why does it make you guys so mad that it can sync w/ itunes? Whats wrong with sharing the joys of itunes with all platforms

I used to have respect for Palm, but not anymore.

They're sad and pathetic, and will never be a serious competitor in the smartphone arena again.

Making their phone sync with iTunes makes you lose respect for them? I love iTunes and Apple but my respect for them is lower than it could be because of their "keep your dirty little hands off" attitude towards third parties. The Pre syncing with iTunes does nothing to compromise the security or stability of iTunes.

its not that its the fact that palm deliberately hacked into another companies software and then sold the device to the public by advertising its ability to sync seamlessly with iTunes. i mean come on palm knew what they were getting into...

Not sure why everyone is defending Apple here

Seriously though, if you bought music and own the rights to it, you should be allowed to put it on whatever f'in device you want...an iphone, ipod, mp3 player, cd, dvd, or a Palm Pre...

I prefer to put mine on an iphone, but I have no problem with people putting it on a Pre.

Seriously, let's not be complete fan boys here...

Palm users can still put all the songs they want on their Pre, they simply can't use iTunes to sync them. Palm can write their own software to access all the songs on the iTunes Music library and sync them, they're just lazy...

agreed..... i mean they were able to create this ((Cough)) ((Cough)) "revolutionary" web OS why can't they create the same thing with software on the comp.

How was Microsoft violating antitrust laws by putting a web browser, something that is free anyway, into Windows? It's Microsoft's property, they can do as they please.

Question;
How was Microsoft violating antitrust laws by putting a web browser, something that is free anyway, into Windows?

Answer;
Microsoft Bundled internet explorer into the Operating system without an option to remove it, and then as such the LawSuit.

Apple's iTunes is a "Not Bundled", You must download it yourself. The Software again is Not Bundled with Microsoft's OS.

Now, Apple Bundle's it with the OSX, but you also have the Choice to Uninstall it if you so wish, Microsoft gave users no choice to uninstall IE, It was built into the OS.

Others have argued that HP has bundled iTunes with it's Microsoft XP configured Laptop's, And they have, But the difference there is HP had a contract with Apple to Bundle iTunes at the time "Due to the HP Labeled iPod".

This Argument is Old, The Question is, What is Apple going to do about it?

Palm is picking a fight on purpose, this is why I have lost respect.

Palm isn't trying to compete on the merits of their platform, they are trying to drag Apple into a street fight over something pretty silly.

They can sync with supported methods if they would just write their own software. The same methods by which Blackberry and Symbian have sync'd for a long time now.

As a Pre owner I just don't care. The only time I used iTunes is when I owned an iPhone. Frankly, there are way better apps out there meant for syncing media. I know 5 people who use the Pre at work alone and none of them sync with iTunes. This really isn't that big of a deal.

On another note, Apple really needs to be careful how they handle this situation. It won't take much for the DOJ to look at Apple's iTunes/iPod as being a monopoly. They are by far the most dominate force in the multi-billion dollar industry that is online music. Considering the anti-business Democratic control in DC it will not take much. Obama's new appointee to the DOJ's antitrust division is already targeting Google as a possible monopoly, and they haven't really pulled anything "evil".

That's a load of crap. Please name them. I'm looking forward to seeing this list.

pure laziness on Palm's part. And moreover, do they really think this is what their customers want? It works one day, doesn't the next, and works again in a week? If I were a Pre user I'd get really tired of that really fast. Just develop your own solutions, ya lazy leaches.

The only reason Palm is doing this is for attention, they are not doing this for the benefit of their users, please. If they were they would do what the likes of RIM does. They only want to rile up the anti Apple trolls up against Apple and get some media sympathy, pathetic.

Because Palm crashed a party that they were not invited to and are complaining because the host kicked them out for that? Plam has no rights into Apple's proprietary systems. Palm is NOT RESTRICTED FROM ITUNES CONTENT. Apple publishes SyncServices and the tracks in iTunes are not locked to any program.

Guess what. All companies link hardware and software unless it is open source. Apple is no different from any other company that manufactures a proprietary system that they have been distributing for years.

That's great, but they'd still serve their customers better by using the CORRECT method for iTunes synching, like RIM seems to do. That would mean more work for Palm, of course, so maybe this hack is just a temporary measure? Still an odd thing to do, when Apple offers other options (the library XML data).

if thats what they are really trying to do..I have a bad feeling its going to backfire

Wow I am really surprised at the even distribution of the positive and negative ratings. I figured id be reading NOOOOO WE ONLY WANT ITUNES TO SYNC TO ONE DEVICE, WE HATE HAVING THIRD PARTY SUPPORT.

This is a positive for me, ive never considered having more options for the transfer of media through itunes a bad thing.....

How is it a monopoly? Apple hardware running on Apple software. What legal reason do you suggest that would require Apple to open its software to other brand hardware or vice versa? There is nothing preventing other companies from manufacturing and selling other devices and software except that the consumer prefers the ipod. It is not a monopoly simply because they hold a large majority of the market.

Got their lil' Lamprey suckers on iTunes..

So Palm dev teams would rather spend their dollars leaching than actually showing merit for their own work... how quaint...

If I had bought a Palm I would feel like I'm walking on ice.

Competing with Apple for no reason, wasting man hours, and shortly after the failed launch of their crummy SDK.

1. You don't have to update iTunes so you literally will ALWAYS have a way to use iTunes with your Pre.

2. This is a tiny update in the much bigger 1.1 OS update which if oyu read the list, is a great update.

3. Cause one iPhone developer said it was crummy? Its different yes..but Palm flat out said, the Pre is not for hard core games right now. Otherwise, nothing but praise for the easy of the SDK over at some developer forums.

People people people, some are missing the point, Apple is not the bad guy here and if you'll just sit there and read this carefully maybe with logic you'll understand, OTHER companies have their own hardware devices and software to communicate to iTunes, this is ok and Apple see no problem with this and RIM is included, and they are the "enemy" but Apple is like it's cool you got your own software to wrk with it no problem buddy, BUT the PALM has their phone PRETEND IT'S AN iPOD, they trick the iTunes software with a work around, this is where the problem is, if Palm made their own software like RIM and others to work with iTunes, it would be FINE, but they didn't they went the lazy/sleazy way, and that's why all the hate is on them and why Apple is not to blame, they're fine with 3rd parties having their own software work but when they have a device that's not an iPod say it's an iPod that's where there's trouble.

The attitude on a non Apple/Palm forum is significant different.

Over at TXB.com in the electronics section people think this is hilarious the back and forth.

Oddly enough people are upset on this board about it.

yet its free for windows

Correct Free For Windows Users that have iPods and iPhone's, And given away.

At least Apple Offers both Windows and Mac versions,

Unlike Microsoft that only has PC based Windows only versions of the Zune Marketplace.

Still Waiting for that Mac Based Native Version.

Oh, and one more thing: Palm webOS 1.1 re-enables Palm media sync. That's right -- you once again can have seamless access to your music, photos and videos from the current version of iTunes (8.2.1).

A nice Jobsian touch.
