And the battery life is flat out pathetic

That remains the main issue for me.

It's a hassle if one is a fitness focused person.

None of the features or tweaks or integrations with the iPhone --- none of it matters for me -- if the battery life doesn't get a lot better.

Wow, you go off! Someone is very upset that other people make different choices.
Interesting that you just assume I'm upset! How dare you make assumptions about what I posted when I never said I was upset! Remember that.

You went directly from my comment, which is that I'm not going to carry this guy's water to help his business, to claiming I'm a fan of the "walled garden." You have no idea what I think about that topic. Remember that. All I said is that I'm not going to petition Apple to change their business model at this guy's request. Everything else in your comment is what you made up.
Ahh, well that is more specific than your original comment. Now I know that I know nothing about your love/hate of walled gardens. My bad. Thanks for clearing that up.

What I do love is that you have the energy to post about how you won't lift a finger to help some random company deal with the anti-competitive nature of a company worth a few trillion dollars on a website dedicated to puff pieces about said multi trillion dollar company. 🤔

Or maybe I'm still just making stuff up?

Nope. It provides different innovation - features that benefit from tight integration with a secure, private ecosystem.
Nope. Tight integration can exist with an open ecosystem.

They do face competition. Some people buy Garmin, others buy Samsung and Google.
People discount non-Apple products due to basic features being locked out by Apple.

Hopefully they will not do so voluntarily and will not be forced to do so. There are already alternatives for those who want them. I do not want to lose the alternative that many people prefer.
What the heck are you even talking about? "I do not want to lose the alternative that many people prefer"? Huh? Make it make sense?

Sorry, my iPhone does not treat me like a child, it makes it so I do not need to spend energy worrying about privacy, security, etc.
Plenty of Android users don't need to worry about privacy and security. Plenty of iOS users have terrible digital hygiene and still get hacked/scammed. These things are not absolutes.

If you want an open ecosystem, you have several options, especially since you do not use an Apple Watch. Move to Android and stop trying to make Apple’s ecosystem into Android.
What an assumption! I have an Apple watch! I like my iPhone, despite all of the annoyances I have with it. But sometimes I want something that's not made by Apple to work with my iPhone. Sometimes someone else makes a better product than Apple and I don't want to have to switch to Android to take full advantage of it!

It is much more difficult to do, as it means that changes are harder to make (as they cannot be done completely unilaterally). If they had an open API, and the made changes, many people would then complain that they were doing it just to disadvantage other players.

If they do not like that model, they should feel free to move to a different one, with an open ecosystem (such as Android). I (and many others) prefer things as they are.

I will clarify for you since you were unable to follow: I (and many others) like things as they are. Your goal seems to be to eliminate that option. Those who want an open ecosystem, have Android as an option. Those who do not what that have iOS/iPadOS/tvOS/watchOS. You goal is to eliminate that choice for us.

They may not be, but Apple certainly care more about my privacy than Google does.

There are always tradeoffs. I like things as they are, you do not. I do not want the ecosystem to change to make it more like Android.

This is what I never understand..
It's actually not in anyone's interest, as an Apple fan and customer, to have them be able to rest on their laurels to this degree.
I partially agree with this. That's how Detroit lost the automotive industry to Japan. GM, Chrysler (and to a point, Ford) made terrible cars and trucks starting in the '70s, and they just ignored companies like Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Nissan. But then Japan started making better vehicles, and by the mid-to-late '80s, they were kicking Detroit's butt all the way up Gratiot Avenue and all the way back down Telegraph Road.

"...and then there was a Hard Times, and then there was a War..." Okay, that happened 40 years earlier, but still; gotta give some credit to Mark Knopfler's writing.
The Apple Watch "updates" have become totally embarrassing.
They are basically just chip bumping it and doing nothing.
I don't know what this means.
But look at all the new watchband colors!
I actually like the watchband colors, although I buy knockoffs off of Amazon.
That and I think they like gating new watch faces behind new releases and/or partnerships with companies.
Maybe they're holding out for the day that new emoja don't do it for people anymore?
I don't see how adding an API would change anything for you. Don't want to leave Apple's zone - great, don't. Build the door for the people that want to go outside and the ones that don't can leave it closed.
Yeah, but it never really works out that way for people, does it?
This is an all too common theme these days.

Too many people don't want something .. but then also want nobody else to have that thing, even if it won't impact them in any way at all if the other person has the thing.
I'm always the one asking game developers to add an on/off switch in the preferences, and then I get scolded by somebody who doesn't want me to have an option.
Apple can be Apple and still be open...
As long as you understand that you may be asking the leopard to lose his spots. Or for the zebra to become a carnivore.
...I DO want Apple to open it up and will continue asking for it. I don't want to use Android, I want to use a more open iOS ecosystem. Stop telling me to go elsewhere; I will not. Simple.
Keep asking. Tim Cook will have to retire one day. Maybe then we'll all get an open iOS ecosystem.
That's not even remotely true. If you look at the demographic data on Apple Watch ownership you'll see:
  • Millennials (aged mid-20s to early 40s) represent the largest group of active Apple Watch users at about 25%.
  • Generation Z users (roughly under 25) are close behind, making up about 24% of the user base.
  • Generation X (ages approximately 40-55) accounts for around 15%.
  • Baby Boomers and older (age 55+) make up about 10% of Apple Watch users.
It's the most popular watch on the planet. Everyone has them but the numbers make it clear that it's no even remotely "mainly old men". It's mainly people under 40.
Thank you for setting the record straight.

...that’s just untrue. I see many young women wearing AW and everyone in between.
So do I.
Second, is your daughter actually saying that sneakers, which encompasses a huge breadth of footwear, probably the most common footwear at least in the US, as either a societal faux pas or a niche, neither of which is true? Does she think only men who wear dress shoes, boots, or flip flops are “cool”? I’d say either your daughter has an extremely peculiar point of view or there is some miscommunication.
And let's none of us forget: It's not "only" old men who wear sneakers. So do old ladies, middle aged men and women, and young people too. We mostly stopped wearing dress shoes during covid, and I've even seen a lot of people not wearing socks, either.

Hell, even guys named "Chad" and women named "Cherie" wear sneakers.

But sneakers as the most common form of footwear? Not even close. Most people can't be bothered to wear proper shoes. Have you been in public lately? Lots of flip-flop type footwear out there. In no time, we've become like those people on the ship in the movie "Wall-E". Soft, pear-shaped, and shoeless.
Did you remind her that you’re an old man wearing sneakers?
LOL, now THAT'S funny right there!
...Or maybe I'm still just making stuff up?
I respectfully submit that you're both making stuff up. Come on...be friends.

That's the best you could come up with?

Yeah clearly you are. Gotta make stuff up to fit a narrative, I guess.
