the current UI is classy, non-cool, non-trendy, only subtly changed since 10.5, non-flat and a pleasure to look at and to use.

Exactly. Just because something is "old" (and I think Aqua was last changed in Lion, about 3 years ago...), doesn't mean it looks "dated" and needs to go. I'd rather Apple continue to make subtle changes in the right direction than try to suddenly overhaul the GUI à la iOs 7 (which I'm not sure would even be possible on OS X) .

Does this look dated?

Im so over the "Flat" craze..

I actually like it, it is inline with iOS 7, I am sure they have metrics on how people like it and how many people have switched over. To quote Bob Dylan:

"It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'"

I've seen this video and laughed at it as a kid. As an adult, all of the features demonstrated in Vista we're very obvious. Even back in the Vista days XP was old, which lead to a lot of modern features all at once that OS X already had due to more rapid updates. I'm willing to admit though seeing how Apple did it first gave them an advantage in seeing how it could be done, but OS X and Windows are too different to say anything's copied.

The only thing I don't like the first screen shot is the window looks "inactive" when it's supposed to active. I think the folders look fine, just bring back the colors on the side bar. And the icons on the dock are all blue...unless that's just the way those particular apps' colors are supposed to be.

They are probably never going to have OS 11. Why? Because OS X is a brand now.

Why go to 11 just for hell of it? The version number is irrelevant.

Also, as already stated multiple times, software versioning doesn't work mathematically. 10.10 is not the same is 10.1.

So was Mac OS 9. If/when they go to OS 11, they'll just apply their Apple marketing "magic" and it'll do great.

Isn't this windows 7? oh wait no, the x is on the left side.

This isn't as ugly as iOS7 but still pretty damn ugly.

People need to get over their hate of skumorphism, you can't just replace elements with nothing in the name of knowing tech.

Looks nothing like Windows 7.

EDIT: They said the title bars are supposed be translucent, which would indeed make it like Windows 7...but I don't see any translucency in the mock ups...?

And people need to get over their hate of flat design. If done right, it works.

Looks like Windows 7. Don't look like Windows 7, please.

See answer above.

After my heart rate settled down, it started to grow on me, already. Change is a bitch, but bitches can be good, too.

Dramatic much?

Most of this mockup just looks washed out to me.
My biggest issue is somehow still that not all of my contacts have pictures. The simplified theme works for lots of things, but I get annoyed by those blank email, imessages, etc pictures, and they're only becoming more centralized.

It feels like the kind of simple OS they put on those fake laptops as toys for children. I hope it looks nothing like that because otherwise I'll regress back to my childhood every time I turn my machine on! Goo-Goo-Gah-Gah

FLAT DESIGN NEEDS TO DIE A HORRIBLE DEATH!!!

Hurts my eyes! Too much color, wayyy too bright, the icons are wayyy too thin and easily lost!

Steve and Scott were right with skeuomorphism (minus the leather windows, Game Center and ical)

I hope Jony snaps out of the whole flat & bright fad.

Amen.

How did I stumble on the WindowsRumors?

In iOS 7, Apple redesigned the user interface from top to bottom, removing most "skeuomorphic" elements and giving the OS a cleaner and lighter look and feel. Back in January, it was reported that OS X 10.10 -- code named Syrah -- would also see a flatter redesign, but that it would not see as extensive a reworking as iOS did.

Designer Danny Giebe has posted a series of concept images on Dribbble, showing what an iOS 7-inspired redesign of OS X could look like:

It is not known what Apple will call the next version of its OS X operating system, but may show off the new OS -- and its new California-inspired name -- at WWDC in June of this year. Over the past several years, Apple has tended to release its new Mac operating system in mid-Fall.

It's inevitable that Apple have decided to merge OSX and IOS with further integration, making things appear more obvious to the everyday user. I'm not against the idea, and as long as they leave us low level tools terminal etc. then I guess it makes sense...what you see on your phone and iPad is broadly the same as what you see on your Mac. The times, as a man said a ways back, are changing.

So was Mac OS 9. If/when they go to OS 11, they'll just apply their Apple marketing "magic" and it'll do great.
OS 9 was never a brand, it was a version number. OS X, originally, was likely meant to be the same. However they stuck with it for over 10 years and show no intention of dropping it. Maybe because it looks cool, maybe because they don't want to drop the relation to Unix or NeXt. Who knows? But Apple's treatment of OS X is on an entirely different level as before. OS 9 was Mac OS 9. Generic. Apple has dropped the Mac part altogether and simply called the operating system OS X. It's a brand, and one that is severable from Mac, where Mac OS 9 was glued to it.

The second pic reminds me of windows a lot. I don't mind if Apple goes 'flat' with their next OS but hopefully it doesn't resemble this mockup...

when I first read this post the blue outline on the outside of the finder window reminded me of Windows 8.x lol I was thinking, what? up is down, down is up lol, but then after reviewing the concept drawings it hasn't lost it's OSX flavor. It's rather nice.

I like apps like knocktounlock and it would be awesome if this was part of the OS. :)

Strip down the images. Humans do not recognize images very well. They are confusing. Especially I don't want to look a the faces of my email contacts.

What the HELL am I reading here?

Throw out your cameras, switch off your televisions! Pluck out your eyes! Humans cannot deal with images; they addle our tiny little minds.

The Queen needs to strip Ive of his premature knighthood. His crimes against Apple's HIG is spreading madness amongst Macrumors posters.
