If the iMac goes LED, I will have to put them on 1/4 brightness whenever I use one.
Even with the backlight technology Apple uses in the current iMacs, I have the brightness on my display (I have a 24" iMac) turned all the way down. Way too bright otherwise. If LED is that much brighter, I'm happy I didn't wait, then.

Really happy to see the mini chugging along -still using my original G4 Mini as my main comp. It works really well (with one of those dirt-cheap USB 500 GB HDDs plugged in). :)

I would love to have an option of losing the Optical Drive in place for a second hard drive (SSD driven for the OS and Apps). The other hard drive for media. They can offer the Macbook Air superdrive through USB (and make it work of course).

Blu-Ray isn't coming since there are no proper mobile slot drives that Apple likes yet. First, it will come to the Mac Pro, then the others slowly (I'm thinking next year).

Quad-Core isn't coming to the iMac until there are Quad-Core mobile processors, so that isn't happening either.

I do not expect LED this time around. This update will likely be the following:
(1) 20" - 2.1, 2 gigs Ram, 128 VRAM, 320 HD.
(2) 20" - 2.5 (2.6 option), 2 gigs Ram, 256 VRAM, 500 HD (maybe).
(3) 24" - 2.5 (2.8 Extreme Option), 2 gigs Ram, 256 VRAM (option to go to 512), 500 HD.

Same price points, no new features. I would really love to see them build the black-backlit keyboard into the iMac keyboards, but whatever. Also, I would really love a BLACK power cable. I do not understand why Apple is still using white cables for the iMac and iPhone. Even the Macbook Air Superdrive has a white cable, WHY? It doesn't match anymore.

I really hope there's a mini update. I'd like to see 2GB RAM as standard, as you can't really escape from paying Apple extra for the RAM at the moment.

I seriously doubt they would ever drop the price, but considering its current hardware specs...the Mini is seriously overpriced.

Ya it's a bit of a joke what they have it priced at now for what you are getting. Perhaps the upgrade will fix that. They need to accommodate the bigger drives faster drives to make it work in my view.

I'm jazzed about this rumourliciousness! I have been planning to finally make the switch and after doing my initial research I settled on the mini (as I don't want my system tied to the monitor). Thankfully I held off with the inkling that a new revision was around the corner.

Penryn will make a nice addition to the Mini with the reduced power draw and less heat. Here's to hoping for 4GB memory support, improved graphics (GMA X3100?) and higher capacity HDD with 7200rpm!

I'll be picking up a pair of them...one for the wife and I. :)

Isn't it a real pain to change RAM in the mini? I would worry I would break something.

Not too difficult, a few guides on net. Sounds quite destructive when you do it though. I've done mine twice without issues (1gb then 2gb). There's an issue about effecting warranty, however if you do a good job how do they know? (so long as you keep the original ram and reinstall if it goes wrong!)

My question, would a x3100 graphics be any good for Halflife 2/XP on boot camp? (compared to a PC running with a X700 card)

it can be done

Isn't it a real pain to change RAM in the mini? I would worry I would break something.

I was reluctant to open my sole core mini as I've heard about the issues with changing RAM. Also had the G4 version earlier but never thought to try to change the RAM myself. But with the internet there are so many step by step videos I decided to go ahead. Upgraded the sole core to 2GB and it wasn't bad. In fact one guy said using the putty knife in a manner like opening a can of paint was a great analogy and it was not a problem.

If they do some of the things discussed on this thread with the mini, I will be tempted to get another one. It just seems to be a great product when applied to the right user and applications.

If they make the hoped for improvements, for a great many users, it will be a very nice solution.

As the CPU is not running as hot, we may see some slimming of the iMac, but it makes little difference to me, I think it is fine as it is.
The CPU might not be running as hot, but what about the GPU? What is the point of putting in a good graphics card if you are just going to throttle its capabilities?

WOOT! Been waiting patiently for a new iMac

I got money through my student loan to get a new iMac back in February. I have an aging 20" iMac G5 and it's on its last leg. I decided rather than buy a new iMac in Feb, I'd wait.

If you look at the product refreshes over the past couple months, you can see a pattern:

December - new Mac Pros
January - Macbook Air
February - Macbook & Macbook Pros
March - iMacs? Mac minis?

So I decided to wait until a refresh before splurging my hard earned cash. I am psyched to hear this news, it's awesome!

At least you will have a nice shinny computer to use while paying back those loans.

A mini update? Seriously? Will this be a real one, or a non-update like the last couple that will still leave it a turd compared with similar boxes?

It's pretty unbelievable that they've dragged their feet so long on faster wifi.

All models should have superdrive.

4 ram slots, preferably up to 8 gigs available.

Better integrated graphics, with hardware acceleration for h.264. And I'd KILL for dual monitor support on the mini, as far as I'm concerned that would be WAY more useful than boosted gaming performance.

Unfortunately, the case size llimits hard drives to small slow ones, it was a boneheaded move to make it too small to handle a 3.5 inch drive.

The best thing apple could do would be to dump the dumb "mini" design and go with all desktop parts and a bit larger case. They could have better optical and hard drive, more processor options - overall a way better machine for the same price or even less. Best case would be a PCI slot or two and even an open drive bay, but I'm not holding my breath.

The only thing keeping apple from dumping the mini in favor of a great, competitive desktop unit is Steve Jobs's ego. Doing that would be an admission that the mini was a mistake, and he hates to admit a mistake unless he absolutely has to.

The mini has had gigabit ethernet since the first intel units, maybe longer.

First, people want the option to buy HD movies, and right now bluray is the best option for that. Second, while you're not going to see a difference on a laptop, a 24 inch imac should support full 1080 resolution, and the mini outputs the resolution, it just needs enough horsepower and/or video card power.

What practical reason would keep a bluray drive out of a Mac Pro? Or require a "major case redesign" to get it into that tower?

I agree with your post, the mini should be a bit larger, the average user should be able to change the RAM & hard drive without a paint scraper.

The best solution would be to just use the hardware from the imac...

MacPro's came out January 8th.

I sure hope there's new iMacs tuesday!

My last ray of hope is that the iMacs are updated within the next 4 weeks:
I have been promised an iMac but if these upgrades are important i dont want to be left with an old ass Mac :(
:(

My wish: dual-link DVI on the new iMac and Mac Mini to drive a 30" display. A wish, a hope, but knowing Apple they will still want you to buy a Mac Pro to have desktop machine that can drive the displa. Using my MacBook Pro as is, is the only way I can drive my 30" Cinema HD right now, and I would like the advantage of a dedicated desktop machine to drive the display. $2000+ price for the tower is too much for me, right now

You can afford a $2k 30" screen (I can get a 46" Full HD TV at this price), but can't afford a $2k Mac Pro...

Full HD (1920x1080) isn't that big of a resolution when you're talking about really large computer displays.

Now, a 30" ACD has a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels. That's a lot. You could play Full HD in a window. :)

So, a 46" Full HD TV isn't really a valid comparison to a 30" computer display.

Hell, my 24" iMac at 1920x1200 resolution can technically fit a tiny bit more information on its screen than that 46" TV. Just the same resolution horizontally, but a few more pixels vertically. :)

How annoying it would be to burn a 50gb drive @ 1-2x.

Granted it would be annoying, but I hope you're not confusing BD 1-2x speeds with DVD 1-2x speeds.

DVD 1-2x speeds = 10-21mbit/sec
BD 1-2x speeds = 36-72mbit/sec

I don't know why people want Blu-ray.

Unless you have the 24inch you need 1080p resolution 1900x1200 (I think) to even display the blu-ray content.

False. There is no resolution requirement. You can watch it on 480i-1080p. Of course it'll look best at 1080, but it isn't required.

pSc

30" computer displays can be had for much less than $2000, so it's not much of a stretch to think a Mac mini owner might want one. In a year or two, 30" might be as common as 24" is today.

On the contrary, I hope they keep 1GB standard. Buy the upgraded RAM much cheaper from an online vendor, install it yourself.
