Hallelujah! I can't stand the current dock. I can never tell which apps are running. This return-to-Tiger version looks much cleaner and clearer.

You could easily change it yourself.

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES

So according to the keynote you can create any number of new tags for your files.

My questions are:

1. is there a hard-coded limit (like 10 tags)? or not?
2. when selecting the color for each tag ... can you only chose from 8 that apple display? or can you select a custom color from a color selector?

Thanx

As far as I know, you aren't limited in the number of tags, but you are restricted to the 8 apple colors.

I'm surprised Apple didn't give Mavericks the same "flat" look that IOS7 will have. That would've been cool, IMO.
There's a simple reason for this:
They didn't have enough time for both iOS 7 and OS X. I guess redesigning OS X is the next thing that's going to happen. Apple knew that a refresh of iOS 7 was very very necessary. OS X not so much. And honestly, merely a year to refresh iOS like they did is not much time.

Which models get the new OS? I'm guessing 2008 and up?

Yes, 2008 Mac Pros. The full list was posted in one of the other threads and it's pretty much the same as support for 10.8.

Plus they can still swap in graphics before final release. I would guess visual tweaks to apps are more likely than to the OS itself.

I know that ... I just hadn't thought about Font/DA Mover in a looooong time

I've used it recently....trying to get GIFwatcher to work on a Mac 128K. No luck. Seems to need the Mac 512K.

There are 2007 models as well. Basically, if you Mac has a 64-bit UEFI (think BIOS or Open Firmware), it can run Mavericks

Text Shortcuts - Text shortcuts that were previously only available on iOS have been added with Mavericks. For example, "omw" is replaced with "On my way!" as in iOS.

Text Shortcuts / Substitutions were made popular by TextExpander then OSX built-in the basic functionality in Snow Leopard I believe, then they were added to iOS 5.

Just because someone just noticed it doesn't make it new.

Are the file "tags" just re-branded labels, made a bit more prominent (accessible from the save as window, for instance)?

Labels were a Finder feature I think I never saw anyone else use... I found it useful to highlight particular files in a busy folder.

That's pretty much what it is. the only difference is with the new tabs in Finder you can now have a dedicated tab with tags.

For example. I work on several spreadsheets and a few other files on a daily basis. I marked them all with the blue tag and changed the blue tag name in the sidebar to daily work.
Now all I have to do is click on the daily work and everything is there instead of in different folders like photos, movies etc..

It is quite handy.

Why is the OS name plural anyway? OS X releases have always had singular names... Tiger, Panther, Lion, Leopard, etc... now... Mavericks?

OS X Maverick would have sounded nicer.

Also, moving from felines to livestock? Kind of a downgrade I think...

"Hey look everyone, I didn't watch the keynote!"

Registered developer for Mavericks?

Do you have to be a registered developer to install Mavericks? I have a dev account for iOS. Just wasnt sure how the OSX stuff worked.
I can get the install file online.
Thanks in advance.

Officially, yes you need to be a registered developer. Unofficially, :)

I don't think that was their intention. California locations is what they had in mind. Some suggestions:

La Brea (runs like molasses)
San Andreas (catastrophically unstable)
Tahoe (freezes regularly)
Lombard (pretty but slow)
Sacramento (dysfunctional)
Telegraph (keeps begging you for money)
Alcatraz (the most locked-down OS yet)
Pasadena (shuts down every night at 8:30)
Atherton (open only to the wealthiest customers)
San Fernando (optimized for porn)
Donner (cannibalizes other Apple products)
Zabriskie (spontaneously combusts)
Cupertino (assumes you don't know what you want until it shows it to you)

I suggest, with tongue firmly in cheek: Big Sur.

iCloud Folder - Finder has a new iCloud folder, which displays documents that are stored in the cloud.

Has this been officially addressed??

I can't find screenshots or any info on this other than that linked 9to5 mac article, which doesn't explain it either....

This is potentially a huge feature!!

You could sense in the keynote and even see it in Tims face.. Apple is definitely going full force and I couldnt help but smile for for most part..

A little confession
I even clapped when I saw the iOS 7 vid even though I was home alone

i clapped alot @home not sure if i stood up like everyone and clapped but what the hell - it was awesome.:D

"Hey look everyone, I didn't watch the keynote!"

why does it matter if they didn't watch the keynote? people have jobs and other things to do besides sit on their asses and watch a keynote. don't hate on someone just because they didn't watch a keynote

There's a truck next to Dropbox. Has Apple finally given us a new version of Font/DA Mover?

:D
That's Transmit (an FTP client by Panic).

I think I just figured out the iCloud folder confusion.

If you tag a file with the iCloud tag it will show up in the iCloud tag in the finder sidebar. Any subsequent file saved to iCloud will also show up in the iCloud tag in the Finder sidebar.
