I doubt it will be too long until there is a true blur between organic and human-created things...

Sure, we have that now with artificial heart valves, hips, corneas, etc. I believe we will have many more advances in the future (near and far).

I have been a Sci-fi fan for many years, however...

In this thread we are talking about electronic processors. These are complex calculators, not living entities that 'think' and are 'smart'. One CPU may be faster than another, may be able to perform more parallel calculations than another, may have a larger instruction set than another, etc. It is still, basically, calculator.

So, I briefly scanned over 22 pages of this thread. Since the 13th date wasn't a hit for the announcement, is the general consensus an Expo announcement for the Mac Pro?

Some ppl argue that MWSF is not as consumer-oriented as others make out but last year's mentioned no new macs at all, instead beginning a 3 month period of no new macs (despite having been preceded by a 3 month period of no new macs, making a landmark 6 months without an update to any of the core lines). I would like to think that next year will be different, but we've got to be realistic: it is highly likely that Apple will still be offering the same configuration to our grandchildren for the same prices that the MP line-up has been for the past 15 months.

Screw saving for the new mac pro, I'm setting up a trust fund, so that somewhere down the line, one of my descendants will be able to afford one...

It's curious how Apple treats the Mac Pro and Xserve. Businesses typically don't like being surprised, so I can't see how Apple's announcement mystique is an effective way to market these things. HP announces their new workstations well in advance of shipping, while continuing to sell the prior models to whomever needs them immediately. It's easier for a business to plan like that.

When Apple holds on to a dated model with dated pricing, with no indication of upcoming specs or ship date (though at this point Dec-Jan seems obvious), it's a pretty good deterrent from using Apple servers. It's kind of like the argument of "if Intel plays favorites with Apple, others will turn to AMD": consumers have a lot of other options for servers and workstations, and anything less than cutting edge/competitive pricing isn't going to produce a flock of switchers. Value is king, and even if Apple is selling the current models at a decent rate, I can't help but think how many customers it's turning away.

On a side note, a poster at AI claimed the update was delayed because Apple would have to "dump" the old Mac Pros upon the new release. I could've sworn I saw a similar post here. Stop. Apple doesn't dump their stock; they go to a number of channels, the least of which is resellers. The argument that Apple has to sell through all their current models is bunk bunk bunk.

Speculation.

Now that the MWSF seems to be the most realistic release date, there might be a something brewing?

I mean,the whole happening needs something .
Jobs just cant rant for couple of hours how well the iPhone has sold, or how neat the 10.5 is. Or even about the iPod socks.

There just has to be substance. And a lot. There has to be more rabbits from the hat. If there are not, the whole concept of apples presentations starts to be jeopardized.
They will stop to be the medias darlings and start to generate bad press and even worse, start a doubt whether apple has lost its vision (read: bad for stocks).

So what could the substance be?

1.Now that they have released the iPhone, there is no new phones in sight. Not within a year. Not before iPhone is selling steadily around the world, not just in few selected countries.
So no phones.

2.iPods is middle in their life cycle.

3.No OS X stuff. Well, exept how great the OS X is. Just where to put it?

4.Some of the HW start to be long in the tooth.
Well, actually everything design wise, exept the iMac.

So could there be a complete design overhaul in few products,or accross the line?
Is that a possibility ?
Would Jonathan Ive´s team have had enough time to re-redesign one product, let alone all of them?
Let´s see:

-Macpro case : 5 years old?
-MacMini case : 4 years old?
-MacBook Pro : 5 years (ok,some small updates..)?
-xServe : 4 years?

So,could that be the BigThing?

A complete product overhaul, since of those products could be internally changed at the same time ass well?

-Macpro = Penryn
-Macmini = SantaRosa
-MacBookPro = Penryn (Q1 08 is a estimate,too early?)
-xServe = Penryn

"Now we have a completely new MacFamily to go with the Leopard and your iThingys". -Steve Jobs.

The Apple TV and iTunes will be the star of Macworld...that is my guess. Even if they announce the new computers, that takes only about five minutes...look at the iMac overhaul this year...the Keynote was largely about iLife, iWork and .Mac. There is a lot of time leftover for other things.

As far as no new iPhone, I agree, except I expect a jump to 16 gigs for the current model.

They are

They are not going to redesign the new look for MAC Pro? I am waiting for a new look

They already have DVI.
HDMI would only add sound to the mix.
Any other HD input would be of inferior quality (component for instance as analog input).

I´m stuck

What to do? Just waiting for the update of the Mac Pro, to start editing my first big production, but feel stupid to buy just before an update. Should I get the current MP now anyhow, or will prices drop down on the current models when the new MP comes out? Very frustrating, good advices are very wellcome!! I´m stuck!

I would wait...it is clearly going to happen within the next two months, so I would hold off unless you had absolutely no choice.

I feel your pain. I too need something for my first production and for school, that I really should be starting on by now. My guess is the prices of the old MP will drop so Apple can try to sell them off as much as they can. And the price drop will probably be pretty decent, 'cause there is not too many peeps looking to buy outdated equipment. Just like me, I'd wait for the announcement. The wait definately sucks, but in the long run, it will be worth it.:apple:

Apple is pretty good at JIT (just in time) production. I wouldn't count on many old MPs coming to market after the new Penryn Mac Pros are introduced.

Apple might not lower any prices, unless it's a refurb, but the you'll find closeouts and rebates at MacMall. I think 11% off for the Mac Pro.

You know, I can actually see them not lowering prices; which is completely ridiculous. Who's going to pay for a 2 year old computer, when they can get a brand new one, with new updated parts for a little more or around the same cost? The price should have been already lowered a while ago since it is old equipment.

Are you serious? Wait! What do you call decent? I don't call 10 percent or there abouts decent on what you are describing as outdated equipment. Can you give any examples of Apple slashing prices on current equipment as new models are introduced? I can't think of any and I've been following Apple for 20 years. Even "refurbs", as Apple defines them, do not have deep discounts in comparison to Windows machines.

You're right, I meant to say "should" be pretty decent. Of course Apple loves all the money they can get their hands on.

Since we'll be waiting till pretty much January for the new MacPros, they better do a design update.

I hope they do a aluminum with glass design. Im thinking aluminum side panels (like the macpros have now) with black glass all around the center of the macpro, that would look amazing!
