I've been keeping track of the thread over at Apple support forums and the consensus is software problem I believe.

That's good because for a while it was confusing as hell.. Kept reading all of these people that are exchanging their devices..

Still makes since because people who exchange their phones are essentially doing a round about DFU restore.

Yeah, I'm having some weird issues with wifi and cellular (showing I have no bars when I actually have service, etc.) Resetting network settings works for about a day and then it goes back. Definitely something buggy going on with iOS 6. I think I'm going to hold on to my phone because it does not have any cosmetic or screen problems and wait for 6.0.1. Hopefully they'll iron it out soon.

Infuriating is right! I can't decide to raise a stink at the Apple store again and push for the replacement phone or upgrade to a router that works better (or do both). If it is a software issue manifested by signal magnitude, then I want a good strong-signalled router. Please share some recommendations. The D-Link DIR-655 I use it like 6 years old now and isn't a very strong signal where I need it most in the house anyway.
All evidence points to a hardware/software interoperability issue. Wifi reception may never be as good as the iPhone 4S in certain situations, but Apple should be able to eliminate the vast majority of the issues in this thread (dropouts, packet loss, etc.) with a software update, and provide superior Wifi performance for most with 5GHz Wifi networks.

I initially tried both the Dlink DIR-655 and Verizon-provided Actiontec MI-424WR (Rev.I) FiOS router with the iPhone 5 and my Wifi results were sporadic in the 5-25Mbps range, while my iPhone 4S consistently provides 30-35Mbps. I found that I could get more consistent results with the iPhone 5 when using other Speedtest.net locations outside my immediate area, but throughput was still well below my 4S.

I swapped out these routers with the widely recommended Asus RT-N66U wireless router. This router provides separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless networks for different devices. Here's my iPhone5 Speedtest.net result to the NY Speedtest.net server using the new router in the 5GHz band.

No question, the stronger 5GHz signal from the Asus router produces significantly improved throughput, more than double the throughput of the 4S.

I'm in the same boat. I'm not willing to let go of my device;as it's mint, and i'm worried i'll get a device full of cosmetic issues...

I was getting GREAT speeds this morning, so i'm not gonna worry about it any more. I will be even happier once we get an initial "6.0.1" update though

Thank you for mentioning that Asus router. And the fact you tested with the same piece of shiz DIR-655 I currently own seals the deal for me. I'm getting the Asus because I want a stronger wifi router anyway and at least in the current iOS version it will give me a leg up on the issue til 6.0.1 or whatever improves the signal fickleness in the iPhone 5.

Ive managed to get mine working at present, configuring my 2nd router on my home network with WPA only, not WPA2. Seems to be holding up so far.

Why should we be having to go through this though? Its a complete joke to be honest.

sweet..
Edit: now that wifi is blasting again ... my God whatta Phone :D

I'm having WiFi issues on my Verizon iP5.

Speedtest with network off and only WiFi on is on my phone: 8.22Mb/s down 3.00Mb/s up & 91ping

Same Speedtest on my laptop is around 23.57 Mb/s down 2.75 Mb/s up & 26 ping

try a network reset, and stay off wifi for 20min.. I called :apple: and was told to do so... did the job for me (so far 4hours in)

The WiFi on my iPhone works flawlessly at home using my Belkin N600 router. When I go to my parents' house and connect to their Belkin N600 router -- same firmware, etc. -- it is painfully slow regardless of authentication method or no authentication at all.

When I restarted the phone while there, it connects and the WiFi is fast and it still works fast at home.

When I went back there after a week, the WiFi is painfully slow again. If I restart the phone, it connects and is fast again.

It seems very softwarey, at least for me.

Router issue ? Non Apple Router or Apple Router ?

Are any of you guys using the New AirportExpress router, and having the same issues with WiFi ? Or using the Airport Extreme ?

At my office I have an Airport extreme, dual band.
At home I have a Time Capsule, dual band.

Both are the newer models.

Both of our iP5's are plagued with this slow wifi issue,

Slow wifi was one of the first things I noticed when I brought my new iPhone home, but things seem to have gotten better since then. I have noticed though that there are times when I come home and the phone won't even pick up on the wifi. The only way to get it to connect is to reboot the phone.

Mine was inconsistent since receiving my 5 yesterday, I'd chalked it up to being at my weekend home which doesn't have the best Internet, but I did the google DNS trick this morning (8.8.8.8) instead of the DHCP'd DNS and it cleared my flaky wifi up. Just my $0.02, YMMV.

Since I got this phone my wifi performance around the house has dropped noticeably.
I put my old 3Gs (IP .192), my wifes 4G (.195) and the new 5 (.120) all side by side and looked at the signal strength on the Dlink, the 5 remained much lower than the other two but also often dropped way down in comparison.

UPDATE: Despite my best attempts at a DFU restore and set up as a new phone the issue has returned.

I'll be as specific as I can be regarding my findings thus far. The issue revolves around the download speed only. Across all of my devices upload speeds remain consistant. Another point of interest is while conducting a speed test the test would stall to a complete stop while running, but the app itself has not crashed. You can tell this because the GUI of the speed test is still active. This factor was not present on devices with sufficient speeds. Because I did a DFU restore and set up as new, and because all of my devices run iOS 6, it is safe to assume that this is hardware related. The devices I tested with was a GSM iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, and iPad 3.

I'm currently on my way to my local Apple store to explain my findings which would surely result in a replacement phone. My only issue is that now I have to gamble with scuff gate, yellow screens, bubble screens, or the same wifi issue with the new phone.

The phone being returned is week 36 September. And for those of you trying to fix it through settings on your router I have to ask what is the point? That is a bandaid solution and the problem still exists. There is nothing wrong with your routers.

I am also having the slow WIFI issues.

Some have said its DNS, Ive tried multiple different DNS with no luck. I am on a Time Capsule dual band. Ive tried both bands, with and without security. No luck. I sit at around .5mb down...

Same here. When I find my iPhone 5 being slow on wifi I have to hard reboot it. Then it will run for a while crazy fast. I think its a software problem as it relates to the iphone 5 hardware. I am not going to bother to exchange the phone as its great otherwise. I think I will wait to see if Apple can work this out.

Thanks tigres. Was thinking of getting the Airport extreme, but now, I'll hold off to see if this is a software issue or not. ;)

So I have no problems with wifi speeds but my iPhone once it goes to sleep and I turn it back on, it doesn't automatically connect. I have to manually go to settings wifi and type the password every single time, is this a problem with ios? or do I need to replace my phone?

I couldn't connect to my home wifi ever since last Friday so a solution, I bought a new wireless router and now it works. I've done my old router for about seven years and it was time for an update, I guess.

FWIW, I called AppleCare this morning and after being transferred one level "up" I was told they do acknowledge the issue and are working on a fix. Then she suggested I manually enter the network info under the "Other" option under WiFi.

Even though the phone may already recognize the network, click "other" and enter the info, rather than just clicking the network name.
This has worked for me since about 11 am, so almost 10 hours. Prior to this I have had to use an unsecured guest network, not my WPA2, in order to use WiFi.

I also reset network settings and let it alone for 20 mins, as posted earlier. Figured it couldn't hurt.

It sometimes still takes a few seconds to begin loading a page, but once it's going it flies.

Not working anymore. Bummer.
