A redesigned iPad 5 and a 'low cost' iPhone 5C are all but a forgone conclusion at this point.

All that really remains to be seen is what kind of spin Apple is going to put on the announcement at their event when everyone already knows what is coming.

I wonder what will happen if they only release the 5C and it is a low cost iphone?

I see a few things here:

  1. Lots of "leaked" things for the 5C by Apple, so to cover the manufacturing of a higher end model, or 5S.
  2. Apple aren't actually making a 5s and this 5C will be the only iphone release this year.

Personally, if its the latter, that would be a huge fail for Apple. I can't honestly see them doing this, it has to be a double iphone release this year....but it is very quiet on leaks for a possible 5s. Would Apple only release a 5C? Id say that would be stock price suicide.....

Edit: 3rd possibility, and one i thought was going to happen up until the leaked photos of the same camera unit as the 5; the 5C is the new and only iphone, with a bump in internal specs with plastic back.

New Edit: 4th possibility. Apple release the 5C in sept. Its basically a 5 with plastic colour. Everyone goes nuts as theres no 5s, complaints of Apple being stagnant. Apple has plans to still do a 5S, just maybe within the next 6 months. But how does the super secret tech company calm people down about the 5s coming along without actually telling people they'll be a new higher end phone soon.

I hear ya brother.

I'm almost getting the feeling like there isn't much new at all. We have seen plenty of leaks for the iPad and iPhone 5c, but nothing major on the 5s.

It's like Apple are hoping the OS refresh of iOS7 is their main drawcard. It's been rather quiet on the 5s front. Do we even know if the 5s is coming this year?

Apple may just do the 5c and iOS7 with the iPad.

This is what im thinking. Well, either they just release a cheaper phone and get burned, or the 5C is improved internals and replaces the whole S naming.

I guess everyone has their theories. There has been little evidence of a 5S but that is likely because there will be little dramatically changed between it and the 5 other than processor and GPU bumps. There has been evidence inside of iOS 7 about a fingerprint sensor. That could apply to the 5C and the 5S though.

I don't see Apple only releasing a 5C this year. There will be a 5S too. My theory is that it will have a better camera, a fingerprint sensor, and be called the iPhone 6.

It's still too expensive to produce the 5 for Apple to make it available for $100 on contract after the update this year. So in my theory the iPhone 5 goes away leaving the 5C and the 6 as the only iPhone models available this fall.

Transparent Logo

could we see a possible glowing apple like the macbook line? They can some how direct the display light to the back panel? one can dream :p

Would be cool if iPhone 5C is 16GB only. Then the 5S/6 is 32/64/128GB. Even if there isn't a 5C... they need to make 32GB the standard now.

I just glad that Apple has decided to produce the retina iPad Mini for 4th quarter 2013. Google Nexus 7 2nd generation made Apple built it! It the perfect size and shape for my needs. The iPad 5; is not going to sell well. Most buyers who already have the 9.7" iPad; are going to jump in for the retina iPad Mini!

I be the first one in line to get the Mini retina!

Apple better not dumb 5C down like they did the 2012 iPad Mini - old A5 and 512MB RAM.

U got me wrong. I would never switch over to anything else at this point. I'll be up at 3am per-ordering the 5S no matter what. Just like I've done with every iPhone release. I just think more this year then any the S cycle isn't gonna cut it much longer. I don't know why I have that feeling and I don't really know what I want. I leave that to apple to figure out. But when I think of the 5S getting a speed bump, new camera, and possibly a FP sensor (which I am excited about) I wonder if it'll be enough to last until late 2014. They have the App Store and ecosystem locked down right now. And I think that's their ultimate goal. But hardware wise, I think they will be surpassed by the time the 6 rolls around. It's happening right now and I hate the current competition. Most people but phones based on hardware alone. They don't even think about the smoothness and uniformity of the ecosystem. Some do, but the majority don't. They think the phone looks cool, so they buy it.

Do you think the 5S will break any preorder or 1st month sales records based on the rumored specs? I'm genuinely asking. I just think the 5S is gonna be the least popular & uneventful launch in iPhone history. Hope I'm dead wrong.

I think you're right. Im also thinking the 5s is going to be an anti climax. I also have the feeling apple are just going to do the usual "just enough to make people upgrade" trick.

What's interesting to me about all "these leaks" and every writer saying how hard it is to keep a lid on things in the supply chain and at the carriers is how relatively quiet things have been on the new higher end iPhone while details on this "5C" and all kinds of iPad stuff has been coming out...

...so what's the explanation for THAT (unless I've missed such leaks)??

It says this 5C is the only release we will see for an iphone this year....

You are quoting DED? That clown? Now you're clutching straw.

This method of discussion is used by so many here with no facts to bolster their failed point. If DED is a clown, can you dispute what he says with facts?

Florian Mueller, DED and PED are always called clowns and biased but no one can prove them wrong.

i'm afraid, like every decent looking android phone that comes out, that the iPhone 5C will come in only 16gig. way to shoot yourself right in the foot.

Im not complaining at all. I'm not asking for apple to redesign or reinvent the iPhone. That's not what im saying. I am just stating the way I feel. And you're right, the entire smart phone market has matured to a point where there isn't much jaw dropping innovation left to pack in right now. And maybe that's why Im not as excited for the 5S as I want to be. I guess I just selfishly crave that feeling I used get before a keynote.

I don't think Apple is doing anything wrong. And ill be up at 3am to pre-order. I just don't like the feeling of not being as excited as I used to be.

The excitement part has been killed for a long time already for anybody visiting MR.
With everybody in China's assembly lines being able to take pictures, parts leaks, speculation and common sense, we pretty much know 95% of the time what is coming.

The last surprise was the new MacPro reveal, but then I wasn't following that one.

So, if you still want to get excited about Apple products, stop reading MR or for that matter any newspaper rumor report.

Over the years my purchase decision is made by evaluating what I really need and use, not what I expect or what other devices have.

Keeps me sane, because I know what I buy is already old technology by the time I open the box:)

"Already"?? Already means something has already (the clues in the word!) happened (past tense)
Maybe you mean "release it now"?

Maybe you mean to stop being so pedantic, because it makes you look like a douche?

Looks nice, but I wish the white iPhone 5C's front would be white too! Why isn't it? It would look so much nicer and cleaner, like the MacRumors renders.

The front always looks better in black because the LCD itself is black - you get the illusion of the display not having edges.

You didn't really answer my question. What is going to make the iPhone 5S "Waaay" behind its competitors. The iPhone 5S may not be an exciting revision, but neither was the Galaxy S4 the BB10 phones, or any of the Nokia MS phones. From what I see it's all incremental. No giant leaps like from Palm to iPhone.

A FP scanner has some very intriguing possibilities and has the potential to be the first killer app/feature since the 4's retina display. We'll soon see.

As for the competition closing in, from a hardware perspective, sure, but from a software/ecosystem perspective? Not so much. Our company is a major Windows/Android OEM and most of us use iDevices for personal use. Even my Google contacts use iPhones and iPads. That alone should tell you something.

Android is great for the media and carriers and they've been pushing it really hard, but in actual use, it stil feels like a very clunky and unpolished iOS.

With regards to the FP scanner, other than a lock screen security feature, what other awesome uses can it actually have? I mean its cool, but really isn't that much of a game changer or amazing development. NFC would be far more useful and diverse in its application

Good bye iPad 2. :)

Hello iPad 5! :D

Ditto. Finally have a reason and need to upgrade. My iPad 2 has been good to me over the years, but it's time I put it out to pasture.

True, but then the white iPhone 4 and 5's front is white, and those are flagship phones, as opposed to what the 5C will probably be…

lol marginal performance ?bro I owned the first 3 iPads and the iPad 3 was fantastic . I'm assuming u never owned one .

And as soon as you said your waiting for the next mini lol well your credibility went right out the window

I love how people talk about a product solely based on reviews but never owned one themselves

Owned an iPad 2, played around with my friend's iPad 3 for several hours soon after it came out, testing my favorite apps/games. More than enough time to get a good impression. Performance was good, on par with the iPad 2, but with a great looking screen. However, I agreed with many reviews at the time that Apple fell short with the iPad 3, even if it was still a good device. Of course you also had that report/rumor which turned out to be true that Apple was planning to release two iPads in 2012. As for my credibility, it's not any better or worse than yours. The retina mini will be a very viable option for those considering the iPad 5. Frankly, I have a feeling that eventually Apple will drop the 9.7" iPad for a larger size (12.9"?) iPad/Macbook hybrid by 2015, keeping the 7.9" iPad mini, which may just be called iPad.

Peace out.

Its all just taking too long. And I expect the 5C will be just that little bit too expensive and lacking in features to make it worthwhile for all but the dedicated.

Even as a long time Apple user I have to admit the iPhone is looking decidedly old fashioned against the competition.
Maybe the OS update can give it a makeover - but when your kids say - don't get one it looks dated, you got to wonder.

C'mon Apple - pull your finger out!
