Awesome.

Some years seem better than others in terms of new software. I have a feeling that the Mt. Lion/iOS 6 combo will be a 'peak' year that puts the last 2 years to shame.

Like Peanut Butter & Jelly.

Those of us in the OS X and iOS ecosystem are probably going to absolutely love the integration.

Good feature to those who need it, but not an issue as based on the screenshot it can be disabled or enabled..

Apple should have some sort of auto update mechanism.

To keep it in check, they could have checkboxes like this:
- "Automatically update once an update has been available for 10 days."
- "Automatically update once an update has been well reviewed by at least five users."

They could also allow for users to easily rollback an update.

(By waiting 10 days, it allows the developer some time to receive reports about an obscure but severe bug and pull it before it's automatically downloaded by all of their users. Or by waiting until the update has been well reviewed, it means several users can confirm that the update is excellent.)

the main thing is why he is using dropbox AND google drive??

RAID?

It is nice to see that it can be turned off. You might not want all the software you install on your 2TB iMac to appear on your SSD equipped MBA.

I wish there was the option to turn off other iOS inspired features in OS X. Some are useful some of the time, while others are a pain in the neck.

I definitely don't want automatic updates.. sometimes they screw up apps that were previously working perfectly. Now, every time an update is released for an app that is important to me, I give it some time and research if there are any issues with that update.

I don’t think this feature installs updates automatically. It’s to ensure that when you download an app on one computer, it installs on all your other Macs as well. Like Automatic Downloads in iOS.

Most did downgrade, a lot didn't even "update" to lion, and if apple hadn't disallowed iCloud (even to mm subscribers) on sl (while they had no problem offering the app store to make money), almost no one with any sense would have updated to lion.

Watch your manners btw. And don't misinform users, I ve had a lot of Linux boxes through time, and wine is not a viable solution, good old windows xp and 7 will extend the life of older macs though. Ubuntu is not where it should be, the biggest Linux distro, and it's also grown much more demanding than it used to be, and equally buggy. I am sorry I can't recommend Linux I d like to, but I can't. Not to anyone who's not very well versed in computers.

(btw I like how you implicitly or not so implicitly agreed, that a. Another os will extend older macs life, and that lion users did have to endure...)

While it might work OK for high capacity iOS devices, I would think most people have have 16GB devices are already almost full to capacity. I honestly don't have the room to spare for autoupdate to have a second version of an app on it that I haven't installed yet...Unless it forces the app update/install, in which case I don't like it at all.

That's what a new version is far. A collection of bug fixes and the addition of new features all bundled together in a large update. Of course OS X hasn't lost it's excitement. You've written extensively about issue. Excitement "can" be both good and bad you know? People that have lost interest typically ignore the item they've lost interest in.

I really think updates should be included in ML and iOS 6. I've seen too many phones with app store badge counts in the 20s. Even if you make it easy to update an app ...a lot of people just can't be bothered.

Fair point about it not losing its excitement, well taken. :D

Some integration is good, some not. Apple made iOS separate from OS X because of fundamentally different needs. That seems a little forgotten with some features.

Airplay Mirroring of OS X on Apple TV is great, but how about letting me Airplay Mirror my iOS device on my Mac? Or my Mac on my iPad so I can use it as a second screen (I know you can buy 3rd-party apps, but that isn't the same as OS native).

I would love to be able to turn off Auto Save. I save at known points in my work where everything is in an order I want. I like control over the state of my files. If I try some edits that I don't like, it is very easy to go back to the point I want because I have marked that point with a save. Plus I find the Date Modified field very useful, that is lost if I open the file to check something (which I do a lot).

EDIT: And Versions is a waste of time and causes file bloat. I don't want a record of my work in progress.

Oh. Thanks, for some reason I was thinking your were strictly talking about iCloud features (most of which can be turned off individually)

Auto Save needs a bit of polish as well as Resume IMO.

I'm no fan of the iOS-ification/"dumbing down" of Mac OS X, whatever you want to call it, but it seems to be this is a sensible option to have... and if you don't like it it, it looks like you can click close and not worry about it? As it should be with many other things... hopefully this is the first of many realisations that simple choices can be good for more users than a single, forced Apple point of view that may or may not change in the future when the mood takes them.

And yet more iOSification coming to OS X...while necessary under-the-hood improvements remain at the bottom of the priority stack for Apple.

It's ok. We'll get our new filesystem within 2 years.

Yup ..the point of having an Apple ID and having connected devices is ease of downloading content and, hopefully in the near future, ease of updating software.

Not much good for me, being a poor boy with only one Mac, but hey, nifty :)

Totally off topic - anyone else think it would be nice to see your countdown timer frm the clock app visible in notification centre when it's counting down?

Unless the news is os x mountain lion fixes most of lion's ****, nothing to get excited about.

OS X has lost all it's excitement anyway, no doubt since the b team of apple is developping it, when they do that is, it's become a very problematic os at its core, apple are right to be disallowing it from a older systems because it makes them resource hogs. Anyone out to extend the lifetime of their older mac should simply install windows, period.

They better be giving out for free btw, no one charges for a service pack, not even Microsoft, and with the things lion users had to endure it will be a common decency, of there's any of that left still at apple.

Well said just seem to be a big service pack than a new OS. It will probably be a 29.99 upgrade still don't see much to be excited about, will wait till .1 is out before I play with it.

This person speaks the truth. I've already moved on to win7 through bootcamp, the transition wasn't as painful as I thought it would be.

I despair. Yet more reasons not to buy a serious machine for professional work from a phone company.

The dumbing down of what used to be a tremendous OS is depressing.

OSX is dead.

Define Service Pack.

Hell you can call "any" OS upgrade a Service Pack if your definition is liberal enough.

So you save to separate files? And have never accidentally saved over the wrong version?

I've actually been saved by versions once or twice, accidentally saving a reduced resolution piece of artwork over the full resolution one. Versions and go back. My biggest complaint is that "Export" doesn't have a keyboard shortcut, as I still need to use "save as.." all the time.
