I'm new to the iPhone world and have been reading up on the best affordable cases around. Otterbox looks pretty tight, and I'm tempted to try the Commuter. My only concern is the thickness that it will add to the 4S. I'm coming fresh off of playing with a 4g iPod Touch so I'm aware that anything else will be thicker in comparison. But how about it, does the Commuter give the phone a lot more girth?

Also, how does Commuter compare to the Reflex?

(I hope I've contributed well to keep the solid thread rolling :) )

I had the Commuter for a week or so and didn't like it. The silicone attracts dust and lint like crazy. The plastic shell also seemed cheap and flimsy - it was a pain trying to get it in its proper place.

My buddy has the Reflex and I really liked it. It seems to offer great protection and a minimal design. I like to dock my phone, so it's nice to be able to just slide off the bottom half of the case. I pre-ordered a Reflex case for my 4S, so I can't wait to try it out.

Thanks for posting the coupons! I just ordered a pair of 4S Defenders (Glacier and Teal/Teal) for my wife and I. She drops her 3G CONSTANTLY, which to its credit has hung tough. But she's worried about shattering the 4S. I know the current Defender would probably work, but I like the design and colors of the 4S model better.

The first couple years we had our 3G models in SwitchEasy Capsule Rebels. A decent case, but it did get loose around the edges after a few months and allowed the bezel to get scratched up and let crud in the back a bit toward the end. The silicone around the volume rocker tore as well. So I was reluctant to go with them again for the 4S, especially with the stupid bone-like styling of the hard case.

I don't see how Otterbox is saying that you need the redesigned case. There are a lot of other case manufacturers like Incipio/LifeProof and others who have already stated that their current cases will work for the iPhone 4S. If they are all wrong, then they will have a lot of angry customers demanding refunds. This is most likely just a ploy by Otterbox to force people to buy their "new cases."

This is the life proof case for the iphone 4 which their maketing that it can fit on the 4S.. same camera opening as the original.. Otterbox is lying about the compatibility issues with old iphone 4 case on a new iphone 4s phone

Proximity sensor

Just had to add my experience on this issue. I actually found out why the front hole on the new otterbox is bigger also. The new iphone 4S has a proximity sensor that is in a different position; matches where that sensor is on the white iphone 4. Which is the reason why the old defender otterbox would not work on the white iphone 4. With some modifications, plenty of sites on line with instructions, the old otterbox can supposedly work. Not sure how reliable it is. I ordered a white iphone 4s AND I want s defender case. Notice the new defender design does not exclude the white iphone as before!
I found an awesome deal on the NEW otterbox defender on AT&T. Just google "25% off on at&t accessories" and it will take you to their site and give sn automatic discount of $12.50 on the NEW otterbox defender cases and free shipping. Also, they don't say anything about having to wait till 10/14 to ship out so I'm getting them before I receive my phones which is a relief! Another benefit, they have better colors in my opinion. My daughter wanted a purple defender and they have it in new design.

The otterbox links states the case doesn't fit or not compatible the WHITE 4 or 4s iPhones.
The link in the green box takes you to the case they recommend for the white iPhone 4 and 4s.

Katy, thanks for the heads-up regarding the ATT deal. And I didn't see a purple case on the Otterbox Website, so it's nice to hear that it is available.

I am concerned whether the ATT offerings are really the new 4S design; since ATT doesn't show the back of the case it's impossible to tell. And the ATT SKU doesn't match the Otterbox model numbers. Have you received the cases yet so you can confirm?

If anyone wants to compare Otterbox to other rugged cases, take a look at http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/re...,A,A-,B+,B,B-,C+,C,C-,D+,D,D-,F+,F,F-,NR,NA"/.

The case reviews often compare features as well as the pros and cons of comparable cases, which makes narrowing-down the candidates quicker and easier.

Ottewrbox used to be the only rugged case, but now there are some competitors that are worth consideration. I've been using a Defender for over two years, but there a couple of cases that I am considering to replace it.

Chatted with apple and they said the proximity sensor is in the same place. I'm just going to order the Amazon model for $16.

The OB Defenders shown on AT&T website are the old ones. Someone posted not too long ago that the stores are carrying the new Defenders now.

No, they are in fact the new model of otterbox defenders with a bigger camera hole in back and bigger opening in front around proximity sensor, mic. It also says directly on their site that they are for the iphone 4 AND iphone 4S.

I can confirm that two of the otterbox cases, the white/black and the pink/black are in fact the new design. The purple/blue case is apparently backordered; not sure when I'll get that one but hopefully before Friday when the phone arrives. The ones that say "New" on the at&t website seem to be the new model based on what I received and the pics on the website.

PS At&t is also carrying some otterboxes of the old design but they are clearly marked for iphone 4 and if you search for cases for iphone 4S they do come up at the bottom of the list for some reason.

Almost every case company quickly threw an "S" on most of their cases. However, Otterbox isn't the only company that increased the camera cut out on their 4S cases. Given that both are available, I'm not sure why anyone would order the smaller camera opening? It is a known issue regarding the small teardrop opening causing photo issues with several of the cases. More importantly, to me, the teardrop case I had made cleaning the lens a pain, the larger opening looks much easier to clean.

Not sure about the Defender, but the Otterbox Commuter 4S case had a few other improvements to the hard plastic layer along with the larger camera openings.

I ordered the Blue Defender from Amazon for $18.15 (down from 18.25 yesterday!!!!). Should be delivered on Wednesday and phone hopefully shortly thereafter. We'll see if we can get to the bottom of this by the end of the week.

If it turns out it messes with the camera, 18 bucks lost. But if it's no issue at all, Welcome to Savings City, population 1. Worst case scenario, it'll make for a worthwhile investment even just to throw it in there for doing active things where I know I'm not taking pictures (golf, taking dogs to park for umpteenth time...)

Thinking about getting a Commuter. I think I will wait till I get the iPhone on Friday and go into Optus and test out the case, make sure that the cameras higher aperture isn't effected by the Commuter's camera opening.

Thanks for the link for the 25% off the AT&T store.

But is anyone else wondering why AT&T has color combos available that aren't available on the OtterBox Website? Like the Red and Black is nowhere on the OtterBox site.

Glad I'm not the only one who wondered that
