Where do you put the coupon code? I own 7 now, but for that price and free upgrade worth buying it again.

On newegg.com checkout page it says apply promo code. I also guess the Summitsoft is something free. It just adds it on it's own.

I'm a computer programmer and everyone I know uses VMware Fusion. Virtual machines that were created from a PC can be used on a Mac with Fusion. What advantage does Parallels have (besides the price)?

I had the same experience... most of the people at my company use VMWare, and I did the same. I switched to Parallels with version 7 and couldn't be happier. In fairness, my comparison is to one version older of Fusion, but I find its a lot faster, and its integration with OSX is more seamless. I think the biggest thing I gave up with the library of preconfigured virtual machines that are available for Fusion.

i installed paralells on my 2010 mini back when it launched and the thing was slow as hell

Looks like you can buy the upgrade from VMWare fusion for $29.99 which should qualify for Parallels 8.

Click on the VMWare Fusion Doesnt cut it anymore link from the product page

That is exactly what I did.

I said goodbye to VMWare and their $50 upgrade.

Bought Parallels 7 for $29 now I am upgrading to 8 for free.

We will see how it shakes out next year, I could be flip flopping again.

Warning

Just upgraded just for the better Win 8 support (and a bit retina support :)) but Windows 8 applications do not display OK in coherence mode. I only see part of the Win application. When I move the application I move the Windows app within Windows desktop, the coherence window doesn't move along with it.

Created a ticket and got this response:

Although,as Windows 8 is still in the Preview stage, customer support for installation troubleshooting issues is not available at this time.

This is ridiculous imo because 1) Windows 8 is not in Preview stage anymore and is widely available on MSDN and technet and 2) one of the key new features is better Windows 8 support which they don't support at the moment.

They have a KB article on their site saying Windows 8 isn't supported yet, but unfortunately I missed that one. Going to install 7 again I guess because this issue makes it pretty much useless for me :(

The conditions covering eligibly for an upgrade include:

Upgrade to the next version of Parallels Desktop at no additional cost if you purchase Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac on July 25th, 2012 or later – up to eight weeks after the availability of the next version of Parallels Desktop.
Must be a qualifying product as mentioned in #1 below. Not qualifying products are mentioned in #2
Must be purchased from an authorized retailer. Not authorized retailers are specified in #2

1. The following Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac products qualify for the Tech Guarantee:
Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Full Version
Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Upgrade
Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac Student License
Parallels Desktop 7 Switch to Mac Edition
Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac - SD card
Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac OEM Version when either purchased together with hardware or other approved software products. Customer must supply proof of purchase of hardware/software when requesting their free of charge upgrade.

2. The following Parallels Desktop for Mac products do not qualify for the Tech Guarantee:
Trial versions of Parallels Desktop for Mac
Licenses sold under the Volume License Program including PIK/PIKA and Parallels Desktop for Mac Enterprise Edition Licenses
Not-for-resale (NFR) versions
OEM Versions that are purchased unlawfully without hardware or qualifying software
Parallels Desktop for Mac versions purchased before July 25th 2012
Products purchased on eBay
Products sold from an unauthorized Parallels Resellers

To overcome this issue, resellers typically sell OEM software and combine it with free hardware or software - thus making the purchase eligible for Parallels Upgrade offer.
In reality however, Parallels upgrade procedure doesn't look for this. :)

Please let us know how you get on with coherence mode and retina support on Win7/8. I would like to set the Windows font DPI to 125% so I can use a text editor in the 2880 resolution

I wonder how they provide Retina support for Windows-guest operating system.

And also which version of Windows. I am quite used to my XP.

Retina is simply a word for higher resolution. Windows goes as high as the graphics card goes. Some people play games on 3 1080p screens, and I think even 6 screens.

I purchased upgrade to Parallels 7 on August 19th 2012 knowing full well that I would be eligible for Parallels 8 for free (any purchase after July 25th). I purchased it directly on Parallel's website and registered it also that same day.

So far, I have not received an email from parallels to download the 8th version. I"ve owned Parallels 3,4,5,6,7 previously.

Hopefully it will arrive in my email inbox soon. On parallel's website, it tells us NOT to contact them when upgrade is available for a couple of weeks?

And yes, I also checked my spam box on email and no email there either.

I am using 12gb RAM only upgraded from 4gb, hardware purchased in 2010. Maybe it is to take older machines into account?

Well that I get. I don't understand why the max setting is only 8 rather than 16 or 32. People with only 8 would only be able to max out at 8 and the rest grayed out or something.

Regardless, if anybody upgrades today, let us know what the max allocated ram is now is the preferences. :)

The pricing per se doesn't bother me. What bothers me is that they make me buy a full license for each of my three Macs (plus my GF's). How about a multi-license pack, Parallels?

Hmm, I've never actually read the license. I've got my copy installed on two macs. Maybe because Adobe have always had a two machine allowance I made an assumption. After all, I'm only gonna be using one machine at a time. Oops.

Thanks for the Newegg tip!

Newegg has Parallels 7 for 29.60 after coupon EMCYTZT2138 with free upgrade to 8

Even cheaper than the Fusion $29.99 upgrade! Makes the upgrade price somewhat more bearable. I'm on version 6, which won't even work with Lion. Was contemplating never bothering to run windows again, (I think I'd survive), but I do occasionally want to run a Linux VM for work. So, I'm in for one. Thanks for posting!

FYI, for those wondering, you have to buy the OEM version, and it will auto-add some free software to your cart so you qualify for the parallels 8 upgrade.

Retina support is proper support, like movie preview in FCP. Windows runs in 1:1 pixel resolution (windowed). In fullscreen, Windows is exposed to the render resolution of 3840x2400 when running OSX is running the highest scaled setting and UI is scaled up.

Works really nice. Worth the $49 for me.

DUH! How did I miss that blank.. lol...

I was reading this though on the Parallels site :
Parallels Desktop 7 for Mac OEM Version when either purchased together with hardware or other approved software products. Customer must supply proof of purchase of hardware/software when requesting their free of charge upgrade.

What do you provide them to get the free upgrade?

What's nice about this?

It's been a disaster for me. Of course you want to run in full screen mode, for easy flick between mac and windows. But windows does not deal happily with
3840x2400 at all. AT ALL. My windows are messed up, fences doesn't work, and the screen display resolution settings panel is totally confused.

Complete disaster!

I'm in the support line queue ... I hope there's a silly mistake I made or easy fix...

No issues for me, Windows behaves as it should. No messed up windows, and screen resolution settings are fine.

Purchased parallels 7 on July 24th and I have a rMBP waiting for this update.

I've bought 3 different versions of Parallels, all of them within a month or two of a new version which I had no idea was coming, and all of which then required me to pay again for the new version. My favorite was the one I bought literally the night before the next one was released. No love from Parallels on that one either.

I realize we can't always expect a company to offer upgrades for free, but this is the only one where I've had it happen this many times, and have gotten no concessions.

Just purchased the upgrade.

I've been running the beta for a couple of months now. Latest version from a few weeks ago is solid, no problems and feels quicker than 7. I'm using it daily.

Parallels upgrades = Rip off

I seem to be one of those who is forced to pay for an upgrade every year and it happens just before the new version is about to be released. Maybe it is part of Parallels marketing plan to include their program in the MacUpdate Bundles just before releasing a new version (and just outside of their free upgrade date). This is one way to consistently piss off customers and Parallels does a good job at it.
