I rebuild one and the hose mount failed and shot coolant all over... after the rebuild. :(
See, that's the kind of thing I'm afraid of. Which is why this would be one of the few times when looking for a deal I'd be willing to pay for a Mac in good condition.

Explaining to my wife how it is I got coolant all over the parquet wood floor, or the carpet and God forbid anything else is what I want to avoid. :D

Luckily it didn't go anywhere. That is far from the worst of my computer tales on repairs.

I had a Compaq from my school which unbeknownst to them had moisture damage. I plugged it in my living room and every cap blew right off the PSU's board. I had a Dell Dimension 4600 catch fire. However, the best was the HP that threw its fan blade and bearing right off the heatsink and cracked the video card. The stuff I have to fix for people!

What happened with Zen? Anyhow, I was actually looking at Logic Boards for you. What speed Logic Board came out of this 17"?
My understanding is that he, along with a few others decided to start a website. Things fell through, someone backed out and now he runs his own blog.

Zen's problem was never that he was rude or attacked people, although it could be construed that way. Zen was direct and told you what he was thinking. If he felt you were stupid, he told you that. Diplomacy or couching things or considering how others would feel about his directness wasn't a concern. Eventually, I guess that got him banned. I wasn't in the forums when that happened (meaning on that day I didn't come in to read and reply) so you'd have to find someone else here who knows.

You can be direct with people. But you don't have to beat them over the head, even when you're right. Being nice goes a lot farther.

Can you explain what is going on with all of your PowerBooks?

Sure.

1> 17" PowerBook G4, 1.0Ghz, 2GB ram, 100GB HD, OS X 10.5.8. Dead logicboard.
2> 17" PowerBook G4, 1.67Ghz DLSD-HD, 2GB ram, 320GB HD, OS X 10.5.8. Bad hard drive, does not charge. I know the DC-Inverter is good. The battery sucks, but it would charge in the other PB, so it's not that. So, there's only two other places. Either the logicboard or the battery connector. The battery connector is a $3-4 part, so I will try that first at some point. First off is a new HD though. I could have replaced it by now, but I want a 320GB or better replacement.

I was just curious. I never want the mods or anyone in this community to look down at me. Either way, I am guessing that you are going to fix the 1.0 first and deal with the DLSD later. What res is the DLSD screen?

Yes, the 1.0 is the priority because that was my daily driver. Now the QS and the 1.67 are doing that duty. I love both of them, but I don't need THAT much power for websurfing, light graphic work, email and word processing.

Since the 1.0 was my first Mac I got on my own it also has a special place for me.

The 1.67 is 1680x1050. The standard 1.67 and all previous 17" models only have a max resolution of 1440x852.

1440x900, actually. Also, the DLSD can definately take blazing-fast bus speeds of 200MHz, and possibly up to 400MHz. I fried my 17" DLSD by popping some resistors off (thought they were 0-Ohm, turns out they were 10K-Ohm). I will be getting the resistors soldered back on as soon as I can, only this time in a configuration that should give an incredible 400MHz bus speed. If it doesn't work, I will settle for 200MHz bus speed, which will work for sure.

Note only that the 1.0GHz 17" has an additional 1MB L3 cache bank, making it about as fast as a 1.33GHz-1.5GHz 17". The 1.0GHz 17" can also have even more cache (up to 4 MB with CPU upgrade to 7457) soldered on!

Wish I had that kind of luck to get a DLSD model. One can wish

Well, that just comes down to the same things I've been saying with regards to eBay.

I got my 1.67 in 2010. The seller was a college student who was getting rid of it because he dropped it on a corner. The damage looked pretty bad. Consequently, it only went for $250 or so, what I paid for it. No one was bidding on it really because they didn't want a damaged Mac.

When I got it, it was far beyond what he put in the auction. I already had the hard drive (320GB) so I opened it up to swap out drives and that's when I found out it was a DLSD.

He never mentioned that, he never said it had 2GB ram. Had he done that I'm quite sure I would have been outbid. Everyone thought it was a standard res 1.67.

I banged out the corner a bit and with super glue put the facia back. But as you can see, it's obvious that there's still corner damage. But, it works perfect and up until the charging issue I've never had a problem with it.

Sometimes things really go your way! If you remove all the guts then you sometimes can use a flat piece of metal like a standard ruler and a tiny hammer to bang it out. It isn't fun but it works well...

Oh yeah, but when I got this Mac it was as a replacement for the 1.0, because the LCD had gone bad. So, I wasn't patient enough to gut it and put it all back. I just wanted to use the Mac. So, I did what I could. It's not bad, but it's nothing like it was when I got it.

Later on I replaced the LVDS cable on the 1.0 and when that repair went horribly wrong I swapped out the LCD. At that point I had two working PowerBooks. So, I split things. The 1.0 became my browsing, light duty Mac and the 1.67 became my work/design Mac.

I've said it before, but it's always kind of cool when you pull out not one, but two 17" PBs at Starbucks. I've gotten a few looks, LOL! :)

A few looks... probably more that you didn't notice! In terms of portables, I have my 1.67 that really isn't mine, two iBook G3s (600 MHz and 900 MHz), and a mid-2012 MBP. As for desktops I have my PowerMac G5 (dual 1.8), QuickSilver (Dual 800), and MDD (single 1.25, final MDD made). Maybe I need to sell them off...

We have 8 PowerPC Macs, 9 if you count my G5 at work and 11 if you want to count my 6500 and my 7200.

2 17" PowerBooks, 1 iBook G4, 1 12" PowerBook, 1 15" Titanium DVI (1.0Ghz), 1 PM QS, 1 iMac G3 and 1 iMac G5.

Let me see if I can name them all!

17" 1 GHz for light duty web surfing
17" DLSD 1.67 for heavy lifting
iBook G4 for daughter's use
12" G4 for wife
15" Titanium in pieces in garage
QuickSilver pride and joy Mac
iMac G3 for collection purposes
iMac G5 for family use from RedCroissant!

Did I get them all right?

Pretty much right. You've been listening! :D

I pay attention. How is that iMac G5 running? Any signs of cap failures?
It's doing great. Haven't used it much, but that'll change once my daughter starts using abcmouse.com and once both my kids get back in school.

It's a good Mac.

Now did you get the iSight model from RedCroissant or the other non-iSight model? What's left of that iBook you got from your "friend" that had issues. (Name hidden for privacy purposes)

He had two iMac G5s. I chose the one with the larger screen, don't recall if the other had an iSight or not, but it had a line issue on the screen.

I have an external iSight, two now actually, so that's not a big deal to me.

The iBook…is in pieces. He dissassembled it to check things, found out that connector was bad and just bagged everything for me. Which is fine, because it's essentially dead anyway given that you never know when it's going to shut off on you.

True. Out of curiosity, does your external iSight get hot when it isn't in use but plugged in. Mine is always hot but it works well.

Yeah, there's only two times that it's ever off. When disconnected from the Mac or when the Mac itself is off. Although some iMac G5s continue to provide power even when off.

Apple had a KB on it, but it's gone now. It should only ever get warm (this is a low power mode) but never hot, as in hot where it potentially burns.

Why not push this PowerBook a bit? Wouldn't you like 1.5GHz, with L3 cache? It would be faster than your DLSD, because of the L3.

It is definitely on the hotter side of warm. I am not worried about it as there is nothing out of whack and it works fine.

Because I don't need to. If I am going to push anything, it will be the Quicksilver.

I'm fine with what I have. It works and does what I need just fine. Even when it was working it had an external cache failure, and it still did fine. I'm not using the Mac for astrophysics or anything like that. I browse websites with it. Not much else.

Just because you have a riding lawn mower doesn't mean you should swap the pulleys on it to make it go faster. Same principle applies.

For future reference, if someone reads that, just a clarifiing note: you did swapp it for another, not for the DLSD screen from your 1,67GHz, right? (Because they are not compatible).
