For many users, yes. I know many people with complicated phones that don't even know what a folder or file is. How do you expect they find their music files then find where to drag them to?

Now, that is surely not Apple's problem. All Palm and other device manufacturers have to do (as RIM does) is to create their own app or license an exiting app to sync with iTunes library file. That's what device manufacturers have to do if they want to give their users the option to sync with iTunes. Any direct hack into iTunes to safe cost without proper permission from Apple is illegal.

Palm is NOT going to shoot themselves in the foot. Palm must have a good case otherwise they wouldn't be this persistent.

They aren't trying to make a statement. Who makes a statement with billions at risk? Come on people lets think realistically here.

No amount of "sympathy" is worth billions and losing a 17 year old company.

1 Ok, like Paystar?

2 We are in reality.

3 Sure it is, if there is nothing left to fall back on. This is certainly true with Palm.

I see an encrypted protocol coming. The Firmware update will detect a Pre. A box will then appear " This device is not an authorized product. Update at your own risk."

You choose, you loose. Can't blame Tim for protecting intellectual property.:apple:

Apple doesn't necessarily have the responsibility to fully support non-Apple devices but it shouldn't prevent syncing either.
Apple has no problem with RIM and Nokia's software to sync with iTunes content. Palm can simply do the same thing instead of this cheap workaround.

psystar and palm are on completely different levels. palm hardly just SET UP shop.

yes psystar which released products in 2008 doesnt have much to lose.

again a company that has been around this long is not going to WILLINGLY throw money away. they are capitalists/business peope for a reason. they know what they're doing.

My usage of Pystar was established to show that companies do stupid things even when they know they are going to get sued. And Palm is desperate for a hit, their stock price is really tiny. They may see that they don't have much to loose

why are we comparing a mom and pop "company" in its infancy to a billion+ company that pioneered the PDA in the 90s?

In my book worthless argument. The playlist are not saved and that is a huge thing that people are going to want to be saved when syncing up with another device. So drag and drop is worthless.

Any system that can only read the libary is worthless unless it can sync up the playlist.
So? You want a feature. That's your problem, not Apple being "anti competitive" like everybody is claiming. I want my PS3 to play Halo 3, but I can't. Is Microsoft being "anti-competitive" for making Halo 3 not playable on the PS3?

Software like Songbird is an excellent jukebox on its own, with its own capability of making playlists and smart playlists. Apple is not stopping Pre users to switch from iTunes to other jukebox solutions.

You're just pulling straws now. If users don't know how to do stuff on the Pre, then that's Palm's problem, not Apple's.

Palm may have been a multi-billion dollar pioneering company, but they aren't anymore. Now they are a company desperate for a successful product. It doesn't matter what they were, it matters what they are.

maybe its good you don't run a corporation then, wanting to jump ship as soon as times get hard

what they were shapes what they are today. they will not throw away all of the success and hard work of 17 years over a pithy itunes syncing capabiltiy. no one buys the pre simply because they sync with itunes.

palm is not throwing away everything for a "feature" on one of their phones.

geez people.

This is what sucks about America and business!

As a Pre owner I just don't care. The only time I used iTunes is when I owned an iPhone. Frankly, there are way better apps out there meant for syncing media. I know 5 people who use the Pre at work alone and none of them sync with iTunes. This really isn't that big of a deal.

On another note, Apple really needs to be careful how they handle this situation. It won't take much for the DOJ to look at Apple's iTunes/iPod as being a monopoly. They are by far the most dominate force in the multi-billion dollar industry that is online music. Considering the anti-business Democratic control in DC it will not take much. Obama's new appointee to the DOJ's antitrust division is already targeting Google as a possible monopoly, and they haven't really pulled anything "evil".

Innovations such as google and apple should be embraced and protected not hindered by stupid government oversights. The American dream doesn't exist anymore. If you come out with a great product, make tons of money, constantly reinvent yourself to stay on top of the competition you are automatically looked at as monopolizing the industry, and that is just not right!
Just look at how apple came about. They started off small in a garage. The next big thing is out there just waiting to happen. The problem isn't apple trying to protect its product, the problem is no one else is clever enough to come out with a better product.

I'm glad so many people here don't care about ownership rights. Now I know who will gladly allow me to make forged keys and take their cars for a spin whenever I feel like it. Or, does private property ownership and copyrights only apply at a line that YOU decide it does?

ETA: By the way, as long as Palm doesn't push this too far, this is really a good marketing move. They will get tons of free press and score brownie points with all the economic illiterates as well as the "I hate Apple" crowd, which unfortunately is a large group, especially among PC users.

Where did I say or imply that? All I said is what the tech pundits are saying - Palm needs a hail Mary with the Pre. I am not precluding them to doing something stupid. You are taking my words far too seriously. Anything is possible. I hope Palm successes in business. I have never said that they should be bankrupt. All I am saying is that Palm is in a desperate situation. A quick look at their stock shows that while it is going up (I have seen it as low as just over a dollar a share), it hasn't had a quarterly profit since '07 and their stock prices are expected to loose value. Everything that I have read doesn't make for a rosy future.

im glad you're so pissed about it. but seriously though. i hope this whole thing isnt ruining your day. are you able to sleep at night even? :D

Taken from Daring Fireball . . . I didn't even know Palm actually did this:

Dieter Bohn:

The Pre is now telling your computer that the vendor who made it is Apple. The change here is that with previous versions of webOS, the Vendor ID was “0 × 0830 (Palm Inc.).” So while previously the Pre identified itself as a “mass storage device” called an iPod, now it’s identifying itself as a “mass storage device manufactured by Apple” called an iPod.

This is a direct violation of the USB licensing agreement. But, in what can only be described as true chutzpah, Palm has preemptively filed a complaint against Apple to the USB Implementors Forum, accusing Apple of misusing the USB Vendor ID.

Un-effing-believable!

I wonder just how low Palm will sink.

oh wow..grand theft auto vs. putting mp3s on a music player? TOTALLY the same thing, someone CALL the cops please

Apparently what they are is no longer a shell of what they were. If pal is as an innovative of a copamy as I remember, then they wouldn't need to resort to these cheep shots to get sync working.

And people do buy the pre thinking that it will work with iTunes. Palm advertises it as a feature!

Even if they restored the capability, who is going to want to sync that way knowing any day it could be (and likely will be) pulled again? If Palm is too lazy to develop their own software, they should at least not be advertising iTunes as a solution, just recommend Double Twist or something. They're just making themselves look bad by pimping iTunes and leaving their customers (many of whom may not be savvy enough to hunt down another solution) hung out to dry.

if thats your thought process no one should jailbreak their phones either because a new software update will come out and then you will have to find another solution all over again :(

I for one think Apple should be endorsing the idea of the ability to sync with non apple devices.. sure they lose out on some hardware sales but the gains in music purchases etc should out weigh the losses

According to the Palm supporters, its allright to do this because they're sticking it to the man.
