Why on earth for? The only value Palm has is in WebOS, and Google already has an operating system.

For that matter, why would anyone buy Palm when there's a free-to-use and very well supported operating system in Android?

Because htc hardware running webOS would be way more compelling than android. IMO.

I got an ipod touch because i wanted to consolidate my palm Z22 with my nano. Boy I see that thing here now; it's so clunky and ugly.

Na na na hey hey hey goodbye.

sad

This is really sad. I owned a Treo for two years--it was the best phone I had ever had until the iPhone came out. It did actually have a small amount of gestures...you could swipe a photo back and forth to see more of it...

I love my iPhone but I hate to see Apple completely annihilating the competition.

Death by iPhone.. Good riddance..

This is kind of saddening, since the Pre is a genuinely nice piece of kit and I was on the fence between getting an iPhone or a Pre at one point.

The 'Pres' 'Droids' and 'Heros' of the world are what will hopefully keep Apple on its toes and without that kind of competition, they'll stagnate.

Palm have a rich history in the PDA world and have made a commendable effort to defend against this fresh onslaught of contenders of the last few years.

I wish them the best!

The history of Palm will be studied in business classes for years. Even the best talent could not save it.

They did have some great talent which most came from Apple haha, but Jon made some poor decisions managing the company that are ultimately what has led it to where it is now! Sad because Web OS really is very very nicely done!

I remember when people on this site when shoving this phone down people's throat as an iphone killer for months, damn how time flies by.

As much as I LOVE my iPhone and wouldn't switch to anything else and love OS 4 that is coming, I can say that I honestly think WebOS has a better implementation of multi-tasking than anyone!

It will be VERY interesting to see what happens here and who snatches Palm up! WebOS and their patents are well worth the purchase!

Google & Apple: Not too likely but if done it would be to keep the competition from getting WebOS and their patents.
HTC: Makes a LOT of sense, it would be about differentiation which is very needed in the market right now. Also to get the patents which would really help them with Apple right now!
Anyone else that buys it would buy it for WebOS to differentiate themselves as well as, again, the patents to keep Apple at bay. Android and WP7 just don't offer an opportunity to handset makers to position themselves competitively with products that are differentiated from the rest!

Apple should buy Palm and while they are at it Adobe. :D

Other possible acquisitions: Side Effects Software (Houdini), The Foundry (Nuke), Luxology (Modo), Maxon (C4D), NVIDIA and maybe Yahoo.

I'm not an expert on patents (cmaier, where are you when we need you :D ), but Hotsync is a technology dating at least ten years back, and I'm not sure whether that is still a very significant patent, as most if not all smartphones sync data with home computers nowadays.

Actually, depending on what (and if) was patented, it could be very valuable; if current hotsync methods use what is patented. The real value would then be in the "IBM Defense" - "you sue me for patent infringement, and I'll just review my bazillion patents to see how many you infringe. Now, let's talk licensing." Owning basic patents is a way for a OEM to protect it's customers.

because webOS is WAY better than android... and because for a company to have its own OS is easier for them to manage updates and control everything themselves, not be left waiting for google, then working with the carrier etc...

to all the iPhone lovers out there, who are bashing palm... take a moment and realize that it is webOS that made you all go "wait... apple... we want multitasking too... if they can do it, why not you??" and you finally got it (kind of)... webOS is flat out nicer than iPhone OS or android... I love apple products, but no doubt about it webOS is nicer... just a shame that palm had the worst marketing ive ever seen... I really would love to see HTC buy palm and use webOS, both so they can shut steves lawyers up, and because an HTC EVO with webOS would be about the best phone imaginable with todays tech...

Oh and apple, if your smart, you will buy palm so HTC cant shut you up, and while your at it, do multitasking properly, and adopt their notifications, they sure as hell are better than the stupid in your face cut you off system you got goin on... actually, just throw out iPhone OS and use webOS after providing devs a simple way to convert their apps...

Apple needs to acquire Palm Patents

Death by iPhone.. Good riddance..

It would make a whole lot of sense for apple to acquire Palm at this point for one purpose alone: patents.

Palm is one of the companies that Apple could not go after with patent litigation simply because Palm holds enough patents to potentially warrant mutually-assured-destruction with Apple. That is to say, if Apple lost with regards to patents in a counter-suit from Palm it could cost them dearly.

Essentially, both companies have been infringing on each other's patents. As such you never saw either company go after each other because its a toss up as to who might win. There might have even been an undisclosed cross-licensing agreement between the two companies for all we know.

The last thing Apple wants when they are going after HTC/Google is to give those folks a chance to acquire some patents that they can use against Apple. Apple needs to use those cash reserves now and buy out Palm if for no other reason than to acquire their intellectual property rights.

However, if Apple has already signed a confidential cross-licensing agreement with Palm they may be safe from Palm's patents indefinitely (no matter who might eventually own them).

Hoping HTC buys them and puts webOS on one of their devices. Would be brilliant. webOS is a great mobile OS.

Palm has a history of pulling itself out of the fire. Don't count them out until they are out.

The Palm WebOS is a truly beautiful bit of kit. Apple could definitely do with stealing a few concepts from that OS. The card metaphor for multitasking is brilliant, and the notification system blows the doors off of every other smart phone out there.

I hope if they do sell, whatever company buys up Palm continues to use the WebOS platform.

WebOS is without the prettiest OS but novices apparently considered difficult to use. If Palm had taken enough time to smooth out the rough edges we would be mentioning it in the same breath as Nokia, RIM and Apple.

Because Apple controlling all of those companies with it's iron fist is good.

So when I said Palm was DEAD following its brief misadventure in the world of telephony and Jon Rubinstein's ridiculously bad management and low-level tactics, pundits laughed at me...

Now the question is: who's laughing now?

Next up for sale: Dell.

Apple Should Buy

Apple should buy Palm just to own all their patents to all the other touch devices/technologies they've created and then completely disband them and discontinue all their products.

We're not even sure whether HTC will be allowed to continue selling phones in the US in their current form. ;)
