Apple is about by introducing his own worthless ideas starting from UI and eventually the fall of Apple (from the Tech Tree).

I was a fan of Apple under Steve Jobs but this transformation to the flatter design is now really getting on the nerves.

Apparently a lot of young-un's here weren't around for the original "Mac OS".

I was.

It was as "flat" as it gets.

It took decades to develop a fuller, "deeper" look to the OS.

Why go back ??

Because that is over exaggerated hyperbole. The new flatter UI's look absolutely nothing like 30 year old ones.

----------

The next version of OS X will be inspired by iOS 7 in some capacity, but in order to understand where 10.10 is headed, we shouldn't forget the ways in which iOS 7 itself differed from 6.

The focus has been on multiple planes of activity, where each app takes feels like a part of the system, yet true to its own cause. Even if you turn on the 'Reduce Motion' switch in Accessibility, the U.I still creates this story as each plane dissolves into one-another when you switch between them, almost as if they've been edited like a film. It's a tiny detail, but it really does "just work" and has a good calming influence on the content.

This design was integral to iOS because of the combination with the hardware; full-screen apps that are controlled with gestures. OS X, whilst still essentially a computer of sorts, is a completely different beast all together. Apple I'm sure are well aware of this, and with the number of different inputs (and outputs) available, they're not going to begin adding iOS-style effects just for the sake of continuity. Why would Apple add translucency to windows when it's only seen on Notification Centre/Control Centre? Why would they make the windows all white when many people deal with multiple levels of content all on a single screen at the same time? 'Mock-ups' like these are just the work of people who spend too much time in Photoshop, imagining what looks different.

The way I see it is that because productivity is such an important feature of Mac's, they're going to keep a lot of icons and labels in pretty much the same order, so that long-time users can still recognise these cues off the bat. The professional market is important to them, and if they've invested in a whole new Mac Pro, then they're absolutely going to want to make sure that the operating system for it equals the hardware. Otherwise, what's the point?

Regardless, some changes that I think will definitely be made.

  • The dock absolutely has to go back to a 'Tiger' style. That what the cleanest one yet; the current one is a relic of the pre-iOS 7 design language.
  • Window panes will be a lighter shade of grey, but certainly not white. That's just counter productive.
  • Icons will retain the same proportions/shape, but updated with less colours and shading.
  • iOS-style Notification Centre, but still on the side of the screen.
  • AirDrop integration with iOS devices. The fact they chose to use the same name for both OS's suggests they may have had ideas.
  • Finally, I can see something drastic happening with Finder. Same functionality, but could integrate with Apple's own apps a bit more.

I agree about the dock. The Tiger dock looks sooooo much better, I hate the 3d dock. And it's a shame there's no way to make the mavericks sidedock on the bottom.

First there was the flat and grey obsession after Snow Leopard, then the removal of useful functionality like smart folders in the sidebar, if the OS starts turning more form-before-function like most of their thin for the sake of it hardware, I'm going to be sticking with a system that dual boots Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion forever because Mavericks is a trainwreck for me and anything even worse is just going to bug me as much as Windows does.

How can it be called 10.10???? 10.10 is the same number as 10.1!!!!

It has to be OS11 already!!

Are you familiar with IP addresses and the way they're written? Same deal. It's just a few base ten integers separated by periods - it's not a base ten float. The last version of 10.4 that was released was 10.4.11
