These guys are fast. Well done.
Too fast if you ask me. It’s like they were aware of the issue before the HomePod was released, maybe directly by the “source” if you know what I mean. Can’t wait for them to also pop up at your nearest Apple Store.

I for one am very curious to know what exactly is causing the white ring. Is it the paint on the HomePod or some sort of chemical reaction? I have yet to read anything about the cause. Anyone know?

By "source", do you mean aware of chemical reactions? Silicone reacting to certain oils is not exclusive to Apple, nor any newly discovered revelation. I'm amazed how big of a deal people are making of this. Or maybe you were being sarcastic. If that's the case, my bad.

Nobody has coasters lying around?

is this real life?

Is this just fantasy?

Seriously?

What do you think is more likely - a grand conspiracy, or that Pad & Quill - a maker of leather accessories - already had a stack of branded drinks coasters for promotional give-aways?

Even without that bit of good luck, if you've got access to leather offcuts with your logo stamped on them (because you design leather goods), a computer-controlled cutter (because you design leather goods) and a heavy-duty sewing-machine (because... you get the drift) it ain't gonna take 24 hours to knock one of these up, stick an order form on the website and send an order to your factory for 1000 of these by Friday... and all of that specialist equipment can be worked around: the only essential bit of kit that prevents more of us from playing this game is something called a Brass neck.

The most impressive thing about this is that they managed to pull it off so close to Chinese New Year when many of the tat mills are apologising for their inability to offer their usual 3-working-day turn around. Still - we'll see when these actually start shipping (I trust MacRumors will bring us the unboxing and teardown reports?)

This is why Apple is so important to the global economy. No matter whether they fart, barf, or pass out on the sidewalk, thousands of scavenger jobs will instantly be created.

So instead of a white ring, I can get a solid white circle from the leather coaster?

I have some cases from Pad & Quill and they're definitely high-quality. P&Q did a quick turnaround on these and while it's not April Fools, it's certainly offered in jest (but they will absolutely sell them to you and if you choose to spend $20 on them that's your prerogative). Just taking advantage of a first-world issue.

As an aside though, if you happen to have any of these around, you could recycle.

Why do they have to be made from a piece of a dead animal?

Would you prefer a piece of a live animal?

This is what makes it all worthwhile:

Having so many people working on useless stuff does not improve the economy in the long term.

Cause it's less wasteful. If you're going to be a meat eater in the first place, then why wastefully throw away the skins into landfill.
Like a good cook/chef when he/she buys raw ingredients, makes as many dishes as they can from this limited resource that took time to grow.

...being a vegetarian, or trying to at least cut down on ones (red) meat consumption, is obviously a better starting point. But wasting materials to save the planet is ironically actually doing the exact opposite. :-\

That's a good view point and I certainly wouldn't argue against it. But I guess my argument comes from the standpoint of a, why would anyone think that wearing a dead animal is luxurious and b, maybe if we took all the money invested in propping up the meat industry and instead poured it into companies like Memphis Meats, Impossible, etc, people and the environment would be hella healthier.
