Does apple normally have to call together a presentation for releasing the Mac Pro or have they just updated the website in the past?

The first Mac Pro was at WWDC, then the "second" revision (which just added 8 cores) was just updated to the website.

The Mac Pro will NEVER be upgdraded. EVER.

In fact, all existing Mac Pros will spontaneously DOWNgrade themselves to 128k Apple ][e's w/ green screens tomorrow.

Later in the week, Apple will announce that will be ending production of all computers and will ONLY sell iPods from now on and ONLY in pink.

how many of these pink ipods will I be able to buy with the 5000$ that I've put aside for my mac pro? can I place a order here?!

PC World Article Nov 14 2007 - Suggest Macworld for the Mac Pro update

It would appear as if the analysts favour Macworld for the updated Mac Pro release.

Apple Could Build Penryn Into Xserve Servers
Agam Shah, IDG News Service

While Apple is tight-lipped about the introduction of new Mac systems with Intel's latest Penryn processors, analysts said the company's Unix-based Xserve servers could be the first to include the power-efficient Penryn chips.

Rumors predict Apple's Mac Pro workstations being the first Mac system to include Penryn processors, though it makes sense for Apple to first plug Penryn chips into Xserve machines to start upgrading its product portfolio from the top, analysts said.

The first Penryn chips, like the Xeon 5400, are the upper echelon of chips designed to first appear in servers and high-end desktops, not home PCs, said Samir Bhavnani, an analyst with NPD Group. The first introductions could be Xserves and Mac Pro systems, then other Mac desktops and laptops as Intel releases chips for those systems, Bhavnani said.

Apple needs something to replace the rusting Xserve machines, and it would make sense for Apple to release a new server by year's end to immediately upgrade its product portfolio, analysts said.

"It's a no-brainer," said Dan Hutcheson, CEO of analyst firm VLSI Research. "You'd want it in the stores before Christmas," he added. Intel has been manufacturing Penryn chips for some time and has built up a large inventory, so it is feasible that Apple will launch high-end Mac Pro desktops too, Hutcheson said.

Dean McCarron, founder and principal of Mercury Research, agreed that Apple should launch workstations in time for holiday shopping. However, most manufacturers have already locked up product announcements as part of the system refresh cycle for the shopping season, so it's likely Apple will launch the products early next year, McCarron said.

Macworld, to be held Jan. 14 to Jan. 18 in San Francisco, is a big product showcase for Apple, and most likely the first Penryn-based Apple server and workstations and will be announced there, analysts said.

"Some of the rumors have been 'Apple's been buying [Intel chips] up.' It's not like Apple will have it on their systems exclusively," Bhavnani said. Hewlett-Packard and Lenovo have already announced workstations carrying Intel's new Xeon 5400 processor based on the 45-nanometer Penryn architecture. Apple won't rush to make a major announcement until Macworld, though it could announce a minor laptop or desktop refresh, Bhavnani said.

Intel is working on Penryn products with around 40 system vendors, including Apple, said Stephen Smith, director for Intel's digital enterprise group operations. Intel cannot comment on Apple product releases, Smith said.

When Apple does put Penryn chips on Mac OS systems, users will be thrilled by the chip's improved graphics performance, Bhavnani said. The new chip's focus is high-definition, and Intel focused on improving video compression capabilities on the chips, which could improve a Mac's graphics capabilities, Bhavnani said.

"Because of the reputation Apple has for graphics and video, that reputation will be enhanced by being one of the first to have Penryn chips," Bhavnani said.

The new chips will also be more power efficient and provide better overall system performance, Bhavnani said.

Apple does not comment on speculation, a company spokeswoman said.

After my visit to the Apple store in Regent Street yesterday cannot help but feel the Mac Pro has reached the end of the line. The only one on display was only barely in the store - confined to a corner on a bench with several Minis. Considering the size of the place this seems somewhat feeble. My local John Lewis usually has two and they sell a multitude of other brands as well. Could the only way to take advantage of Penrhyn at the earliest opportunity be to go back Windows and Dell/HP?:(

Much as I'd like to think that you're right, you have to face the fact that whilst the majority of ppl who buy consumer macs don't check the macrumors buyer's guide and often buy unwittingly just before an update, most of the ppl in the market for a mac pro would know enough to realize that they're selling the same spec computer at the same price as 15 months ago. There aren't many ppl who would spank 3 grand on a computer just like that. I know plenty of ppl who can afford these things, but none who need them immediately enough to live with the depreciation. I know ppl who've been waiting to do all the post-production on low-budget films that have been in the can since spring, but couldn't justify blowing the remains of their budget on the rapid depreciation on perhaps the only physical asset their film will leave them with.

Then again, I know ppl who bought the mac pro the day it was announced and are pretty smug about the value for money they're getting...

Let me get this straight...

Dan Hutcheson thinks that Apple will want to update the Xserve soon, before Christmas, presumably so that all the little kids out there who have asked Santa for a rackmount server won't be disappointed?

On what planet does that make any sense at all?

<sarcasm>

Pixar need a new rendering farm to rush out a new film before Christmas. It's true.

:p

Amen.

Ha ha. Thanks Nugget. When I read the original quote in the news story, I actually thought to myself, "By Christmas? Isn't the Xserve a commercial product?" Then made a mental note to go and recheck what an Xserve actually is.

Ok

First I can careless if its pynryn, over all we have a long ways to go for any application can run fully 64bit on leopard. Try another 3-5years for this to happen.
If it were a cell processor or even better then yes we would be ahead another 5-7years. The more we wait the more we fall behind in technology & the future that awaits it.

To quote a favorite line from The Sandlot:
"You're killing me, Smalls!"

How long do I have to keep limping along with my now 6 year-old Mac. I now have the money saved up and have been surviving by editing video after hours on my iMac at work, but I want to go home!

Please, Uncle Jobs, please release the new MacPro.There's no place like home! There's no place like home.

I'm in the same boat, except I have a PowerBook G4 (and not 6 years old). I have the money ready, just waiting on it to come out... patiently...

the cell is a very specialized CPu and not really that good at general purpose use ... it's good for some set top box (especially handling video streams) or for doing lots of single precision calculations but that's about it

That is a misnomer. Cell is perfectly fine at running "General Purpose" instructions.

get it out

Wouldn't they try and get the freakin machine out before christmas, so companies can get it in the 2007 budget?

Apple should just chuck the last bit of rottin' fruit lying around and get some new fresh on shelves - ****ers!!!!

A Possible Hint

A major online retailer just dropped the price on the 2.6 and 3.0 by $200 with no rebate catch. One can only speculate why.

I highly doubt that, it can think on its own basically a lot smarter then any other processor out there. Also a lot faster

No difference still $3-4k f**king rip off if you ask me. They need to lower it another $1k Apple has issues in pricing their sh*t.

Since most kids are likely to get iMacs or MacBook (Pros) for Christmas then Mac Pros, waiting until MacWorld in January might not be a bad thing for Apple, since it would generate buzz outside of just the professional community.

It always amazes me when someone refers to a metal and silicon inanimate object in this manner.
