I never noticed this reception problem when holding my BlackBerry Bold 9000. But then that would be the only thing good about that POS. I'll start using my new iPhone which arrived yesterday right on time (but with shockingly little packing material via AT&T) once I can find a decent case.

.

A lot of people have phones from other brands with the same problem of loosing signal while holding it and they don't even know about it. I have an iPhone and I have some friends that hate apple and are always telling me that it sucks, etc Giving me apple bad news, like this loosing signal while holding it etc. One of them has a HTC HD2, I took his phone, hold it and the signal went full down. So, it's exactly the same issue as iphone and some other brands have.

Guys, don’t believe any Android fanboys stating they don’t have the problem. They will do absolutely everything to put Apple down. Nexus One does have a problem even according to Engadget.

Whatever brand it is, the customer should be made aware of the possibility of such issue, and upfront, so that he or she can make the final judgment. Not have to wait for people like Steve Jobs to tell them that it is a non-issue, because for me personally – a lefty – it is far from a non-issue.

At least now we know how to read this "This changes everything. Again".

my new iphone 4 is fine!

UK based, using Vodafone, I am in a low signal area! I don't seem to have an issue. It doesn't matter how I hold the phone, I still don't get any signal loss when bridging the antennas with my hand.

Did I just get a good one?

Apple just lost me as a customer. What a bunch of callous jerks. Ive never had a single phone that I could kill every single call just by holding it normally. This may sit well with Apple fanboys and apologists, but not with me. I'm just a consumer that wants the most for my money.

Lol. I love sarcasm...

Plus, unlike the iPhone you'd have to hold it in a completely un-natural* position to block the signal. Had the 6230i, it was a great phone and was incredibly strong in regard to signal strength.

*Maybe Apple considers lefties un-natural.

Well, that is not true at all. See the 6230 manual post in this thread. The 'bad' position is just like the gentle position showed in the YouTube video...very natural and normal..

Just did the same test with the 3GS. It has the exact same problem.

As long as my phone calls work fine, who cares.

I just did the same test with my Sony Ericsson W890i, exactly the same problem. Jobs is right, it's just interesting this was not a generally known fact about mobile phones until now....

HTC HD2, exactly the same problem.

You simply have to slightly adjust the way you hold your phone. Is that such a horrible thing that your ready to freak out and swear off Apple forever? Overreact much?

You make it sound so simple. People have been holding phones for years. they way they hold it is a habit, its not something you can just change easily.

and its not just 'lefties'. Lots of right handed people hold the phone to their left ear - I find I can listen/concentrate better, and obviously I also have my right hand free for notes etc.

Here in France, we also have this so called issue, so don't blame AT&T :D

Anyway, we did the test at work yesterday with three different phones, on the same network : iPhone 3GS, Nexus One and HTC Legend.

We've been able to reproduce the signal loss by holding the phones with ALL THREE phones. So, I think people are looking into it too much.

That doesn't matter to me. I'm not spending £400 on "the best phone in the world" if it has this problem. That won't do.

Also hoping my iPod 5.5G lives for another year or that the next iPod touch doesn't follow this design.

I tried to reproduce this problem on my 3GS, and I have the exact same problem when holding my phone with left hand. My signal goes from full to one or two bars. I wasn't able to reproduce it with right hand.

Oh, grow up! This isn't a concerted campaign by Android "fanboys". The ones reporting the problem are the ones who actually own an Apple iPhone 4.

btw - I have a nexus one (and an iPhone 3G) and have never had any 3G reception issues with either of them no matter how I hold it (I'm a lefty too). The new iPhone appears to have reception issues in certain circumstances. Apple can either say it's just a user/usage problem (which seems to be Stevie's position) or admit to a fundamental design problem. I think we all know which path they'll take, and that means this will run and run...:D.

I can't find any way to make the signal go down with my 3GS. I've been trying for about 10 minutes, and I'm not in a strong signal area. I'll keep the 3GS a couple of months longer than planned and then reorder a 4 if they get it sorted, otherwise wait for 5. I cancelled my 2 July delivery already.

The problem is NOT that a phone loses a bit of reception when you hold it in your hand. Indeed many phones do that. 5 or 4 bars don't really matter.

BUT:

The problem with the iPhone 4 is that it drops calls and loses the internet connection when you hold it in your hand. And other phones don't have such a issue.

De-rail - apologies

Guys!! It's fine, I found a fix. No need to worry.

N1 does have reception problems... and even on the google forums a google rep said pretty much the same thing (hold it a different way). But the issue was more about crappy 3G performance, not 5 bars to no service.

oh btw, the google rep said that google determined the poor reception problem was a hardware issue and they would no longer investigate because they considered the issue solved.
