If he paid $17,000 for that car he got really really really ripped off, its only worth about $10,000 (if its in excellent condition and has like 20,000 miles on it). So it's really proably worth like $5000-$8000.

You could buy a brand new Honda Civic for that much, inlcuding tax. Granted it would be the base model, but still.

And I agree with what everyone else said about you parking like that. Except I'd get all my friends to park diagonal on both sides of you and make sure that all of our doors some how got caught by the wind and dinged your car, and I'd make sure the drink I got on my lunch pass mysteriously fell off the top of my roof right through your T-top.

Man, its threads like these that make me want to go back to high school, so little discipline so much fun.

Yeah, it really doesn't sound like the parents got that good of a deal on it.

And, if he's really worried about getting his doors dinged, for $17,000 he could have a brand new Smart Fortwo Passion Cabrio; which, from the looks of it, he could park in his backpack.

All you guys are way off base. Ditch the parking lot altogether and park on the nearby lawn next to those nice little trees they just planted--and leave it there for 20 years to keep it ding and scratch free. That way you will have a mint condition car that might actually be worth worrying about.

There is absolutely no way an 8-9 nine year old American car, especially a Pontiac is worth $17,000 (unless it comes with a diamond in the glove box). It's not a desired car, it's not a collector's car, and they cost less as low as $20,000 and up to $30,000 depending on the model. If you know anything about cars (esp american) that have such a broad base price, in the end the high end model used costs about the same as the used base model. Even if it had 40,000 miles (1/2 as many miles as average) on it the KBB Suggest Retail value is $11,000 give or take maybe a thousand or so depending on the options. KBB is very unrealistic a lot of the time with its pricing, usually going way over what the car is worth.

I would guess it cost closer to 7k rather than 17k.

I don't think you get a could get a "bad deal" on this car paying 2x as much for it as its worth. Unless you are a complete impulsive idiot that doesn't know car values or research buying buying from a moron that doesn't know how much his car is worth or a really really crooked salesman there is no way you would buy that car for $17,000. (sorry for the run on sentence)

So anyways, what really is the point of this thread? Honestly? What do you really think people will think if you take up 2 parking spots with 1 car? I think they are made a certain size for a reason. Unless you are a complete and utter socially inept being, which I am sure you are not, you know what people are going to think. If you really want to protect your "$17,000" 8-9 year old car I suggest just parking on the outskirts of the parking lot away from other cars.

That doesn't work.

I frequently park out where I don't believe anyone will want to park because it's a long walk to the mall entrance or wherever I happen to be.

Someone will park right beside me. :D

Priceless.

If you really want to protect your $17,000 8-9 year old car, I suggest keeping it in the garage, keeping it under a cover, hiding the car keys so no one would drive it, and just for good measure, take out the battery and remove the tires and store them in a safe deposit box halfway across the country to make sure no one steals it either.

Look, if you spent that much....err...your parents spent that much on a car, they wanted you to enjoy it. And enjoying it means driving it. And with driving it come risks. But if all you do is worry about those risks, you're not going to enjoy driving it. Door dings are a part of life, and the less of a douchebag you are when it comes to parking, the less chance you have of getting a door ding ;)
