Indeed. This is starting to go into the same direction as Psystar.
Someone @ Palm must really hold a grunge against Apple for taking this road.

Yeah, you know who? None other than their CEO, Jon Rubinstein. I'm pretty sure everything has to be approved by him because he's trying to lead Palm back to the Promised Land, but trying to use iTunes to sync with a non-Apple product? Come on. In a way, it's neat because it could spur more iTunes music sales (not sure if H.264 vid runs on a Pre, I doubt it) because the music is now iTunes Plus, but Apple isn't making any money off of the Pre, so it isn't fair to their business model.

People cry on AT&T for Apple giving exclusive right to them on the iPhone.. Don't they understand that Apple has a huge benefit from AT&T as a result.

They all slap you charging huge amounts of money both on the phone and the mandatory data plans.

If they get the money any way during the 2yr contract.... obviously they are cheating you by not being transparent....

Now I really like what Palm is doing....Hatsoff!
So you clamor against an everday contract with a phone, a very commmon one, but applaud palm for sad back alley ways of fixing their own problem?

Yes...why not...

So you clamor against an everyday contract with a phone, a very common one, but applaud palm for sad back alley ways of fixing their own problem?

Common...let's face it. Would some one really install another application say "Pre Tunes" for doing about the same thing as iTunes on your mac?

This is just a redundant software...just like how apple said when it comes to installing Opera on iPhone beside Safari.

This is the time some one has to standardize the way music is being sold in this country or anywhere in the world. In the name of selling music they sell their stuff and block others from selling their own.

Apple sure is afraid of Pre and that is good for customers!

It's very likely a personal thing with good old Ruby. He'd like to pull a "second coming" a la Steve Jobs. He felt fairly marginalized by all the iPhone activity before he left Apple. He wants to be that next tech superstar and pull an Apple-like comeback.

Except that story's already been told.

The statement "As PreCentral points out, the move is a bold statement by Palm given the company's apparent misuse of Apple's USB Vendor ID in order to permit iTunes media syncing." on the Macrumors original post is very misleading, as they said Apple was misusing Pre's VID by blocking it from iTunes ... See the below statement.

"Palm has released webOS 1.1, which, along with offering more robust EAS support for business users, re-enables Palm media sync," said company spokesperson Lynn Fox. "Palm believes that openness and interoperability offer better experiences for users by allowing them the freedom to use the content they own without interference across devices and services, so on behalf of consumers, we have notified the USB Implementers Forum of what we believe is improper use of the Vendor ID number by another member."

Macrumors and PreCentral, I think is trying to manipulate the original report. Why would some one violate the USB board rules and yet, complain on others... Get yourselves on the same page guys!

Get the facts right

Facts:
1. Apple originally blocked the Palm's Pre device by their USB's VID which is the original mistake from Apple and the reason why Pre reported it to the USB Implementers board.
2. Because, Pre has to find out a quick fix to it to get into the iTunes, they identified their device with Apple's Vendor ID (happens with firmware update on Pre) - which is also not a good business as they faked the USB drivers. So before apple gets on them they reported to the USB forum as a pre-measure.

So looks like Apple started the mudslinging and Pre did a quick fix to help their customers by putting their reputation at stake*.

* - Pre's rep was at stake because there are millions of Apple fan boys out there falsifying the information.

So Apple is the one who originally put the hack in place that showed the Pre as an ipod?

Again....

No! Apple blocked Pre by their Vendor ID violating the USB forum guidelines and so Pre made himself look like an iPod to continue what it was trying to do before the last iTunes update.

Palm implied as they complained to the USB board that "Apple started it and so we continued it".

Apple blocked who, who made the first move by advertising itunes syncing, if Apple had blocked them, why would the hack work in the first place? I wonder why the old Palm OS devices didn't sync with itunes, why doesn't the Centro sync with itunes? Why isn't Palm up in arms over that, they put in a hack that they acquired from the Apple employees working there and now want to cry foul when Apple blocks the hack. If they want to go down the legal route, they will get smoked and seeing as how they are broke, it will be a messy journey for them.

Good question from a great Apple fan! And you answer your own question when it comes to Palm not crying about Centro. Driving into iTunes with Centro wont do them or the device any extra good. So they had nothing with it really.

What I was trying to say is that Apple cried foul by blocking Pre which they should not have done in the first place.

One should have really learnt their lesson from Apple how the price of iPhone got dropped from its original 499 to 199 today with the same regulations from AT&T. Apple is simply cashing on your craving for their aesthetics. Just a foul game!

I love it, Palm can do whatever they want because, if Apple sues them for patent infringement they hold enough patents to prevent the manufacture of another iPhone.

It's nothing with the patents really.... nor is it a software hack on iTunes....They tweaked their own USB driver to fake an Apple's device (say iPod).

The driver is configured with the (Vendor ID) VID when you first plugin the Pre into your computer's USB after the Web OS 1.1 update. So Windows or Mac would see the device as an Apple's device instead of Palm's.

when can I expect to be able to sync my iPhone with the Palm Desktop software? When can my Epson All In One Printer use the HP Control center to scan/copy/fax(or vice/verse)? When will Sony's Media Player or Windows Media player be able to access my iPhone? or Palm's Pre? or Nokia's Phones? or ...

I see no reason why the iPhone SHOULDN'T be able to sync with Windows Media Player. I mean, it doesn't for 2 major reasons: 1, Microsoft didn't build in the support, and 2, Apple is constantly changing the encryption on the database in the phone. The first reason is justified: If Microsoft doesn't want to build it, they shouldn't have to. But in the case of Amarok, who DOES have support for the iPod, Apple shouldn't be aloud to stop them; To stop Amarok from syncing with the iPhone is anti-competitive, and supports an "iTunes is a monopoly" case. Throw in there some "Well, the music industry wouldn't allow it" arguments from Apple, and suddenly we have a possible anti-trust case on our hands.

Apple never cried foul, they just provided an update to their software which is within their rights. Palm is the one crying foul running to the USB group. Apple warned that any feature updates may render unsupported devices like the Pre not working with itunes.

I know this will upset people...

Are you fan boys retarted?

I dont need to own an iPod to get iTunes... I can download it and use it as my MUSIC MANAGER.... No one wants to install 10 programs just to sync one set of music over all the devices they have. It makes sense to just have one app to manage your music and syncs with everything.

A friend has a PC and i used his WINDOWS media player... You know what... that FREE software lets you sync your music with a freaking USB thumb drive... So, i dont need a zune and can still sync all my music through one program and not 10....

In all reality... Apple still wins by letting the Pre sync up. i use iTunes to BUY music through the music store in which apple still makes SOME profit... Why must apple be a NAZI and only allow me to sync my PURCHASED music with an iPod... (and the first gen didnt even have a SHUFFLE feature, the simplest thing in the world).

Why would i want an iPod anyway... Its just gonna blow up and burn me to death in my sleep...

If a media player programmer wants to support iPods (I havn't seen any evidence that Microsoft does...), they should be aloud to. In the case of WMP, Microsoft doesn't have the privilege of supporting iPhones, because Apple blocks them. This isn't the same as saying Apple needs to force their support into other players, it just says that Apple shouldn't STOP others from supporting their products. It is anticompetitive for one company to say to another "You aren't aloud to build a product that can sync with our stuff..."

Crappy? If crappy means awesome, then you're completely right. But crappy, like a brown colored-substance, then you're so off-base it's not even funny. You haven't even used iTunes so what gives you permission to comment?!? Go play with your 18 Pre apps with the dorky copycat Pre kids in the sandbox and leave us innovative, awesome kids alone!

Loser.

You are entitled to think iTunes is awesome, just like the rest of us are entitled to think it's not. Apple telling me that I can't use any other media player to sync with my iPhone is the same as Apple telling me to like their product or go away. They took my freedom to choose a media player away from me.

This post saying Microsoft's Media Player did not support iPods and iPhones is really not insightful. Actually any USB device is plug and play with windows and hence Windows media player. I dont see a reason why ipod wont work with WMP except the fact that Apple will probably not have full control over the player, like how they do it now with itunes, the music store and the very latest App Store!!!

Any sanity around!

Apple is shutting the door not just to Palm, but to the rest of the world. Now its Palm, then its you... and they still use USB the way they want????

This page, under the section entitled "Syncing iPhones and iPods Touch w/ Firmware 2.x:" https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPhone explains how the iPhone started encrypting it's iPod database after the release of iPhone 2.x. That is proof that Amarok, which is a player that otherwise supports iPods, is blocked by Apple from syncing. Microsoft has never supported iPods, although they could have, but has now had that privilege taken away by Apple's encryption. Apple put that encryption in place to stop products like Amarok and Winamp, etc.

Thank you for playing, but you might want to do a little research to make sure your right before you call others insane ;)

"I agree! I own the license for iTunes and I own the Pre and why should I not connect them together. Why did Apple kick me out in the first place when no one violated any underlying rules?" - Think in these lines...

Either ways iTunes is not the best of a Media Player. That's one of the reasons why they make Quick Time! I wish VLC managed the media better....that would shift everyone away from iTunes.

Because your iTunes license is not unlimited - Apple gets to decide the underlying rules of how it works and one of those rules is that it can only be used with iPods. Apple owns iTunes and thus makes the underlying rules and can change them at will. You don't get to make those rules. Thats the result of proprietary systems. You give up rights to another company under your own free will.

If Palm builds their OS to support iPod's sync protocol, iTunes should support it. However, if iTunes changes, then Palm may or may not be supported anymore...
Anyway, there are ways Apple could block it (And be within their rights to do so) that don't involve violating USB standards... Blocking all vendor ID's not Apple may be wrong (I'm not a lawyer, and I'm not familiar with the spec's), and if it is, Apple should be forced to stay in spec. But Apple shouldn't be required to maintain Palm support if they arn't under agreement to do so.

My argument is this: If, by Palm bringing this to the front of people's minds, and in turn forces Apple to alow other programs to sync with the iPhone if other developers choose to write the code to do so, I call it a win. Freedom to the users, and all that.

Yes iTunes is junk anyway on every platform. Why Palm is even trying to engage in a battle over the right to sync with this POS bloated application is beyond me. It's moronic in the extreme.

Palm has the resources to help fund development of an iTunes killer. There are plenty of potential partners out there who have technology that could be built on to deliver a great consumer experience.

If Palm had great software of their own, they would have another driver to help sell their hardware devices. Hell, they might even make some bucks selling music if they built their own store into the application.

To paraphrase Winston Churchill-

iTunes is the worst form of media software, except for all the others....
