I recall Steve at MWSF07 saying "..and Boy,have we patented that" or something similar, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't referring to the iPhone itself, it's not like they don't do the same for iPods. I think it's the way multi-touch has been implemented in the UI and such.

I think they have an application for the implementation, but it's for a specific algorithm. Like most such patents, it's easy to get around by doing something slightly differently. So when he said "boy have we patented it", that was mostly fodder for his fans. He is a very good salesman.

Here's a list of all granted Apple touch patents.

They also have a bunch of design patents... which protect the look of the cases, etc.

I don't know about you but I can do this on my iPhone.

Only if someone includes the http://

I'm definitly getting one after it's been tested on Sprint. Then I'll pick up one unlocked for GSM. Not hacked like the iPhone mind you - actually going to palm.com and picking one up. They said that's coming 2nd half of 09.

I'm glad Sprint users get to test the phone for me first though. And hopefully we won't get another buggy storm on our hands.

I'm excited.

And rumor is that it'll be pretty darn expensive, even subsidized from Sprint. Seems to me that this thing is going to be dead in the water.

A touchscreen smartphone!

What will the industry think of next?!

Honestly, I had one of the first Palm Smartphones from Kyrocera way back and loved it.

Actually, compared to the Newton, Palm was a lot better.

Alas, I think Palm is a worthy competitor - to the Android G1... :)

I like the UI - clean and simple like Palm has always been.

Keep on going!

One question and one comment. First the question- what type of multitouch is that? Because the capacitance touchscreen multitouch I thought was patented by Apple, especially where you could zoom in and out by pinching like that. Is this a resistant touchscreen with multitouch?

Then the comment- from the videos the accelerometer takes a good long while to register when you tilt the phone. Pretty laggy on that.
It's capacitive. Don't know about that patent stuff. Maybe Palm decided to risk a lawsuit, maybe they found a way around it or maybe Apple's patents don't actually restrict another company from soming up with something similar and Palm was the first to call their bluff. Engadget or Gizmodo should have the answer on that. Maybe we should email their editors and tell them to ask Palm/ Apple?

And as for the response time, seems pretty on par with the iPhone to me. Engadget and other tech sites reported the same as well.

For what it's worth, Palm's stock price has literally doubled since they announced this thing yesterday, and that's during two down sessions in the market.

The reviews from nearly all media outlets have been incredibly upbeat.

And the key here isn't so much the Pre, but the OS behind it that Palm is planning to build their future around... it's not a question of iPhone vs Pre vs G1, it's a question of Mac OS X vs WebOS vs Android.

(And I think it's too early to declare a winner there, since the last two are in their infant stages.)

If you're looking for the most "features", the iPhone is not for you

We haven't even gotten to the vastly improved beastly UI interface, cross app integration (Super Search, Im+SMS etc), Off screen gesturing to prevent obscuring what you loking at while swiping, wireless charger, removable battery, microSD, physical volume control button, etc. It's basically EVERYTHING that the iPhone does, what jailbreaking adds, the wishlist that people wished it had in the first place, open source from Google's Android, and improvements people never thought of (like Page Cards).

I think it's nice for Palm to finally develop something worth talking about even if they had to copy a bunch of Apple's ideas to do it. There are some things I like about the Palm Pre, however, I think that overall I prefer the simplicity of the iPhone. Every month you're going to have new phones coming out that "do everything"; however if I had to suggest a phone for my wife or mother (who aren't technogeeks) I would suggest an iPhone. It strikes a nice balance between beauty, power, and simplicity. That doesn't mean that I don't want Apple to add some more cool features...however I do put my trust in Apple to make the phone better while not mucking up the interface and overcomplicating things.

It'll come in at $199 with subsidy. I think Sprint data is sort of expensive? So it'll be more TCO during the contract.

Sprint has the cheapest voice/data plans on the US market. Due to this, it was a very tough decision to switch from them 3 months ago, but I did it for the iPhone. I don't quite understand the Sprint bashing going on in these Palm Pre thread. Half of these complainers probably never even had Sprint. I was on Sprint for 7+ years and never really had a problem. And their network is probably better than AT&T's. I rarely ever had a dropped call or encountered dead spots.

I have At&t and pay $70 for unlim data and 450 min
Sprint $70 for 450 min, unlim data, unlim sms, mms. hows that expensive.

Easy now - it was a question, not a statement...

This would lead me to believe that may Palm would re-introduce their Palm Pilots which would be a phoneless-Pre to compete with the iPod Touch?

Word is that it'll be 400 dollars off the bat regardless.

Maybe $199... with a THREE year contract...

That would be very bad. On Sprint, a price tag above $200 will be prohibitive, not the cost of the contract. This is probably why the Instinct (which is a pretty crappy device) set Sprint sales records and the HTC Touch Pro has not.

I also was with sprint and moved for the iphone. No problems with sprint. If this phone does all that i want I may switch back. My used iphone is easily worth 450 dollars on ebay. Wont cost me to switch.

What are you talking about? Overcomplicate things? By allowing multitasking and other basic features that the iPhone should have had from the start they are overcompicating things? Yeah sure if you gimp something that won't make it overcomplicated... smh.

If anything Apple should be proud that another company actually "gets" user friendly design to the point where it one-upped the master. That Page Card thing is genius. Even if Apple came out with multitasking, I doubt they thought THAT far ahead.

Google is probably gritting its teeth though more than Apple, cause I KNOW they feel like Palm stole their thunder... lol. Let all 3 compete and make the Blackberry/ Razr/ Sidekick sheep look like TRASH.

this is all we know:

Peter Kafka on the Pre:

The biggest unknown is price, which went unmentioned during the demo. My assumption is that Palm would try to take market share by coming in significantly lower than the $200 or so Apple wants for its iPhone. But when I ran that theory by Palm CEO Ed Colligan, he looked at me liked I’d peed on his rug. “Why would we do that when we have a significantly better product,” he asked, then walked away.

Translation: Bargain hunters are going to be disappointed.

LOL...

Okay, Steve Ballmer is going to have to b**** slap that guy...

I'm not. Plus look at the 00:50 time mark, it looks like the guy is having trouble bringing up the menu.

I will not doubt the iPhone ever again. Now repeat after me :)

remember they have 6 months to fix the bugs. at the iphone macworld jobs was switching between 3 different iphones because the battery power was not quite fixed yet. a lot can happen in six months. i'm not saying that it's guaranteed to be a world beater but they're off to a heck of a start

I think the OP meant, it would shame other handset manufacturers, and potentially Apple as well, due what Pre is and what it can do.

It looks and feels like what a Rev B iPhone should be. Keyboard, A2DP. Better enhancements on the OS beyond multitouch. Yeah, Apple try to "flick up" to close the app, I hate that single BUTTON on the iPhone. I thought the screen was a single button!:apple::mad:

Just another iPhone wanna-be IMO. They keep coming up with all these new devices that are supposed to be a better iPhone, but it never happens. I just bought my wife a new iPhone (3rd iPhone I've purchased). Before buying I checked out all the competition and nothing still comes close to the iPhone for ease of use (and in my wife's case that's very important ;)).

i think the biggest problem with the phone is the same problem microsoft has with their phones - their taking a desktop approach to the UI. in fact this phone is taking a mac os approach. these are phones with tiny screens not computers with big screens. i think all the swiping will be confusing to most consumers. iphone's biggest asset is its ease of use. my 3 year old niece figured out on her own how to swipe to see the next picture in a photo album. without a user namual you will never figure out how to use this phone. the one thing i did like was spotlite - iphone needs to incorporate that.
