Let them have their day in the sun. Here what stinks about it:
1) No simultaneous data and voice.
2) No visual voicemail.
3) No onscreen ability to type, especially in landscape mode on web pages- have to keep flipping it up and down to get the hard keyboard.
4) Can't download music over 3G- Sprint won't allow it. Only over WIFI.
5) Can't download podcasts at all. The only way to get is via computer.
6) 8 gig storage max
7) Can't talk on it while charging via USB connection.
8) Smaller screen.
9) Cheapo, tiny keyboard
10) Few apps yet available
11) The battery life is horrible- much worse than iPhone. It sounds like it may be due to the multi-tasking which is why Apple says it has not done it.
12) The screen is plastic, not glass- how long do you think that will last?

One more peeve- the ads for Sprint seem to imply, but not state, it is made for their 4G network. False. The Pre can't even handle 4G at all.

if #7 is true that really sucks and does not make much sense to me...

And I don't even know why people still talk about multitasking. WMo had it for years (or, is it almost a decade now?)

And WMo actually has thousands (if not 10's of thousands) of apps.

after seeing some videos and what not i think the Pre is a little over rated. It is a great phone no doubt, but apps do launch a tad bit slow and i can understand apples approach of apps launching instantly to "mimic" multitasking even though it obviously isn't.. and it just hit me a couple days back that typing in web addresses would be a pain if the user wanted to view in horizontal mode..

I don't think Palm needs to worry about that...they just need to sell units, make money, and keep producing products. WebOS looks very promising, but I doubt I'll get it on the Pre because currently its only CMDA. And even when they start selling unlocked, it will be pricey(I assume)

The rumored Eos looks interesting(and cheaper)

Why don't they need to worry about it, weren't they the same people saying all the original iphone owners will be using a Pre by now? You don't think they are worried about their competition. They also need so sell enough units or they are gone under.

I think the competition is great. I can't wait for both to step up their game to offer compelling advances in each camp. One specific thing that I hope improves soon is MobileMe. I see the Pre's cloud syncing as more where I wish MobileMe was, and I hope Apple responds.

I read somewhere that the mentioned on the news that its the first phone to multitask.

1) Yep

2) Yep - same as any other phone thus far though

3) Software keyboard is matter of preference

4) Neither could you with mobile iTunes for a year. It's a rip off anyways. I saw an interesting MS Zune add recently which said it would cost you $30,000 to fill up an iPod with music. I wonder how many people have their iPods/iPhone full and paid that kind of money (ugh... 0).

5) So?

6) Yep

7) Strange

8) Screen is the same resolution and slightly smaller

9) Viewable screen space is actually larger while using the keyboard. Of course, concensus of the hands-on reviews say the keyboard is good, not great.

10) For now

11) Just plain false. And no, it has nothing to do with the multitasking.

12) We'll see

I went to my local sprint store just to check the Pre out this morning, and it is one badass phone. The thing that amazes me the most is the card environment, it makes multitasking so simple and the gestures are amazing. The phone is very speedy bringing up web pages and I like how the pages update even when when you're not using them. The only thing i'm concerned about is the appstore, it doesn't compete with the iPhone's, but it's not terrible. As far as hardware it way sexier then my iPhone, except for the keyboard, that will take some getting used to. Im still not sure if I will purchase one, I'm going to wait and see what Apple does monday. I really want the Pre, because I think it is better, but im such an apple fanboy, I don't think I will be able to part with a possible new iPhone. There is also the fact that I would have to pay an ETF. Overall it is a great phone and if you haven't tried it out you seriously need to:D

i played with the pre today and was not impressed. it felt cheep - the keyboard is HORRIBLE. the scrolling is jerky - not smooth like the iphone - i think they took the gestures way too far - the average consumer is going to be very confused - (do i swipe the screen or the bottom left swipe right swipe - up or down...) i think its too easy to do the wrong swipe and screw up what your looking for. screen seems too small - i don't think the cards are that impressive its more like having two quick launch bars. i rarely need more than one app open at a time - if apple gives us background IM and music streaming like pandora - that would probably be enough for me. with a faster processor and more system memory i think apps will open quicker on the new iphone and you won't notice at all that their not running in the background. i don't like their version of springboard - you can swipe up and down for more apps as well as right and left loosing track of where an app is even easier on the pre. cut and paste is a royal pain in the ass - you have to press that tiny little orange button and then you can cut - too much work for something that should be simple.

what i love about it is how integrated everything is - like buying something on fandango updates your calendar - searching is cool - but it sounds like apple has taken universal search even further (everything on the iphone will be searchable as well as email on the server - you can't even search emails on the pre). you can press the top of the screen and the wi-fi on/off switch pops up - nice touch)

after playing with it i felt my current iphone was a better devise - and come monday -- woo hooo!!!!!!!

1) Yep

2) Yep - same as any other phone thus far though- HOW SO? IPHONE HAS IT.

3) Software keyboard is matter of preference- AGREED. BUT TRY FLIPPING THE PRE SIDEWAYS (LIKE TYPING A WEB LINK) AND USING USE HARD KEYBOARD- YOU CAN'T DO IT.

4) Neither could you with mobile iTunes for a year. It's a rip off anyways. I saw an interesting MS Zune add recently which said it would cost you $30,000 to fill up an iPod with music. I wonder how many people have their iPods/iPhone full and paid that kind of money (ugh... 0)- AGREE. BUT THIS IS NOT 3 YEARS AGO. THIS IS NOW. PALM HAS TO COMPETE AGAINST THE NOW.

5) So?- MAYBE NOT TO YOU, BUT I LISTEN TO A LARGE NUMBER OF PODCASTS FOR WORKING OUT, TRAVELING, ETC., SO AT LEAST TO ME THIS IS A BIG DEAL.

6) Yep

7) Strange- IT IS A BUMMER. ON THE OTHER HAND, THEY HAVE A WIRELESS CHARGING DEVICE WHICH CAN ANSWER ON SPEAKERPHONE WHILE CHARGING.

8) Screen is the same resolution and slightly smaller

10) For now- AGREED.

11) Just plain false. And no, it has nothing to do with the multitasking- I RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE. MOST MAJOR REVIEWS HAVE SAID THE SAME THING- BATTERY LIFE IS HORRIBLE. APPLE, AND MAYBE THEY ARE LYING, CITED STATISTICS RECENTLY ABOUT HOW MUCH MULTI-TASKING CUTS BATTERY LIFE AND SAID THIS WAS A MAJOR REASON THEY OPTED AGAINST IT. MAYBE PALM CAN FIX THIS IN THE FUTURE WITH BETTER POWER MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE.

12) We'll see

YES, I HAVE USED THE PRE PERSONALLY, FOR ALMOST A WHOLE DAY EARLIER THIS WEEK FROM A FRIEND WHO HAD A REVIEW UNIT. I REALLY CAME CLOSE TO BUYING ONE TODAY, BUT AM HOLDING OFF. I LOVE THE IPHONE, BUT ADMITTEDLY AM AN ADDICTED EARLY ADOPTER, SO DESPITE THE BAD THINGS HERE I WILL PROBABLY SUCCUMB ANYWAY.

FINALLY, SORRY TO DO IN CAPS- NOT YELLING- JUST DOING SO I COULD ANSWER EACH POINT. I CERTAINLY RESPECT YOUR OPINION.

Ok, I take back what I said about the pre :p

I tried one today and it completely SUCKED. Laggy, crashes, cramped keyboard, etc. I will be getting the new 3G now.

Which Palm based on the Newton.

People looking for an enhancement of the Newton UI certainly did not find it in the Palm Pilot, except mostly for generic GUI concepts which predated both. Graffiti was an add-on to the Newton developed by Palm (because Apple's own handwriting recognition method was the subject of jokes).

I carry (and develop apps for) the iPhone; but I still think that for basic PIM functionality my old Palm handheld provided a better experience for that particular usage.

For #12, I used to have a iPod Nano (3GEN) with a plastic screen, made the mistake of going without a screen protector. Within weeks, I had scratches all over the screen. Hopefully the Pre is made of better plastic if not a screen protector must be placed, which really spoils the looks of the phone. Glass is great although I still use a screen protector on my iPhone (Matte - for less fingerprints), but although I don't use one on my iPod Touch, there has so far been no scratches (I treat it like hell).

Love the half baked copy and paste feature that Palm Pre has and was pointing their fingers on the iPhone. Looks like Apple did the right thing by taking their time and implementing copy and paste on a touchscreen device the right and elegant way.

There was no logistical reason for Apple to wait so long for cut, copy & paste. There were mock ups of how it should be implemented (many showed the EXACT way Apple ended up doing it) weeks before the phone came out.

I agree.

Why doesn't apple implement cloud storage for your itunes music?
I think that will enhance the overall aspect of mobileme.

FINGERS CROSSED FOR SOME KIND OF UPDATE TO MOBILEME ON MONDAY.

With apple planning a billion dollar data farm in N.C i can only imagine the awesome projects ahead.
