Verto, I know exactly how you feel. I ordered my first Mac in July about a week before the upgrade. So it just arrived earlier this week. Unfortunately I am on vacation and have not had a chance, nor will until the 8th to play with it. But I am excited and you should be too!

I know watching the Fed Ex tracker can make you crazy.

That's O.K. I live in VA and UPS ground messed up and was shipping my
Dell 24" to VT.

When it went from Nashville to New Jersey, I knew something was wrong.

I ended up driving to the distribution hub to rescue it from ending up in
some unknown abyss of missing packages.

I would've drove out in my car, found the Fedex truck, and forced it to pull over so I could secure the package before it crossed the state border.

This RAM looks pretty good. Thats a decent price too.

Am I correct in thinking the iMac only has two available RAM slots, one of which is already taken up by the factory-shipped 512MB? I've been looking for GB sticks, planning to buy 1 a week or so after getting the comp, and a second one sometime after that.

Ah yes, this reminds me..assuming it DOES get here on or near the 11th, that will mean I will go the entire weekend without being able to use it, as I have to go out of town for a wedding :(

It's always a good idea to get "everything else"
done around your house before your new Mac arrives, because you will be glued to your new system and nothing else will matter much.

Your whole computing experience will be far more enjoyable and productive as you learn some new cool feature every time you work with it.

Your family will wonder what happened to you as you
slip away at all hours to tinker with your new machine.

Enjoy! :D

Well it sat in Sacramento all day, and left around 5PM. Assuming they deliver it in the same time table approximately as they did with the printer, there is a chance it could get here by the 9th or so. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic, but I'd really like to play with this Mon-Wed, days I have off from work.

Haha, thanks for the advice. I wish I could take down this computer desk right now..actually, that is a good idea. I might swap it out for a temporary plastic foldout desk to use while I transition.

Well yesterday I spent the morning taking apart a grill so I could put it in my car and drive it out to a dumpster, and on the way back I decided to stop by OfficeMax. I walked out with a new computer desk, so I spent the afternoon dismantling my old desk. Once that was done, I took some of the longer pieces outside, sawed them into thirds, and took them to the dumpster as well. Then after giving the newly exposed carpet a thorough cleaning (my dog has a habit of slinking back between the desk and wall and chewing on her toys), I assembled my newly purchased desk. I put my PC up on a temporary table so I have internet access, etc. It will within a week or so of my iMac arriving be stored.

Anyway, here's some photos of Stage One, now complete.

New computer desk for iMac
Save for a couple loose cables, and a temporary wired connection from my PC to the D-Link router, this is all set up. I've got the keyboard tray unassembled on the workstation.

Because it will index changes made to that folder during the game and decrease performance, according to Blizzard.

Will do, once I've got it installed. If I've got any problems, I'll be sure to bug you until I figure it out.

My iMac is out for delivery, actually has been for about an hour now. I'm not sure if I want it to arrive before I leave for work, or if it would be better to have it waiting for me when I get home this evening, with a copy of WoW in hand :)

Well in all the excitement, I forgot to mention that I've gotten my iMac up and running, and even played WoW for a couple hours last night. It runs louder than I expected when doing something like running WoW, with CPU temp maxing at about 180F.

I was surprised at how well the speakers perform; their downward angle I suppose causes it to bounce off the wooden surface, but whatever it is doing, it is loud and clear. The display is beautiful, very sharp and crisp.

My only concern is I have 1 dead pixel in lower left quadrant, that I didn't notice until playing WoW, with lots of dark areas. What are my courses of action? Do I have to take it to the Apple Store? Will they fix it w/ no questions asked, or will I have to push for it? How long could I wait before taking it in?

One dead pixel? I don't believe you stand a chance at getting it fixed or replaced for free. I think you need to have a certain number (more than 1) of dead pixels in a small amount of surface area to qualify for replacement or free repair. Correct me if I'm wrong, guys. :)

You have 14 days to return your purchase with no questions asked.

One dead pixel or not, you should be COMPLETELY satisfied with your purchase.

I understand after all the time you waited that another order would
be a hassle, but you should insist that they send another one or allow you
to pick one up at your local store and have the genius transfer any BTO options to the new machine once you're satisfied that it passes your inspection before you leave the store.

Just be polite but firm and they should accommodate you.

1 lit pixel... I wouldn't complain too much. Unless it is ALWAYS in your eye.. But they're so hard to see, dad says he has 2-3 on his iMac G4, but I have trouble to find them..

Apple computers cost more for higher quality, you should only expect it. If you aren't satisfied with your computer then complain to Apple.

How do I check for screwed pixels?
Make 5 jpeg images, black, white, red, light green(or yellow) and blue.. Put them in a folder and set it as your screensaver.. You should soon see any dead/lit pixels.. Dunno why you want to look, then you will never stop looking
;)

EDIT: I see I quoted the wrong thing, half assed correction in place

Indexes aren't stored at the folder level. They are stored at the volume level. The folder in question will still be indexed but just won't come up in any search results. It makes sense to turn it off since there isn't anything worth searching in that folder.

nice one :D
so how does it feel, from switchin from a pc to a mac? does the screen look smaller or does it look better than the LCD screen u had for ur pc?

Well this is the first time I'd had real long-term exposure to a widescreen computer display. I like the way I can set Safari on the left half with iChat in the top right and Family Guy playing in the bottom right.

The LCD looks a lot better than my Samsung; colors, brightness, all much more vibrant. I love the Dock, but not how programs don't close up all the way when I exit them, and I don't remember the keyboard short cut to do that, so I have to go up to the toolbar and close it that way.

Much easier to use overall. A couple times I've had to force quit some apps. My biggest gripe has been trying to transfer my music over. My first attempt I just moved the folder as is, with it's .wma and .mp3s but then I decided I needed to convert them to .aac to work. But when I do that I end up losing half of my library, I guess because some are protected. I didn't find this out until I'd transfered the files over again, to see huge gaps.

However, I can not rave enough about how lucky you guys have been with AirPort. When I got my iMac, it went through the setup without a hitch. When it needed to connect to the internet, AirPort brought up a list of available networks; I clicked on one, and its been up ever since. Hooking up our 2 PC laptops, both running XP, was a nightmare; all kinds of confusing steps to do something which should be as basic as turning on a computer. All kinds of technobabble about access points, etc which made wireless networking an impossibility for say, my mom, and even my dad who is around computers all the time had trouble. Apple 1, Windows 0 in this case.

And I'm still in awe over the beauty of it all...and haven't even scratched the surface IE GarageBand, iLife, Automater(not sure where to begin with this, or what to use it for). Quicken works, but I have trouble setting it up with my account and getting the right balance to show up.

Overall, a 4.99/5 (curse that dead pixel!)

Hey, in response to Automator:

I don't use it too extensively but when I do it's because I'm doing something VERY repetitive and I become curious as to how I can make the job easier.

For instance, there was a site with 1920x1200 wallpapers intermingled with other resolutions... so I made an Automator workflow that found all of the URLs to those images and then downloaded them to a specific folder.

I also used Automator when I wanted to download a bunch of fonts from a "free fonts" site. I put together a workflow that downloaded all of the fonts, in the format I wanted, to my folder that I set up.

So, though you might not be able to open it up and think... "Hmmm... what do I want to Automate today?"... just think about it when you're doing something simple and repetitive.

Or hell, it can be not repetitive at all. I made a workflow to put the selected files into a new email composition... I wanted to easily email item if I saw them in finder so now I just have to right click the file, go to Automator, then Email Item. :) Oh the joys of automation

EDIT: Oh, and your setup looks sexy with all that white/aluminum and wireless action you got there.
