Keep us posted I am anxious to see the improvements, I have a Core i7 iMac and a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. I would love to see improvements.

got 5.5 with my core i7 imac although most of the ratings were past 6.
P6 is faster than p5 although I do think that having more ram will have just as much of an affect. Then again I'm not tech enough to really know......

Parallels 6 installed

I installed parallels 6 and is working very good, I can see some improvements in windows XP and windows 7 boot times. It seems to be stable but I have to test more.
I will let you know my findings.

EDIT: The task that runs a virtual machine is 64 bit as I have seen on the task monitor...

I am very happy with the upgrade to 6, but then again I was happy with 5.

Win7 boots really fast now and apps start up really quickly too. MS Access 10 launches so fast I can barely read the splash screen. I do have 4GB of RAM dedicated to the VM though.

I think the surprise is the remote access feature, if you look under preferences>mobile you find a screen that indicates some sort of Back to my Mac type of remote logon.

Stuff like this makes me really wish I could port Microsoft Money to run on the Mac outright, rather than thru the VM. That, and being able to use my 1TB drive (formerly formatted for the PC, and too much data on it to reformat it for the Mac) are the ONLY reasons I even boot up Windows at all.

Since I don't really play games & use the Mac for everything else, I guess I'll be skipping this upgrade.

Someone needs to tell you about NTFS-3G: http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/2010/09/ntfs-3g-for-mac-os-x-201088.html

Purchased V5 on July 21st 2010 and asked them if I can get it V6 for free... Obviously not. They're not making anymore from me.

Will change back to Fusion as I was originally using that and they seem to treat their customers A HELLUVA lot better.

Apologies if it's been asked and answered but: Can I install Parallels and Fusion on the same machine?

I wouldn't run them simultaneously, just wondering if I'm forced to choose...

I would think that the only issue with something like this would be if you were trying to access a Boot Camp drive from both applications. Otherwise, I would think it would be fine because the OSes are virtual and would be isolated to the respective programs that they were installed to.

You don't have to upgrade

I don't understand all the posts on here complaining about how often they release paid updates. You seem to be implying that you're somehow being forced or at least pressured into buying the upgrades, but you're not. If your current version is working fine for you then keep using it. Why would you switch to VMware when your current version of Parallels is working fine for you, just because Parallels released a new version? It would be like if I got rid of my Subaru for a Toyota in protest just because Subaru released a new version of the car I owned.

Note, I'm aware that there are some software upgrades that do pressure users into upgrading. For instance you might feel pressured to buy the latest version of a word processor because other people send you documents in the newer format. Or you might feel pressured to upgrade to a newer OS version because new software is getting released which only works on the later OS. However none of these types of things are true for Parallels. There's no reason you need to upgrade if the current version is working for you.

I have both installed and run both on the same bootcamp partition (not at the same time) with few issues. Parallels has caused me more issues (and frustration with the rapid paid upgrade cycle), as it has sometimes gone into a pattern where it hangs my machine if the screensaver comes on. Haven't figured that out yet, and don't know if it might be caused by some interaction with using the same windows system in 3 modes..

First time I have heard that.... They upgrade to fast...

I understand the frustration with prices but to get the extra speed. Its worth it to me.

Well color me impressed with the speed improvements - Parallels 6 really DOES boot Windows a LOT faster than V5 did... and V5 was already fast to begin with (boot times vary, but one extreme example took 3 seconds - Parallels must have been fully cached that time... at the other extreme I've had cold boots take as long as 1 minute).

Besides that, there's a minor sound glitch with Parallels 6 affecting startup noises Windows plays getting cut off in the middle. It's nothing too serious, just sounds weird.

Completely hit and miss and you have to pay for upgrades which are generally just them patching things that were supposed to work and didnt. I have no reason why it installs or doesnt. One paid upgrade completely broke the previous version and I had to reboot reinstall, de-install and reinstall etc..it took me something like 6 hours to get the thing installed. At one point, it just decided to install without having tried anything different. I am terrified to try and upgrade again.

They couldnt pay me money to use Parallels again. I hope this email repays Parallels for continuing to spam me to buy their new upgrades even after i told them I didnt want any more emails from them.

Update complaints

I don't understand all the posts on here complaining about how often they release paid updates. You seem to be implying that you're somehow being forced or at least pressured into buying the upgrades, but you're not..

Well actually you are, as the announcement of the new version heralds the end of development of the old version. This means that version 5 will soon stop working properly when Apple updates OSx (10.65?) or boot camp which it inevitably will.

I don't think most people would mind a small reasonable upgrade fee, but to have to pay 65% of the full retail purchase price for an upgrade to a product you've already paid for...well that's just taking the piss.

I'm basically being punished for being an existing customer. I've spent hundreds of dollars on it so far, yet someone who's invested nothing can get it for just $20 more than my upgrade - how can that possibly be right?
They should worry more about their existing customer base & less about the new.
Major updates too often & at too high a cost just alienates the customer.
An update at $19.99 would be far more reasonable to those who have already paid full price & who (like me) have already paid for other updates too.

I'll stick with 5 until it stops working (just a matter of time), but I'd go with 6 now if they'd have rewarded my loyalty and priced it more reasonably.

Which One To Use?

I use both Parallels Desktop & VM Fusion. I have in general favored VM Fusion. But everytime I try to increase the size or number of the hard drives used I come out with no difference in size reported by Widows XP & drives 2 & 3 do not even show up in the Window drive list. Fusion says drive 1 (A:) is 101 GB, Windows says that it is 20 GB & still too full. If Parallels Desktop will let me actually resize drive A: then I will be switching to it. At this point I don't care, I just need to be able to run a Windows efile program to operate my business.

How do you increase the size of the virtual hard drive with Parallels Desktop or VM Fusion? Say I don't know anything & I can not read software companies instructions. That seems to be the case.

I hope they fixed the slowdown at boot time. I mean their kext's make your boot time go down the drain, and I want to keep it at 6 spins tops. Otherwise no go.

BTW: Are they still fighting this lawsuit where some German company claimed that they wrote it for them?

I remember years ago running Linux and having WINE based TransGaming...back then it was free or just about to go to a modest pay terms...but anyway running Linux and TransGaming WINE I was able to play just about any game at the time...and in full 3D mode with 3D acceleration. For instance, I was a big Everquest player at the time and I could play the game with no problem on Linux using TransGaming. In fact, it seemed to play better than under Windows.

Now, when I heard that Apple was going to Intel, I thought it would only be a mater of time before we'd get full 3D games playing on the system using a version of WINE. But so far, many of these "emulators" have fallen way way short. I would have hoped there wasn't any real "emulation" going on anymore since it's all the same processors.

So is Fusion and the others able to do Windows games yet? Can I play LOTR online through this? Bioshock 1 & 2? Just curious....

Do people use the Adaptive Hypervisor setting on Parallels?

Just wondering what people think of it.

I decided to upgrade my version 1 to 5, it only cost me €30 and I can claim the vat back. I'll wait another few years before i upgrade again :D
