Holy potatoes I can't wait for this. I'd easily pay the $20 we paid for Mountain Lion, but of course anything less would be more than welcomed.

Really hoping to see battery life improved on my 2011 13in MBA. I know software can only do so much to help 345+ battery cycles (83% life), but they had some impressive claims during WWDC.

But then again, I might bite on a Haswell 13in rMBP :p

Now we get to find out if it's a paid update or free. Mountain Lion was $20 and Lion before it was $30.

I've often wondered what software developers think of big companies giving away software for free. How do you get people to pay for good software?

So why are people here reformatting there drive before installing ?
Will it run better as a clean I stall over updating on top of of your old OS

Interesting new introduction to the iPhoto update. I noticed a few changes with handling photo streams, otherwise I have the sense once everything is released with new hardware, iCloud services will broaden out (such as bringing back Keychain syncing and hopefully full file sharing).

It looks exactly the same as Mountain Lion. There are no changes to the interface that anyone would ever notice if you weren't looking for them.

Almost all the changes are "under the covers".

Well the faux leather was taken out of calendar. ;)

Some developers (me) put a lot in debugging our app's, third party installs, debuting the OS, running it through the wringer - having a laundry day install may make a difference or could be a placebo effect. Personally, I do it to clean out app's I don't use, aren't updated yet, get rid of old junk, and reinstall app's individually. Throw my personal doc's back and done. Takes 1-2 hours, but hey, it's like Christmas ;).

Please tell me Game Center is done

I'm really hoping this is a big October for Apple:

iPad/Mini with retina
MbP update (non retina option still available)
Mac Pro release

It's been a quiet year for the richest company. Let's get this tide rolling

anyone have directions on how to turn the mavericks installer into a usb install drive? I want to do a clean install and that seems to be the best way.

it looks like apple has changed the installer files so that previous methods no longer work.

Not seeing this show up in the App Store (though the iPhoto update came in fine)....I've quit/reopened the application and restarted but nothing yet.

First......

kudos to 9to5 Mac and the AppleSeed developers for hinting this release as a viable GM. I am also glad to know Apple is on route to meet their schedule for a fall release. And hoping for a not half-baked OS update.

:):apple:

They're not giving it away for free though. Apple's software developers are simply paid out of the profit margins of the devices/accessories they sell, the cuts from app purchases via the App Store, and the cuts from TV/music/movie purchases via iTunes. And I'm sure they're all paid giant silicon valley salaries, at that. It's just a marketing strategy, if anything.

EDIT: To address your actual inquiry - good question! I suppose it just comes down to features and market desire.

If you are registered apple developer, go into the member center and click on the redeem button to have it added to your app store purchased items.

If you aren't a developer, it is not in the store yet.

Make a copy of the installer from your Applications folder after it downloads but before you install (it disappears afterwards).

Open the installer package contents by right-clicking and selecting "Show Package Contents"

Drill into Contents -> SharedSupport -> InstallESD.dmg

Unless it has been modified, the InstallESD.dmg file is the crux of the OS install.

In "Disk Utility", mount the dmg and a USB drive.

Using the "Restore" option, make sure the InstallESD mount is in "Source" and the USB drive is the Destination.

Restore, it will wipe and create a bootable USB drive.

Reboot your Mac holding the "alt/option" key - I use a wired keyboard as bluetooth connectivity during boot can be dodgy

Select the USB install volume

Open "Disk Utility" if you want to erase your HDD first (make sure everything is backed up)

Exit "Disk Utility", install, done.

Hope that helps. :)

Update: It has been changed a bit. When you mount the InstallESD dmg, inside the "Packages" folder will be numerous install packages. I believe the "OSInstall.pkg" file is the important installer but I am able to use the above instructions without drilling into the Packages folder to restore/create a bootable USB. What's the verdict?

I just tried Lion DiskMaker 3 Beta but that failed. There are a couple of methods in this thread, just go to the bottom as you'll need to change one line. I'm actually in the middle of using the OP's from that thread right now. Seems to be working fine so far, in the middle of "Copying installer files to disk...." part of it. It takes a little while.

How to download the GM if I had downloaded a DP previously? I'm getting The Code has Already Been Redeemed error in App Store.

Keep opening and closing the MAS, had the same issue, make sure to check in purchases as it will show it's downloading as a new app or update. It's a bit confusing and servers are overloaded it seems.

That no longer works. Mavericks beta broke that. In fact now when you restore the InstallESD.dmg, all you get is the packages folder. It looks like the rest will need to be manually created.

Yeah I just updated on the exact matter. I was hoping the GM would revert back to previous releases. IIRC, one of those packages is used to create the bootable volume. I did it a few weeks ago, I'll have to research it again. Sorry!

in fact the previous ways on making a mavericks beta usb install also no longer work. so, i am hoping someone can point us in the right direction.

Recent OSX versions have had to be purchased. I don't see any reason why this would be any different.

If you can't see the merit in paying a nominal fee of $20-30, then don't upgrade.

As a software developer, I want as many people to upgrade as possible. More people would upgrade if it was free and pushed out via software update instead of having to go looking for it.

One of the reasons iOS has a better ecosystem is the free OS updates. Apple should do the same thing with OS X.
