As a first time iPhone purchase (but also an OtterBox Defender user for my iPod Touch), I want my new 4S protected the moment I get it. Since I'm not sure if any stores around here will have the new 4S Defender tomorrow, I'm just going to buy an iPhone 4 Defender tonight. If there are any problems with the proximity sensor, etc., I'll simply return it once I'm able to find the 4S Defender.

Looking forward to reading marine0816's review!

The camera opening is different .... They point of the thread is to confirm that you can fit a iPhone 4 onto a iPhone 4S case... Otter claims you can't...

Actually, I never questioned that the 4S would technically "fit" in the OtterBox designed for the iPhone 4. I was fairly certain it would. But I also could see from the comparative pictures that the front sensor/camera arrangement and the rear camera of the 4S would be interfered with by the older case. This was true of the white iPhone 4 (they say so right on their site that the different sensor array of the white model made it incompatible). And your pics only help affirm that. So I guess it depends on what your definition of "fit" is. A 4S will physically fit in the iPhone 4 OtterBox, but function is compromised.

Eh, I dont get why someone would buy such a seksy phone and cover it up with such an ugly, bulky case. To each his own, huh?

Uh, because some of us are klutzes and a phone that's completely glass in front and back is not safe in our hands. I have an iphone 3GS that has a cracked lcd screen from dropping it several times in an iskin case; it protected the glass from breakage yes but the impact jarred the phone enough to crack the pixels underneath! Iphones are good but fragile. Never had to put a case on any cell phone i've ever owned till now!

Actually, the point of the thread was saying that the iPhone 4S won't fit/won't work in the 4 case.

IMHO - I think the phone will "fit", but the new case was designed for a reason, with the bigger camera hole. To each their own, but I don't get why people will shell out $200 + for a phone, but must save $12 on a case? I ordered the new case, which was made with the 4S in mind, and I can't wait for it to arrive. :D

Because not everybody believes in wasting money.

so I took advantage of that 25% deal on ATT. I ordered the Commuter case for iPhone 4 / 4S. Even my email confirmation states this. I just received the case today and I got the iPhone 4 Commuter case. Very mad about this.

I have my white 4S coming tomorrow. I will put this one on it anyway to see if it works.. but we'll see.

Nonetheless, pissed.

You nailed it.

I would think the case would fit, they did not redesign the external device, just internal. I will however purchase the new otterbox 4s case because the regular Otterbox 4 cases were too close to the camera. I had a pink case and it would always give a pink glare on all the corners of my pictures unless I squeezed it down extra tight. Such a pain in the butt!

Unless I'm mistaken, the volume and mute buttons on the side were relocated too on the iphone 4s compared to the iphone 4 (judging by comparison photos I've seen). I also read that if you had a case for the iphone 4 for Verizon, the case would also work with the iphone 4s because the CDMA Verizon model already had the buttons relocated in comparison with the ATT iphone 4.

My iPhone 4s is now in my old iPhone 4 otter box. Everything fits and works perfectly. Volume buttons operate as normal. Proximity sensor working. Camera/Flash all seem just fine.

For the record my iPhone 4 was black, my 4s (that I've had for an hour or so) is white.

Any chance you could take a picture with case on and case off? Other than fit, that was the only real concern. TIA

Was your iphone 4 for ATT or Verizon? As I mentioned above, I think the Verizon iphone 4 is identical exterior-wise to the iphone 4s with the relocated buttons, etc.

I'll get to test it out later today too. I have a universal iPhone 4 defender I got from Amazon for $18. I also ordered a 4s from Otterbox. If the 4 case works the 4s defender is going back.

Thanks

Thank you very much. I ordered my phone on the 7th, but still no ship date. Bummer. I have the universal iphone 4 otterbox and wanted to thank you in advance for your information.

I don't know about the Defender, but I can say, without a doubt, that the Commuter for the AT&T iPhone 4 WILL fit the 4S.

I picked up my 4S this morning and immediately bought a Commuter from AT&T, taking advantage of the 25% off deal. The case came in an AT&T-labeled package and was labeled for the iPhone 4. I put the case on the 4S right there in the store and the fit is perfect. The only difference is that the mute switch is closer to the bottom of the opening than the top (it's not located right in the middle.) But it's nowhere near the edge of the silicone and works perfectly.

Then, later this morning, I stopped by another AT&T store to see if they had another color of the Commuter. They did, so I bought it too. This one came in the traditional yellow Otterbox packaging and was also labeled for the iPhone 4. Put it on the 4S and it fits EXACTLY the same as the one I bought this morning.

Moral of the story? The AT&T-version of the Otterbox Commuter for the iPhone 4 WILL fit the iPhone 4S. CONFIRMED.

Good to hear! I have my phone coming via FedEx today and I already have a pink Otterbox Commuter waiting at home for it that I got for $20 from Amazon. It's the iPhone 4 universal case, so that should work. As long as I like the case itself on the phone, it's a keeper :)

My $16 amazon otterbox defender should be delivered any moment now.. I should be able to confirm within the hour.

I have the purple/white Otterbox defender universal case and it fits my white iPhone 4S perfectly.

Can some of you using the iphone 4 Otterbox on the iphone 4s post some pics? I'd like to see how the sides look where the volume button is.

Also do any of you notice any downside with the camera? I know the camera opening on the iphone 4s case is bigger than the one for the iphone 4.

Otterbox just came in the mail

The otterbox fits great.

I somewhat in the back of my mind wanted to believe otterbox was telling the truth but they lied and badly.

The proximity sensor in the front is centered perfectly with plenty of space on all sides. The front camera and speaker are centered perfectly as well with space.

On the back, the cutout for the camera sits on top of the crome bezel. Compare with this picture for example. In that picture you can see the chrome. On the 4S the cutout comes just up to the crome so it's not completely visible.

It does not go past the chrome, nor interfere at all with picture taking at all.

The volume buttons work fine. The top mic lines up fine.

The vibrate switch is not centered. It's towards the bottom, but does not touch. Functions as it should.

I only have my iP4S with me now as I'm at work. I'll see if I can use someones phone to take to pics to show. If not I will when I get home, but again this fits and works fine.

got my 4s and $16 amazon universal iPhone 4 otter box defender today.

10 minute impression: works fine, everything lines up so far.

the case may be a bit bulkier than i want to use forever, but for <$20 i'll gladly keep it around to drop the phone into when needed.

regarding the why do you cheap out on a case comments.

1) I own a drill.

2) a $50 case on a $200 phone is 25%. Michelins on a car are pricey too, but they aren't 25%.

The Otter box defender case I have seems to work fine. I thought I had problems with the proximity sensor at first. But I've tried it a bunch with Siri and phone calls and the sensor seems to function fine. The camera works fine. Although I haven't tried the flash yet. But it looks like the opening for the camera fits the same as the defender case on my wife's AT&T iPhone 4.

BTW I've attached the UPC of the case I'm using.
