Yes, 2008 Mac Pros. The full list was posted in one of the other threads and it's pretty much the same as support for 10.8.

Plus they can still swap in graphics before final release. I would guess visual tweaks to apps are more likely than to the OS itself.

Glad that my mid 2009 MacBook pro will still be supported. The new features look cool, and it is about time for better support if you have more than one screen. Menu bar on each screen is a neat idea too.

>8 hours of battery? What computer are they using? Also, it would be cool if it could run a script when the battery gets to a certain level.

----------

I wouldn't call it impressive. I think people were just sat on the edge of their seats after the 2008 MBA & 1,1 cutoff last year.

2007 machines are from 6 years ago, not bad.

----------

Really? Support for computers older than 6 years??! Id be surprised if all the bits haven't fallen off on a 7 year old computer - man I lived a different life in 2007, I think I've been through about 5 Macbook Pro's and a Macbook Air since then!

Sounds like my '06 MacBook, but most computers that old are fine.

My Macbook Late 2007 is about to hit 6 years old. It would be flawless short of all the scratched plastic if the battery had not decided to explode. $100 I could put toward a new notebook there. I edit my podcast on that machine.

IS there anyway to get the old notes app back as well as the linen background for folders on launch pad and notification centre?

I've used it recently....trying to get GIFwatcher to work on a Mac 128K. No luck. Seems to need the Mac 512K.

There are 2007 models as well. Basically, if you Mac has a 64-bit UEFI (think BIOS or Open Firmware), it can run Mavericks

I have a 3,1 MacBook (late 2007) and I can see I have 64 bit EFI:

$ ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi
| | "firmware-abi" = <"EFI64">

So... Am I missing something? I've never tried to boot it with 64 bits, though, but I think I can... I'm using Lion right now, and I hate it. Hate it. I'm going back to SL if I can't get Mavericks to work.

What do you think? Should I be able to run Mavericks despite apple's official "support"? I think Mavericks would run just as smoonth as SL on this machine...

Well done! Quick question, if you tag a file with the iCloud tag, which happens to be in your local documents folder, will it automatically sync that file up to iCloud in the respective application?

How do you create custom tags? I haven't bothered with it as it didn't seem pertinent to my needs, however if it goes beyond color tagging by allowing files to be organized on a custom tag, that's a whole other matter.

You can write iMessages from notification center.

Also, iMessages is broken and won't work...

It's been very spotty for me. I've had to delete and enable my accounts on my Mac Pro, MacBook Air and iDevices. Finally got it working well.

My mid 2007 iMac is still churning along good. I may do a clean install with this though, since it will probably be my last for this machine.

I question their definition of "support". Example: my late 2010 MBA is supported by Mountain Lion, but not one of the key new features: Air Play. Buried in the technical notes, it explains that it can not be supported on my machine due to the graphics processor. A 3rd party program (AirParrot) works just fine mirroring my desktop and audio to my aTV.

So while Mavericks may "support" my MBA, I'll be shocked if AirPlay materializes. How knows what other little features are to be left out?

Um... no. I'm pretty sure that's the point. Notes is different in iOS as well... and for the much... much better I might add.

I wonder if tags are compatible with openmeta tags. I have been using the app "Tags" from Caseapps.com. I wonder if they are compatible or if I will need to retag all my files.

Personally, I think they should dump support of older machines without hesitation, those older machines can continue to run the OS and programmes they run today and ran previously, they don't *need* to be updated as much as (this is my personal opinion) newer machines shouldn't have to be crippled or restricted in some way by the legacy machines demanding equal support out there of OS and applications.

.

agreed. I thought they loved snowleopard anyway

My thanks to all who posted tidbits on the new OS. Contrary to Lion/ML, everything sounded great - all the improvements that one could reasonably want in an upgrade ...

... and then someone posted this: "Software Update moves to AppStore".

Stuffed it!

Linen was weird in 2005 when it appeared on the settings panes of Dashboard widgets.

It remains weird 8 years later. Good riddance.

Looking forward to seeing iOS 7 (only 7 months old!) get refined, and then OS X can take on a similar modern look.

(I like the new Dock. But they should use it on the bottom edge too: less of a space hog. And the Dock should be on the left by default anyway! Keeps it out of the way of scrollbars, AND doesn't constrain the vertical size of scrolling windows.)

Way to make me feel really old, dude.

Well, you've been here a while too. We're both getting old. ;)

Thanks for telling me about this!:):) Dropbox's size limitation became a problem for me when I started storing and collecting photos from my Boy Scout troop for a slide show. Was getting to the point where I needed to decide what to back up or not. 5GB is a nice amount to get for a referral too, and it is nice that they don't limit you to a certain number of referrals.

Glad you like it! Make sure you get a bunch of referrals soon! I heard somewhere online they are only having unlimited referrals during this "beginning" stage. So I don't know how much longer they will offer that. But it is definitely a fantastic service!

That's pretty much what it is. the only difference is with the new tabs in Finder you can now have a dedicated tab with tags.

For example. I work on several spreadsheets and a few other files on a daily basis. I marked them all with the blue tag and changed the blue tag name in the sidebar to daily work.
Now all I have to do is click on the daily work and everything is there instead of in different folders like photos, movies etc..

It is quite handy.

OK, so I could achieve almost the same thing in Snow Leopard by saving as a folder a search for a particular label. Or to attempt what you've used labels for in another way, a saved search for documents modified this week.

Cheers!

Has anyone had a chance to look at how screen sharing works in 10.9? Screen sharing in both Lion and Mountain Lion have been giving me issues and I am hoping Apple has gotten around to rewriting the code for screen sharing in 10.9.

Also, has Apple fixed NFSv4 in 10.9. NFSv4 is broken in Mountain Lion. Nice to see that SMB2 is being used and SMBX is gone.

as an ios Dev I'm quite enjoying ios7, how are you osx devs feeling about 10.9. should I spot the 99.00 to give it a go? also with OS X do you get the final retail version once released (as in it will receive updates, etc.) or do you still have to buy and wipe your machine? I've never really thought about it with IOS since to OS. basically comes free.

I have to admit, I'm not a fan of the new notes app. Okay, they overdid skeumorphism, I get it. But, the notes app looks like a cheesy cheap notes app I might have had in Windows 95. It's so plain, and boring. iOS 7 was a pleasant departure from Skeumorphism as is most of what I've seen from OSX Mavericks. But I have to say, I hope the notes app isn't the only one that looks like they forgot to remove skeumorphism at the last minute and stuck some app from System 7 back into OSX.

You can do custom tags, it's pretty easy actually, you click on the file, then the tags button and just type in whatever you want. It seems to automatically recognize the iCloud tag as what's in your iCloud too, so the tagging system seems somewhat intelligent.

Wish they had kept the horizontal lines in the notes app. They made it easier for me to keep track of which line I was reading.

Why is the OS name plural anyway? OS X releases have always had singular names... Tiger, Panther, Lion, Leopard, etc... now... Mavericks?

OS X Maverick would have sounded nicer.

Also, moving from felines to livestock? Kind of a downgrade I think...

What are you talking about? Maverick is not a location in California. Mavericks is. That is now the new theme for OS release names. Big cats are out. Locations of interest in CA are in.

1. OS XI will never happen. OS X is a brand, and its here to stay.

2. I've been really impressed with the stability of Mavericks so far. I haven't used or tested it extensively yet, but I like it far more than the previous "tick" which was Lion. Fortunately, it seems to match the stability of SL and ML, especially for being an early beta.

This seems to be a hallmark of the post-Forstall era, and I for one welcome it. During Forstall's reign as software chief Apple's software had gotten progressively buggier and buggier, and Forstall didn't seem to really care. It was much more frustrating than any of the skeumorphic stuff, but it seems that with his dismissal Apple has finally came to its senses and is focusing on quality.

Take the podcast app for instance. I really didn't mind the reel-to-reel recorder thing, it was just a decoration. But what I did mind was that the app rarely worked right, crashed a lot, refused to do what I asked it to do etc. Now compare that with the first post-Forstall update. Yeah the recorder is gone, but so are almost all of the bugs. I have had 0 problems with it. Infinitely more important than whether or not the calendar has a leather attache.
