Why does Apple need to redesign the mac pro? It's awesome the way it is. Redesign just for sake of a redesign is foolish.

That said, I would expect a silent Mac Pro update.

Agreed. And the only way Steve will announce a new Mac Pro at WWDC is if its gonna look very different. Silent update for sure..... unless a completely new case design.

Either way, Im not waiting till September to buy a new computer, thats for sure. I'll be happy to "compromise" and buy a FASTER i7 imac for hundreds less (oh yeah, and the 27" monitor is a nice bonus.)

I personally think the design is fine right now for professional use.... really. It works fine and is easily upgradeable.. most pro users would be ok with it as long as its significantly faster. The only thing undesirable about it? The image of the existing Mac Pro is gradually becoming an icon for last year's technology at today's prices. If Steve would unveil a "new" Mac Pro with the same old case, I'm afraid some in the audience may actually laugh. I can't imagine he would brag about anything in a 7 year old case design. Thats just not Apple's style I don't think. The audience would lean forward in their seats and wait in anticipation of the sides of the case falling off and Steve reaching inside and pulling out the smaller and more powerful REAL new Mac Pro. .... (and the crowd roars).......

Well, being as you need a computer to use the iPhone and iPad, I doubt Apple is turning their backs on their desktop systems any time soon.

Google is already moving past needing a computer for their mobile devices. By comparison, pluggin my iPod touch into my computer and waiting ages for it to do whatever the hell it's doing seems archaic.

What happened to your G5?

Basically every piece that could fail, failed. Right after Applecare expired and right after the switch to intel was announced. It would have taken $1100 to repair the stuff I couldn't fix myself - and that would have been for hardware I knew was being phased out.

My Intel MacPro at work (not my purchase) was bought refurbed and it's been rock solid.

Steve didn't say they were going away totally, he just theorized that computers would be used more specialized tasks (his truck analogy from the AllThingsD conference).

Over the past couple of years, I have moved a lot of my little mundane tasks (checking e-mail, reading news headlines, checking stocks/weather/sports) to my iPod touch. When I get an iPad (maybe next year), even more of my tasks will head that direction.

I will still need a computer for HD video editing, maybe photo editing, but already I find myself using my MacBook far less frequently and it has left the house maybe 2-3 times each year since the App Store went live.

Editing HD video is a consumer-grade task these days with inexpensive HD camcorders like Flip, as well as pricier AVCHD camcorders and digital SLRs. There are more consumers who need CPU power, but for short periods of time.

Agreed, they won't go away totally, but the desktop computer market is going to crater at some point. I think Steve is positioning to keep apple out of that sinking market. When the desktop computer market does crash, only a strong few will be left, making machines for people who really need power. At that point they will be made in lower volumes, and I could see prices rising.

Just a little bit of theorizing. I think Balmer's thoughts on the PC market are WAY off, but honestly, what else could he say publicly that wouldn't disappoint shareholders? Not much.

Jason Chen makes an appearance at WWDC officially announcing the 4th gen iPhone.

That would be hilarious.

Steve: "And finally, the moment you've ALL been waiting for -."

Room falls quiet.

Steve: "Mr. Jason Chen! Give him a round of applause, everyone!"

Mac Pros

Now we have an OS that is meant to love multiple cores, why would they stop at 2 6-cores ? Why not a 4 processor 6-core top end ? Or is Xgrid the solution ?

It's June and nobody seems to miss iLife '10?
Cougarcat is right.

The iLife suite is strongly aligned to the consumer iMac. I'm not expecting an iMac refresh next week. Maybe in July-August. That would be the most likely debut of a new version of iLife.

Depending on if Apple has more plans for MobileMe or some additional online services (streaming iTunes?), the iLife suite might be more tied to that as well.

Apple removed the year from the iLife packaging, to lessen the emphasis on an annual update of the software suite (which used to happen frequently at Macworld in January).

iMACs!!!

What about iMacs?.. Im holding myself to don't buy it until next update.
I really want a 27'' i7.

Historically Apple has debuted new iMacs in January or August. I don't know they have ever debuted a new iMac at WWDC in June.

Thus, the chances of a new iMac next week are rather low.

The case (the outside of it) has been unchanged since 2003. I'm sure Apple could bring some great new innovative things to the table now that it's 2010.
So what? A thing of beauty is always beautiful! :)

The only improvement that they could make (and I don't expect no one to object), other than more external ports, would be to drop the extra drive opening on the front fascia if you only have one drive. Yep, there' the expandability argument. But, from an aesthetics/function perspective I don't like visible allowances for non-existent features.

I'm shallow, I know.

...and waiting a few hours to download a movie (or sometimes a show depending on bandwidth) is any less archaic? I'd rather plug my iDevice into my Mac Pro through a faster USB connection than have to use a slower internet connection to access my media (and if the rumors are true, I'd hate to have to access ALL my media through the web, especially in places where I may not receive a signal - ahem, AT&T). Until wireless clouds reach acceptable download/upload speeds, I'll stick with a direct connection...

EDIT: If your iPod or iPhone is taking too long to sync, there's an issue with your system. Reset your device, or delete the associated .plist files for iTunes and your iDevice. It shouldn't take more than 10-20 seconds to backup your iPhone/iPod Touch before syncing.

Hell, spending over $2000 on a personal computer is insane to me. The last time I did that was on my POS G5. After that crappy thing broke down, I vowed to never again spend over $2000 on a computer for my personal use.
YMMV. My 4½ year old G5 is still going strong, and all I've done is added extra (cheaper-than-Apple's) RAM and a second HDD. It's done me very well, and over the years the cost isn't bad.

But Apple does seem to be concentrating on content consumption rather than content creation. Hopefully, in the haze of iPhone/iPad excitement, they haven't lost sight of the fact that content consumers actually consume content that's created by... content creators.

It's a circle, Steve!

I sure hope so. Apple's inordinate amount of focus on iPhone/iPad this year along with SJ saying that the PC/desktop era is ending has me worried and skeptical.

Yes it the PC desktop age is coming to an end, but if you listened, SJ said they are like trucks. They have a purpose, but are not practical for the average person.

Ballmer says PCs will always be needed. You just change the definition. While he is right, he hasn't figured out they don't need Windoze. I would love to see the day that M$oft issues a press release saying they are shutting down.

Their only hope is to continue their dominance of corporate America. Once that gig falls apart, they have nothing left.

OS X 10.7
iLife '10
iWork '10
announced for November release in a combo pack

iTunes will not be cloud based, but may have a cloud based backup option.

I disagree with those who limit the potential of iLife just to OSX.

iLife for the iPad would be a great opportunity to convince undecided people about buying one.

Agreed the case is fine. I love the easy to work on design. IMO, there is no way the 27" monitor will be announced without the Mac Pro also being updated.

Unless he is desperate to announce something that everyone hasn't already seen and spec'ed to death. ;)

You are forgetting that Mr. Jobs apparently has no sense of humor. If this was Saturday Night Live, Jason Chen would come out and give the keynote.

I'm sure they could. The question is: does Apple care any more about desktops?

Yes, if they want to keep making money.

Aside from consumers, you have development houses using Mac Pro's. I know of one company that has all their hundred or so employees using Mac Pro's.

With Google ditching Microsoft for Linux and migrating to Apple, I'm sure they'd be fairly interested in using Mac Pro's rather than iMac's.

Mac Pros are not dead; the next iteration will not disappoint. :apple:
