iPhone OS 4.0 beta for iPad

Basically it would be time for iPad OS 4.0 beta for the developers, at least if they wanna keep the usual 3month beta period.

iLife, and iWork would be nice, but i doubt it since the teams were quite busy doing the iWork for iPad. Or maybe just cause of that they have something for us.

iwork.com will get out of beta? maybe with Mobile me?

when i was looking at Apples HTML5 demos i could not stop thinking that they will also update more than only mobile me mail. maybe there will be a new gallery? more gallery styles?
but hey, for that a new iLife would be quite handy client side.

oh, one more thing:
MobileMe gallery app for iPhone is still not available for the iPad, neither is the iDisk app. (and honestly they should be part of the OS) so i'll wait for that too.

Widgets, baby!

Yes, if they want to keep making money.

Aside from consumers, you have development houses using Mac Pro's. I know of one company that has all their hundred or so employees using Mac Pro's.

With Google ditching Microsoft for Linux and migrating to Apple, I'm sure they'd be fairly interested in using Mac Pro's rather than iMac's.

I sure hope so. Apple's inordinate amount of focus on iPhone/iPad this year along with SJ saying that the PC/desktop era is ending has me worried and skeptical.

New 27" display?

New 27" dispaly? Sounds great...if they put it near the price of the current 24" model and siginificantly lower the price of that one. :D

(Or am I the only one who thinks it's overpriced?)

At least not for the Apple TV. I think..

DO'H!

If you look at the state of the Mac and OS X, there really isn't much that needs to be discussed. Sure, Apple could improve some drivers, clean up a few bugs, but iPhone/iPad and the iPhone OS is where the attention needs to be, in order to bring maturity to the platform. Snow Leopard has reset the operating system for the next five or so years.

But it's always been that way, Tiger was the latest and greatest, it's feature set was amazing at the time, but Apple still spoke about Leopard...

I'd just like to hear something about 10.7, to give mac developers something to look forward to, but I'm not holding my breath, sadly the iPhone is the be all of Apple at the moment.

I think Steve is right, but he puts very little emphasis on those people creating content. Stuff like animation, design, and photograhy can take some power.

Perhaps Apple just doesn't want to compete in that market anymore. They wouldn't have to be dependent on Intel or AMD to provide chips.

I don't think the rest of the world will need powerful computers like mine. I'll always need a workstation. I'd rather that workstation be a mac, but we'll see if that ever comes down from the ridiculous prices. Spending over $3000 for a personal computer (non-business purchase) is insane.

Hell, spending over $2000 on a personal computer is insane to me. The last time I did that was on my POS G5. After that crappy thing broke down, I vowed to never again spend over $2000 on a computer for my personal use. My bosses can spend what they want, however. ;)

Well, being as you need a computer to use the iPhone and iPad, I doubt Apple is turning their backs on their desktop systems any time soon.

Those are consumer products, so that's doubtful unless they leverage some new APIs or technologies for developers.

I'm going to play it safe and say the keynote will go something like this:

1. Steve on awesome Apple is doing; brag about iPad sales
2. A good amount of time on Safari 5. Demoing HTML5 stuff, new plugin support w/ approval process, developers Apple asked to make some cool HTML 5 websites and plugins which they demo. Public Beta released.
3. "Now, on to iPhone OS." Rehash of iPhone OS 4. GM released that day.
4. Demo of OS 4 on iPad. Specific new features––Account support, new springboard, and perhaps a better way of managing files. Beta released to developers.
5. Something new with MobileMe. New features, or at least a different pricing structure--free sync, and paid email/storage.
6. iPhone HD. Preorder now, available the 18th. Steve and Schiller demo video chat for way too long. Comes with a free year of the full MobileMe.

The only other thing I could potentially see happening is a MacPro update, and this would only happen with a significant redesign.

I have my own list too on what we could be seeing next week's keynote.
But feel free to disagree. :)

After using laptops for the last 5 years, my wife told me to build her a tower. Even she recognizes you won't get the performance or life out of a laptops. Sure, she'll probably just use it to play the Sims or something, but there's no chance her once $500 laptop will run it. A $500 desktop, on the other hand, will let you count Clive Jr's nose hairs...

I know Steve wants to be cutting edge, but I think he's jumping the gun to kill the desktop. Creative professionals would suffer without the power of a workstation... And Prosumers are still looking for their desktop-class solution, by the by... Steve, are you listening?

Predictions

Apparently my psychic abilities have remained dormant, since I've never successfully predicted Apple's next move. By eliminating past blunders from Apple and other technology companies, you could predict what might be announced.

Apple mistakes that won't be repeated...
  • A box that connects to your TV that isn't a hobby: Pipin
  • Brought to market an interface that was still in beta: Newton
  • Putting Apple software in someone else's hardware: Rockr Phone
  • Put a competitor on your board of directors: Google
Mistakes from other companies...
  • Develop a device that no one uses after a month: Netbook
  • Buy a company because they have the money to burn: HP>Palm
  • Use ancient tech and sell it as new: Surface Coffee Table
  • Scrap a device that's a viable alternative to the competition: Courier
  • Toy Company + Computer Company = Creep Fest

But feel free to disagree. :) <snip>

Pretty good list. I'd forgotten about widgets for the iPad; that is highly likely. Maybe developers will even be able to move their OS X widgets over without and work (they are just little webpages, after all). That would be cool.

Regarding what 10.7 may bring, check out screenshots of the new MobileMe Mail. OS X is going to look like that. Very much influenced by iPhone OS.

All the iTunes and music streaming stuff I think they will leave for september (except for AppleTV, if they want to release a developer SDK for it.)

If the new iPhone has 802.11n, wireless sync would be a definite possibility. Not sure if they would allow wireless for older models.

What we will not see:
  • Application Store (App Store for OS X)
  • Magic Mouse with cable or recharger
  • OS X++ (comes spring/summer 2011)
  • iMac or MacBook with multitouch display
  • iDisplay/iTV/iFridge with slot for iPad/iPhone
  • Mobile Me for free
  • MB Air updates (it’s gonna be buried silently, future MB[P]s are thin enough)
  • Micro-USB port on iPhone
  • DVI / HDMI / Display Port / … interface for dock connector of iGadgets
  • iPhone as slim as iPod Touch
  • new iPod Classic (only minor updates before being merged with Touch)
  • free iOS 4 update for iPod Touch
  • Steve Jobs dance
  • iTunes X in Cocoa
  • Bluetooth keyboards for iPhone / iPod Touch
  • iStilus

I'm about ready for hosted media. I am sick of fixing itunes media and finding new storage to put video content on (it's expensive overhead i don't really want to build on) and if a big amount of that can be handled remotely and accessed wherever I want to use it the idea might just work.

Agreed. The desktop is far from dead. I think this kind of polarizing and provocative statement is classic SJ and is designed to attract attention and of course sell iPads.

The fact that you have to connect the iPad to a computer before you can get it to function says a lot.

Steve didn't say they were going away totally, he just theorized that computers would be used more specialized tasks (his truck analogy from the AllThingsD conference).

Over the past couple of years, I have moved a lot of my little mundane tasks (checking e-mail, reading news headlines, checking stocks/weather/sports) to my iPod touch. When I get an iPad (maybe next year), even more of my tasks will head that direction.

I will still need a computer for HD video editing, maybe photo editing, but already I find myself using my MacBook far less frequently and it has left the house maybe 2-3 times each year since the App Store went live.

Editing HD video is a consumer-grade task these days with inexpensive HD camcorders like Flip, as well as pricier AVCHD camcorders and digital SLRs. There are more consumers who need CPU power, but for short periods of time.

What happened to your G5?

I remember the G5s in general were heat monsters and problematic. I was using my G4 MDD during that era so I missed out on those problems but I've bought many of Apple's pro models over the years and they've all lasted me at least 6 years. My MDD is still going strong (if a little slow now) and I'm sure if I plugged in my Beige G3 it would fire up.

The Intel Mac Pros the last couple years have been pretty solid. The only thing I would add is on-board esata. I can't imagine how Apple could improve on the case design... the riser cards are fantastic and adding HDs is just as easy. (Maybe when SSDs become more prominent, Apple will redesign the Mac Pro around those and be able to fit in more in the same space.)
