Penryn iMac and Mac Mini Updates Soon?

*cough*

Refurb section is empty and the "Limited Time Special Price" offers are gone in UK Online Store and German Online Store... no more discount items in there / or "out of stock"... ... ... at the moment!

So where do all these refurbished iMacs and Mini's come from? Could some of them be simply open box returns? If not it seems that there seems to be a good number that have issues and they get back on the shelf for re-sale (after being fixed).

Or it could be what seems like the horde of people who post here about keeping a perfectly good machine in the box for two weeks, just in case a new model is announced. I'll be there is some amount of QA that has to go into verifying that what is returned is what was bought.

I've seen some pretty shady returns in my day. Worst one ever though is the piece of **** who bought a box of Lego's, took the plastic bricks out, filled it with rocks and returned the box saying it had been a duplicate. On Christmas day, my buddy's kid opened the shrink-wrap and found the rocks. Try telling the kid that Santa put the wrong box there and that they'll have the right one the next day.

If Apple releases a 30" iMac I'll probably pick one up as soon as they are available. I was thinking about upgrading to a PowerMac so that I could get a bigger screen, or, two screens. Honestly though, I think it will be a couple years on the 30".

a 30'... jesus. aint that extreme? it will cost more than a mac pro then. I mean the size of that screenO_O

But at that size they might be able to cram more stuff into it.

I'd love to see a Mac Mini that was more of a Mini Mac Pro tower than the current Mini (which is mid to low end).

Affordable platform for expandability and customization for those of us who can't afford a Mac Pro - sized something like those thin-client business workstations made by HP.

New Mac Minis of any kind could be complemented with revised Apple Displays - what a combo!:D

As someone commented above, Wifi-N as well. And we've got to find something better than the 3100 graphics cards, how about 128mb ATI with option to 256Mb?

Any thoughts? :)

please stevo, put a hdmi output in it instead of a dvi. the mini is now a living room media center connected to a lcd or plasma. imac is the standalone mac. see no reason why not adding a hdmi.

I hope the speculation is right

In trying to chase the rumors down via the Internet it looks like the story pretty much comes from one source, and that other WWW sites just picked up on it. I've got a perfectly good Dell 2006WFP 20.1 LCD that would probably work well with a Mini.

However, my current 2.16 MBP, 2GB memory, 256MB ATI graphics card, and internal 7200 RPM HD (supplemented by a 1TB external RAID0 boot drive) is keeping me from buying a Mini until the specs. get a good bump. Of course a price drop would help too ;)

If the Mini update doesn't happen soon, I guess I might start looking at an iMac 24" just to get better performance, and avoid the 20" iMac screen issues. If I do that I'll be eating lunch at my desk for a year.

So, a bumped Mini sure sounds good to me. Hooking up the MBP to the Dell LCD and external RAID is getting a little old.

I know it's a dream, but I just hope for processor upgrades, an hdmi out and a video solution powerful enough to run my 42 inch plasma. I would get a bluetooth keyboard (ideally with the gesture touchpad) and sit the box right next to the apple tv. It would be my itunes server to run the apple tv, a surfing box for the tv and it would be nice and quiet in the living room. I had hoped for bluetooth and some form of x-windows on apple tv but now with so many movies and having to stream .... I just think the mini would be the best solution. The hdmi output would be the deal breaker. I can add a blue ray player later when they are affordable.

Just because some people use a Mac mini as a living room media center doesn't mean that it is "now a living room media center". May I remind you that most of us are using a Mac mini as our only computer. And there's still a lot of us who don't want to buy a desktop computer with a built-in display. Not to mention that an iMac costs twice as much as a Mac mini. Don't forget that for a lot of people, a Mac mini is the only Mac they can afford.

We'll never see HDMI on Macs until Apple starts selling Apple Displays with HDMI, anyway.

Besides, from Apple's point of view, the :apple:TV goes in the living room, not the Mac mini.

refurbished iMac

Hi everybody, just received my refurbished iMac. It was supposed to be an 24'' 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 320 GB hard drive. But system profiler is saying that it's actually Intel Core 2 Duo with 2.8 GHz and 500 GB (i.e. 460GB because of the space size discrepancy). How come? Any suggestions? Anyway, if that is correct than I am more than satisfied that I have not been waiting until the update...

Refurbished Macs sometimes are custom models with features added on. This isn't always the case though.

refurbished iMac

Alright. So I just had some kind of luck. But why does it say 'intel core 2 duo' although it is 2,8 Ghz? Shoudn't it be 'intel core 2 extreme'?

Thanks for the info!

The mini is quite 'full' in general, I don't think we can expect more than a jump to penryn and the addition of wireless-n, although to be honest, that's enough of a virtual dangling carrot to make me wait to see what they give us.

Not to mention that an iMac costs twice as much as a Mac mini.

I'm not sure I agree:
- Mac Mini = $649 without any options and no DVD burner
- now you might consider the keyboard and mouse you own as "free", but you did pay for it at some point. Let's add another $30 for those items.
- your monitor might be an inexpensive 17" from Tigerdirect. Add another $150. Add $200 for the cheapest 20" monitor if you want to match the iMac spec.
- you decide that you would really like to hear the audio from itunes and attach a cheap set of speakers on sale from Futureshop. Add another $20.
- you realize that 80 GB is not nearly enough to store all your music, photos and downloaded video as well as the software you have installed. You get a cheap external drive from Costco. Add $140 for a 500 GB WD My Book.
- Your Mac Mini just went from $649 (before tax) to $989. If you splurged on anything else like the "high end" mini, bigger/nicer monitor, nicer speakers, larger external drive, headphones, microphone, iMic, extra RAM etc, you are right in the ballpark of the $1299 for the first tier iMac.

Let's not fool ourselves. The mini is a great way to switch to Mac when you already own the other pieces, but if anything, I would think the mini is more expensive when you consider the price/performance against an iMac (all things considered).

I bet all the people looking at a Mac Mini already have all that stuff. They wrote those costs off as a purchase of the last system. So it is really just the 649.

I had the same too on my refurbished one. First I fell lucky.. but then I saw all the dead pixels on the display ...

If you're a consumer, who is ever satisfied with the bare minimum? You might get the bare bones to start, but then realize you want the upgrades and start building toward the iMac price point. If you are a switcher, you might just get the mini and attach it to your old stuff, but if you like the experience, the old stuff will soon be replaced with new stuff.

BTW - a lot of people re-purpose their minis to media station duties when they upgrade. That's what will happen to our kids mini when we get them a new machine. It's perfect because of size and connectivity. And why does everyone want HDMI? It does not provide a better signal than DVI. Is everyone just out of audio ports?

Just got a DVI to HDMI cable from Canadadirect.com for $10. It works great and audio is plugged into the receiver. Not so inconvenient.

But for me, the glossy screen is a deal-killer for my photo work. If I went with an iMac, I'd buy the 20" and then add on a 24" S-IPS or some such matte display 2.

The glossy display is a deal-killer for many, I think. Apple would do well do offer matte as an option, but I guess that would kill sales of mini's+Cinema Displays...

i think it would be great for Apple to offer the choice between matte and glossy display, but i doubt it will happen. i have a matte screen now, but i've done imaging work on glossy screens and the prints came out great, so i really don't understand what all the fuss is about...

correct me if i'm wrong here, but i believe there's also the environmental aspects (mercury based matte LCDs, low power consumption LEDs) that i'm sure are playing a large part in the reason why apple isn't offering matte displays anymore.

but whatever... i just REALLY want to see the apple store go down overnight and anticipate new iMacs in the morning.
