if google was smart they would buy palm to get their IP and patents. They could implement the features on Web OS into android and also have a long list of patents to pull from in the future.

We had one palm device - a Tungsten T.

If you didn't use it for a while, simply recharging it was not enough. You had to resync it as all of the information was lost. I thought this was a defective palm device but apparently that was normal. I found this to be very annoying and the device has been a real dust collector.

I would would hope that newer palm devices have a better system like the ipods where the data is stored on flash memory or hard drive.

As I recall with using another palm device, the Alphasmart Dana, this is normal. Hence why you have to make sure it continuously has a charge.

Palm has been in deep trouble for awhile now. At shareholder meetings they reported units shipped and never units sold. Meanwhile no one was buying the Pre and the market became flooded with Pres which retail channel couldn't get rid of. That's why you can go online and buy a Palm Pre for $25 with a contract.

Some people theorize they may be operating in debt now.

With the way things are going, I'm guessing whoever buys Palm will not be actively supporting webos, or the hardware that currently runs on it (maybe if htc buys them....).....

Of course, being the fanboy that I am, I would have to say Apple should buy them. If not for all the patents and intellectual property... Will help them in their lawsuits against Nokia...

(If somebody has already given the same analysis, my apologies for the duplication.)

I am concerned that, should a company with deep liturgical pockets such as HTC or Lenovo, buys Palm, long, drawn out and very expensive legal confrontations between Apple and the new owner are sure to ensue.

What's religion got to do with it?

Apple should buy Palm...
The hardware inventory is valueless to Apple. The only thing that might interest Apple is the patent portfolio.

... Adobe
Adobe's bloatware has little value to anyone but Adobe. It would take considerable work to streamline the interface and reduce number of software pieces. Apple may be the only company able to do so but I doubt if there is any interest in doing so.

I don't see how its idiotic. I never mentioned that Apple should buy them ALL, just some.

Palm can be had for less then 1 Billion easily and thats over paying. Adobe is what around 18 Billion?

Apple has the cash and if they wanted to expand into 3D and get back into real compositing (Motion is a joke compared to Shake) then Nuke would be great and any of the other 3D app companies mentioned.

Yahoo if they want to take on Google, and why not they are creeping into Apple markets. iPad competitor looming, admob buyout, nexus 1 etc...

NVIDIA would be great boost graphics and lower power consumption with custom parts.

LOL, it is only Monday but this sentence already a favorable contender for the the mighty "Most idiotic statement of the week" award.

Adobe isn't too farfetched.

"They are lazy, Jobs says. They have all this potential to do interesting things but they just refuse to do it."

Buying Palm would definitely be a defensive move. Worth it for the small cost.

Have you considered running for public office? You seem to like to spend money like Congress.

Their innovation with the Touchstone inductive charger may have been the best thing lol

The Touchstone charger makes their phones feel luxurious. No wonder everyone is trying to sell inductive power addons now.

And with the latest update, the pulsing WebOS notification light makes it easy to glance over at the charger + phone and see if anything has happened.

I'd rather buy Apple buy these companies that hold key technology that can potentially open up Apple to new markets or strengthen them versus say a competitor like Microsoft or Google scooping them to later hurt Apple.

Sun was a missed opportunity to strengthen Apple with technology ang solid engineers, let's hope they don't pass up Adobe.

This was Apple's plan all along.
Have some people pretend to "defect" and go to Palm.
Those people make sure nothing is done to save a dying company.
Apple buys Palm dirt cheap.
Palm guys/ex apple get huge bonuses.
Well played Apple.

webOS is amazing, it's even better designed than iPhone OS, even if lacks all the complexity that Apple had to pursue in order to make a viable comercial and competitive platform.

The cloud mgnment, multitasking, card behaviour is elegant and beatifully done, so i'm totally sure that Apple will follow the Palm's clues. Ever noticied that modal notifications in iPhone OS? this, is like, what? 1980?

Eh, I don't know about that.

I finally just got Sprint to take back my Pre and swap for a blackberry. The OS was pretty legit but the hardware just blew. All I have to do now is pray for a Sprint iPhone

I have never understood this attitude. Why do people root for companies to fail? What a negative time we live in.
Well I doubt he/she was hoping and waiting for the day when the company closed. They probably just don't care that they did and are a little enthusiastic about it lol.

In saying that, we do live in negative times and you can attribute that to the people who control mass media. The same families who want a new world order and want to enslave people through methods that pit us against each other.

P.S. I wonder if U2 made money in the end with Palm? I gather they made quite a lot even though it's being sold.

Um. Or we are just happy that the free market is validated, and that even an entrenched market power, after becoming complacent and making enough mistakes, can be dislodged, thus reassuring us that technology and our options as consumers will continue to improve despite the current smartphone oligopoly. Neither Palm, nor any other company, is entitled to survival, thus they must strive to meet the demands of the marketplace.
