There is for me? I'm in the UK, but I used your link.

Of course there is, you simply have to wait a second...

I guess we were wrong to think it might be quicker with digital distribution only and the 'enable switch' from the other thread.... Probably 29th then, based on the postings of the previous OS Xs *sigh*. They really should just say.

I wouldn't be surprised if they sent around a second GM candidate first; there are a bunch of little bugs and it still lacks that "snappy new OS" performance for me.

I am running the GM build on 3 computers. Works great for me. I installed right over my Snow Leopard install, and the performance is faster doing it this way than it is installing Lion as new. Kind of weird. I've had no issues with the Lion GM build. I think it's definitely ready for release, but it probably won't be released until end of next week.

You download the Installer Application directly to your local drive and run it off your drive, it reboots and installs.

I am hoping the installer is more complicated than that for there are a few scenarios which were all supported by a lowly physical media (DVD/CD):

Don't want to dig up another topic but somehow the App Store delivery method need to support:

- Install to multiple Macs that you own (hopefully this does not equal to downloading multiple times - imagine bandwidth required for 4gb x 4 macs)
- Install fresh (was some talk about OS installer residing in a separate partition. But again, the scenario of HDD need to be replaced or if HDD becomes corrupt and need to be reformatted etc.
- Business installs, volume license

I am waiting in eager anticipation to see if Apple will go down the route of FCP X and decide that certain usage scenarios are of no importance and leave them out.
(i.e. new installer does not have some features as the old physical method).

Or the easy way is to download to dmg and auto burn to disc / copy to USB media.

Actually, I remember some OS X release that was on the new machines and not available to the public for a few hours. It was mayhem in the stores.

I remember when Apple had the Jaguar developer previews installed on computers in the Apple Stores for people to play around with for a few months before it came out.

Times have definitely changed.

AppleWorks will not run on Lion.

When you run a law office and you have over 10,000 files in AppleWorks, you use it everyday for work, and then Lion comes out and DOES NOT support ANY PowerPC apps at ALL....then you are up a creek without a paddle. You just don't upgrade to Lion.

This is the situation my Dad is in right now with his old White Core 2 Duo iMac, running Snow Leopard and AppleWorks, which he has been running his law practice on since the old G3 iMac.

I've never heard of a business using AppleWorks. Seriously? AppleWork's was discontinued a LONG time ago.

what are you talking about, I'm here all right, now Apple GIVE ME ZE LION

What's he saying, my friend, is that you ... or a lot of people who are desperately waiting for Lion (like you), will download it right away, use it for a day or two and then post a thread on Macrumors about how many things are wrong with it - or things you don't like about it.

It will be an installer app, but for experts (people who need to burn a disc/thumb drive) there is a hidden DMG file inside the contents which can found using "Show Contents" in Finder. I have no doubt that within 24 hours someone will make an app that will easily let you burn/copy this DMG without even knowing where it is so even noobs can do it.

As Larry Jordan likes to say, "nobody's putting a gun to your head and forcing you to upgrade"... If you want to keep on using AppleWorks, and it works on your current setup, then leave your current setup alone!

I know, crazy, right? :p

It's forced obsolescence to encourage people to upgrade.

You could have just posted a screenshot of that window, rather than your entire desktop.

Scheduled maintenance of the Apple Support Communities at 11PM (PDT) today. Sounds good :).

I think you're reading way too much into what is probably just regular scheduled maintenance. They could be upgrading the software or database that supports their forums to fix bugs.

Of course, they could be adding extra forums for Lion, but it could well be coincidence.

much ado about nothing

I don't really see the great benefits of migrating to OSX Lion are?. Currently i'm a Snow Leopard user and have had the opportunity of testing the OSX Lion GM. Unlike like previous version of OSX it lacks the 'under the bonnet' improvements that would convince me of switching to it.

In fact all the improvements are Ui focused and nothing else. By simply adopting concepts they are already have implemented on there iOS mobile devices Apple haven't developed a new branch of OSX, rather simply given it makeover. Gizmodo are already calling it Apple's 'Vista'.

Point to note that Lion is more demanding on your hardware than Snow Leopard, I tested it on a Macbook Pro, Core 2 Duo 2.4, with Nvidia 320M, 4Gb Ram. While it is fair to say it was running perfect, it would be obvious to most users that I was not as fast as Snow Leopard. The heavy emphasis on Ui and excessive use of onscreen animations and transition effects adopted from iOS platform making OSX look gimicky.

Connecting to a particular Windows server from Lion GM is actually killing the server's network connection for 10 minutes. There's something seriously wrong with the new SMB engine...

And connecting to Active Directory has gone back a step since Snow Leopard, you can only bind to the generic "Computers" group of AD; attempting to join any other OU will fail (I think that was previously fixed in Leopard).

(however, nice that it has some DFS capability, though it doesn't seem to be able to connect to hidden DFS shares).

In short, Lion is not really ready for the enterprise sector.

(not to mention that Lion is not really suitable for a teaching environment where you can't use wireless mouse/trackpad for fear of theft)

With all due respect what enterprise environment voluntarily uses V1 of ANY software release? There will always always always be bugs in any new software product, that's pretty much inevitable with the sheer complexity not just of the software itself but the environment it operates in / connects to. By all means grab a copy or two for a test environment but a full blown rollout really needs to wait at least a few weeks for the initial bug reports to come in (and ideally until the first full blown patch at the earliest).

Lion date.

They will wait until after July 23rd so it falls into the lion sign, before that would make it cancer.

Why should I care about Lion? Seriously. This is the first OS that Apple is releasing that just doesn't seem to be worth the hype. It's going to be just like iOS and rely heavily on the app store. Not sure I like the direction Apple is taking their Mac OS. Enlighten me!
