With last week's release of upgraded Mac Mini's, Apple's baby Mac is actually a fairly beefy machine. Other World Computing is taking that a step further by offering a 16GB RAM upgrade -- twice what Apple offers:

OWC maintains a "MaxRAM" testing lab of Apple machines and has verified that the new Mac Mini can accept up to 16 GB of RAM.

if 8gb sticks cost so much im not surprised that we don't see an 8gb option for macbook airs, imagine how much one would cost from apple o_O

Wow! That's a big jump in price from 4gb modules to 8gb modules!
 
8GB sticks are so expensive. I could really do with 16GB right now, and I'd love to have it in a MacMini, but I can't justify it at all. I suspect I'll end up with an iMac, but the problem then is having to take it to bits to install a Vertex 3 SSD. The sensible choice is to build my own computer, especially because the stuff I'll be doing that needs 16GB RAM is on Windows, but I've been totally spoiled by the incredible form factor of the iMac/Mini, and I also love that they run silent. Big box PCs aren't nearly so nice.

It would be nice if Apple put in 4 RAM slots, I like the small form factor, but sometimes they take it to too much of an extreme.

If I were you, I'd get the Apple CTO model with the HD+SSD, then add 16GB of RAM from OWC or another reputable dealer. The problem with your hack is that you're voiding the warranty, one of the benefits of buying a Mac. Alternately, if you really want that level of customization, you're a better candidate for the Mac Pro. The only problem there is that Intel hasn't released Sandy Bridge Xeon chips, so there's no Sandy Bridge Mac Pro yet.

You could be right about the MacPro -- I could be tempted by a 6 or 8 core refurb from the current generation once the refresh has happened. The main problem with a Pro is moving it around - as I work on different projects/for different people, I often take my own equipment.

FWIW, I've heard mixed messages about whether or not swapping the disk really invalidates an iMac's warranty. The thinking is that disks need to be user-servicable because they do fail, and so long as you take care, your warranty should be fine. I would try an get official confirmation before I went ahead, mind...

If they did, the extra slots would have to be on the other side of the motherboard, so it'd be a pain to upgrade. It'd still be great though. I'm guessing there is room, now that the optical drive has gone.

What's the point in having so much RAM in a simple desktop that's not meant to be doing a whole lot of work. The whole point is to save money with the Mini--honestly, the 2.4GHz 2GB model ran Photoshop CS3 just fine for me when I was working with 90mb files. :confused:

The Mini uses laptop memory (SO-DIMMs). OWC's price isn't that far off what it would cost you from Amazon or Newegg, and OWC is promising that it will work.
 
What a complete and utter rip-off. How can they justify such a price. No thanks! Come back with £100 per stick and you have a deal, that's just blatant overcharging and I get great performance with 8GB thanks.

I understand there's development costs, marketing, and manufacturing, but c'mon really that much? You guys need your head seeing to.
 
It wasn't too long ago that 4GB OWC RAM for a MBP or mini was $375.00. I remember thinking at the time that if it every gets to $300 I'm in. By the time it did hit $300 I decided to wait until $250!

At $109 I finally put 8GB in the MPB. I still haven't upgraded the mini yet. It's running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit so now that 8GB is less than $80 I'm finally going to have to give in. (why I don't know)

I paid slightly over $400 for 12GB (3 x 4GB) for the MP last fall. That same RAM now is less than a couple hundred bucks. It won't be too long before the laptop/iMac/mini 8GB sticks and the MP 16GB sticks get down to the "let's get some" range.
