hey brag about being fastest and i gotta say...they're right. i've used both and parallels seems way faster in just about everything. i hope vmware doesn't give up tho

You should try being a user from v2 like me.
Punished for my loyalty. The price I have paid for upgrades alone runs into hundreds of dollars which is just ridiculous.

Why not a sensible fee like $19.99 for existing users?

To have to pay 60% of the regular price....AGAIN... is a joke!

You're a slow learner, aren't you?

That sounds like it should be a free update. PD5 owners should skip this version, maybe get PD7 if it brings anything decent to the table.

In anticipation of P6, I ordered another copy of P5 from Amazon this morning. $19.95 after rebate and a free upgrade to P6. :)

I hear you. I probably use Parallels once every two months, and it seems like every time I turn around there is a new version out that they want me to pay 50-60 Dollars for. I usually wait around for a few months until someone offers a discount of sell it as part of a bundle. For my use, the upgrade features in the past have been marginal, and I stlll find the start-up speed painfully slow.

Secret

From Parallels site:
"And we've got something special for you that we can't talk about until Sept 14."

Any thoughts?

Might be that extra feature that people with PD5 are looking for to justify paying for upgrade.

Free Parallels 5 with Mac Purchase

FYI, I just saw this morning that MacMall is offering Parallels 5 free with a new Mac (-1 downmod for mail in rebate, though). Looking at the rebate form and the upgrade to v6 instructions on the Parallels site, there doesn't seem to be any problem taking advantage of both. Good through Sept 30.

$20 for PD5 after Amazon rebate and a free upgrade to PD6?

Yes please.

Product ordered from Amazon.

So, it's installed.

Boots so much faster than Parallels 5, at least using the bootcamp partition.

The Win7 benchmark gives me the exactly score for what is worth, 5.1.

I'm gonna try some games..

Edit: No you can use the virtual machine as if it were a VNC

Am I the only one who thinks Parallels' release cycles are too short? Less than a year between paid upgrades for an $80 product seems excessive.

I agree, and since I no longer have a need to run any Windows software on my Mac I won't be upgrading. If the time comes where i need Parallels, I'm sure that a new update will be along shortly.

their constant paid updates are ridiculous. I used to pay and I found that every paid update was a disappointment. I always hoped it would be better but changes are marginal. Parallels should be honest about their pricing and charge an annual fee as that seems to be their business model. You can opt not to upgrade, but it won't be long before your current version is no longer supported and won't run on a certain os build.

I wish there wasn't a need for this at all. Microsoft office for Mac, and me forcing people with visio to export to pdf has taken care of 95% of my window needs. It is two web applications that I have to use at work that keeps me from ditching the using windows all together. I wish companies like IBM and VMWare (vCenter client for vSphere) weren't short sighted and developed applications outside of the need for MS/IE/.Net.

Nova and Avanquest are both contracted through Parallels to sell their product, you might be taken to one site or the other when you go to place an order. Here is a chat i had with "Scott" with Nova in regard to upgrades and buying the discounted version available on sites like amazon. Hope it is useful.

Chat Content:
Scott: [12:43:46 PM] Welcome to our real-time support chat. How can I help you today?
Carl: [12:43:52 PM] Hi
[12:44:07 PM] I already have P5 and I got the upgrade email about 6 for $49
[12:44:40 PM] But why would I do that if I can go to Amazon and pay 49 and get a 20 rebate back from you and then get a free upgrade to 6?
Scott: [12:46:23 PM] That sounds like a lot of work, but I couldn't beat that price for you. Please be aware the Parallels rebate is one per household, so it won't work if you've already received a rebate for your previous Parallels 5 purchase.
Carl: [12:47:34 PM] Don;t think I have, I purchased online a while back, seems many are going to do this in the forums, why not just sell the upgrade to "loyal" Parallels clients for $29?
[12:48:10 PM] Seems like every year we have to upgrade at a substantial cost, doesn't seem fare to me
Scott: [12:48:31 PM] I understand your concern, we are contracted with Parallels to sell the product at the price they've set. Please note, however, the upgrade is not mandatory if you don't want the expense.
Carl: [12:49:00 PM] I see, ok I will take that up with them then, thank you for your time.

Keep us posted I am anxious to see the improvements, I have a Core i7 iMac and a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. I would love to see improvements.

I am now chatting with Parallels so far nothing much to report..... Stay tuned.

Got absolutely no-ware, so my suggestion to those who want 6, is to buy the 5.o version from Amazon and then upgrade to 6 for free, with the rebate you get a full version of 5 and the upgrade to 6 for $29

If you have already done this in the past, or got the discount for version 5 in the past, use a different name and mailing address as Nova says they track the rebates and if you have bought version 5 this way you will not receive any further discounts. (Purchased before Aug 15th).

Stuff like this makes me really wish I could port Microsoft Money to run on the Mac outright, rather than thru the VM. That, and being able to use my 1TB drive (formerly formatted for the PC, and too much data on it to reformat it for the Mac) are the ONLY reasons I even boot up Windows at all.

Since I don't really play games & use the Mac for everything else, I guess I'll be skipping this upgrade.

Come on, you should love it.. It's just the Apple business model with a little more amperage. :apple::apple::apple:

I'm sitting this update out as well. Just purchased Parallels 5 mid April this year. They should extend the offer back a bit more than 45 days ;)

Another option besides the Amazon deal.....is to wait and see if Parallels 6 is included in any of the winter/holiday bundles that seem to come around, and many times better than the ones in spring/summer/fall.

For those considering the Amazon purchase:

I ordered on Sunday, having no idea P6 was being released. (I have P3, and never upgraded because I missed the free update cut off by TWO days. However, I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard, so...)

It was delivered today. The rebate redemption instructions inside the box has the info for the $20 rebate, AND if you have a prior or competitive product, an ADDITIONAL $20. So... it cost $39.99, free shipping, I'll get back $40 in rebates, all for the cost of postage. Basically, a free upgrade from P3 to P6! :D

Would love to hear how well this works for games.

I know it'll never be as fast as just going Bootcamp, but any opinions and experiences posted here will be appreciated by me. Thanks.
