So what happen to:

What ever happend to those that jumped from Apple to Palm?

Are they still there or did they jump ship to a deserted island?

Palm Pre was the BEST innovation and alternative to iPhone or big compagnies/products in general.

It managed to be small and to integrate a physical (even if too smal) keyboard, it had the best alternative touch screen to the iPhone, and moreover it managed to do (still does) the things better than the iPhone did, that inspired both the jailbreaking scene and the late/not-impressive-at-all OS4:
Beautiful, efficient and responsive multitasking, synergy between mails, chat, google, facebook etc..and centralised notification/control.

In fact they were so advance that the really nice ad they brough to the public already bragging about 4G network, ended up beiing followed by way too futuristic/forecasting new age revival ads.

But the mainstream, marketing strategy and mass consuming is what it is: Not enough apps, not-games friendly enough, no enough proximity marketing and advertising etc...

Competition is good for all of us. Not that I would've bought another Palm. Unfortunately, it appears that everyone else had the same idea.

Wasn't really competition though.

The original palm devices were really cool and revolutionary, but much like TiVo they mismanaged a huge advantage for years and years.

I still have an original palm handheld 100 shrink wrapped sitting in a closet. (Don't worry I used many others, this was a gift for friend who never opened it for some weir reason.)

Welcome to Apple in 1996.

In fact, I am glad SJ brought Apple this amazing turnaround without losing on its leading innovation...I use Apple computers since 1989 and know what it was like when everyone else was telling you to jump ship...it pays to be faithful, as I have converted at least 20 people to a better world now.

I remember commercials for the Palm Pre that were shown again and again during the remake of The Prisoner a little while ago. They featured a very strange looking actress and were downright disturbing to watch . Just awful marketing. Those commercials probably reduced demand for the Pre.

I agree — the remake of "The Prisoner" was downright disturbing to watch. :D

Palm's IP

Unfortunately for Palm, much of the IP and the BE OS ended up at PalmSource, which was acquired by ACCESS of Japan a few years ago.

[nelson]Ha Ha[/nelson]

I'm all for competition, but how many times can this company go under before they finally hang out the "Do Not Resuscitate" sign? If you were one of those Apple employees who jumped ship to Palm, you'd be pretty pissed by now (and putting your feelers out as to whether you might be able to come back).

The centralized notifications is still something iPhone OS is sorely lacking. And both the card interface and Synergy were nice ideas. From what I heard, though, performance was only mediocre, which is honestly too bad. And like you said, not enough apps, marketing, etc. I used to use a T|E, and before that a IIIx. Kind of sad to see them go.

So now that Palm is DEAD and HTC on its way out, who is next on Apple's phone hit list? RIM?

HTC is far from “on its way out”.

As a current Pre user, former Android and iPhone 3GS user, I'm pretty bummed by the announcement. This does not, however, mean that Palm is dead. A buyout, infusion of cash, and a complete revamp of hardware and marketing could actually bolster the Palm brand and bring it back into the mix. I don't think that will happen, but it is certainly possible.

Palm's main problems were poor marketing of the Pre and hardware issues on original Pre builds. The original marketing campaign was vague and did not showcase the heart of the device, which is obviously WebOS. Personally, after spending significant time on iPhone OS, Android, and Web OS, I can say that, for me, Web OS wins hands down. Layered calendars with Symphony syncing from multiple cloud sources, a beautiful notification system, and polish that Android lacks are what drew me back into the Web OS grasp.

Here's hoping for a buyout, influx of cash, more development and solid hardware to compete with everyone and push developers to create better and better products for us all.

Hahaha. I said this was going to happen from the time the ****** Pre was released. Later, suckers.

It's Palm's own fault... if they had released the Pre in February it would have 3GS like specs months before the 3GS was released. Also they released it on Sprint...

The Pre was a good phone with potential that was hurt by terrible marketing.

Are you suggesting that HTC is about to die? HAHAHA.

Apple Should Avoid Trouble

(If somebody has already given the same analysis, my apologies for the duplication.)

I am concerned that, should a company with deep liturgical pockets such as HTC or Lenovo, buys Palm, long, drawn out and very expensive legal confrontations between Apple and the new owner are sure to ensue.

So, why doesn’t Apple just avoid those battles, and use some of its litigation money to buy Palm itself. By doing so it will avoid the legal distractions and future liability. And, additionally, by owning Palm’s patent portfolio, Apple may gain some market advantages in addition to the legal protection.

So, Apple may be getting the best deal of all by buying Palm itself.
