yeah, not quite sure if you realize how beneficial syncing is or why people would do it.

also not quite sure if you're speaking like "I don't understand why people might use iCloud sync.. will you explain?"
-or-
if it's more like "I don't have a need for iCloud therefore nobody does and it's a ripoff".

if it's the former, i'll type it up.. if it's the latter then.. coolGood4U

Hmm I would say neither. It’s a ripoff for me but I can see why people use it.

iCloud (or any cloud service) syncs files between all your devices and the cloud and it backs up iOS devices to the cloud, and does all this wherever you are. An automatic WiFi sync/backup option on the other hand (if a good one existed), would do all that between devices only, no cloud, and only when devices are on the same WiFi network.

The advantages of the non cloud option are there’s no monthly fee, you don’t have to trust a company to keep your files safe, you don’t have to have internet access to get your files, you don’t have to wait to buffer or load your files, and you use less mobile data.

The disadvantages of the non cloud option are you would sync and backup only while at home (or wherever your devices are on the same trusted network), it requires you to have another offsite backup system in place, and your devices have to have large enough capacities to hold all the files you would otherwise store in the cloud.

I already have a (free) offsite backup system for my computer, so as long as all my files and iOS backups get to my computer, they will get backed up safely somewhere else; I always get the largest capacity devices (or at least for my phone which I always have with me—although current capacities are not big enough); and I’m usually ok risking losing at most one day of file changes until I get home to sync or backup. But I should also add for my really important file changes done away from home, I upload them to a free cloud service which then automatically downloads to my home computer and gets backed up there. Periodically when my free cloud storage gets full I empty it.

So for me the advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages. But I can see how iCloud would make sense for people who don’t already have a thorough offsite backup system (or who don’t have computers), or who have devices without enough storage capacity, or who make too much important file changes while out and about to fit on a free cloud service. And I’m probably missing other categories. Feel free to fill in.

But like I said, the non iCloud option doesn’t really exist. It’s not in Apple’s best interest.

People really beating the classic iPhone design of the 8 to death on here damn. Just a year ago there wasn't nearly this much hate, ppl were clamoring to get their hands on the Jet Black 7 Plus with that design, now that the calendar flipped from 9 years to 10 no one can stomach it. Crazy.
People feel the need to justify their $/£/€ 1000 purchase to themselves, as the design is the single clear improvement (face rather than Touch ID is a sidegrade at best, chip and cameras largely the same) that’s what people are playing up... personally I like the glass back refresh of the 8, though not so sure on the space grey colour and not paying 950 for the 256 storage tier. Again with the X, I like the design, notch and all, but just not paying 1150 for a phone and certainly not 1000 for a 64gb phone... happy to wait for the design to become the norm and pick one up then, but I’ve always preferred the comfier trailing edge of technology to the oft-turbulent cutting edge!

Interesting, if it were not for the OLED screen which I want to better daylight visibility, the dual image stabilized rear and higher res cameras, and what I can do with the front facing cameras I probably would stay with my 7Plus 256.

I am staying with my plus size iPhone because the screen is larger than the iPhone X. Because of the notch at the top, the design team was forced to cut off the bottom 1/2 of screen and make it unusable ("safe zone"). Try to make an edge to edge app and you will be rejected. The safe zone issue is huge and most people aren't realizing this. The new Google Pixel 2 phone at least uses the left/right 1/2 inch for stereo speakers.

thing is, the areas falling outside of the 'safe area' in those images will be occupied by things that would otherwise be shrinking the app canvas on other phones.
like, the status info goes up in the nooks.. on another iPhone, the status info encroaches upon the app canvas.. effectively shrinking the available space on a rectangular screen.
When you turn your shiny new iPhone X in landscape mode there will be no place to hide the status anymore.
Developers are going nuts in landscape mode. I sense much trouble ahead.

when you go landscape, you can (completely) hide the status if so desired..

Numbers.app for example (on 6s):

that dude in the twitter link is either trying to be funny (probably) or incompetent as a designer and shouldn't be doing that type of stuff professionally (unlikely anyway)...

assuming he knows what he's doing, i highly doubt 'going nuts' is anything close to being accurate.

seems more like a dramatic forum member at play.

Is that a global feature setting, or there only if the app developer implements it (hopefully though a simple API call)?

I agree. It is funny in any case. I do thing the "safe area" is a deal killer for me. The Google Pixel 2 uses the "dead zones" to the left and right for stereo speakers. Perfect example of Apple overselling something (like the Apple TV's ability to cut the cord)
