"within 2 weeks" eh? reckon u'll be given an updated one then? what's the normal delivery time for imacs?

I don't know whether I'll get an updated one or not(although that would be kind of cool) but the estimate time for delivery it says between the 19 or the 21 of this month, hmmmm I'm sure is just an estimate, that's all.

Expert Opinion needed!?!?!?!

Hi,

Ok so reading through all these comments looks like most people think an iMAC update is on it's way?

I am pretty new to the MAC world but really REALLY want to get rid of the cash that is in my account! Since it's now the 4th does anyone think that if we don't see an update on the 8th then Apple will wait and not bother with Penryn at all?

ANy thoughts welcome!!! I don't think I could go through another Tuesday !!!

You can give it to me.. all I need is your bank account details.. and sortcode.

Seriously though.. these 'rumours' have become a joke. Everyone and anyone can come up with rumours that are equivalent to 'I see clouds, that means it's going to rain some time in the next few weeks at some point, probably'.

This thread is just full of people using just about any indicator of anything to solidify their craving and hope for a new model that won't look or work significantly differently to the current models.

'They've taken away the NEW labels from the MacBook [Pro]' .. NO WAY! =O That MUST mean the iMacs are on the way.
'Refurbished iMacs at discount prices!' .. Cos that never happens..
'Refurbished iMacs at the top of the refurbished list!' .. Are you kidding!? You have too much time on your hands.
'The guy in the Apple store told me..' .. Your average Apple 'Genius' knows even less than your average MR reader.

If you need one, get one. If you can wait, then wait. Apple will release when they're good and ready, and your (not aimed at anyone in particular) moaning won't make it happen any quicker.

I hate it when people are so rational. You make a great point but come on there is no way they will not include the new processors in the next version.

Most people here probably won't "need" one, they just badly want an updated model. As I'm waiting for updates also, it's something I can fully understand & I guess a forum like this helps us all to share our frustration a little &, hopefully, feel a lot better for it. ;)

Also, there's not only refurbished iMacs now going at discounted prices. Apple's current "Limited Time Special Price" iMac sale are mostly non-refurb models & it's been going for a few weeks now. So updates are definitely imminent, but "imminent" in the world of Apple could mean next Tuesday or another 3 or 4 Tuesdays. Little wonder some people are getting very excited.

Yeah but if I refer you back to my analogy.. clouds often mean rain is 'imminent' too.

Even if they do release updates, which they will, eventually.. the increase in real world performance won't be noticeable to most.. if any.

I want to get an iMac too.. I've been following this thread and others for over a month. The reason I haven't got one already is so that I can make a choice when the new ones are announced whether I pay full price for something that isn't that much better than the old ones, or get the old ones for cheap. That covers my ass.

Indeed, there's unlikely to be much performance increase with these updates (probably processor bump, hard drive, RAM & VRAM), but there's just this tantalizing possibility that the 2400 & 2600 cards may be replaced with something better &, for some purposes, that would make a significant difference; particularly on non-upgradeable computers where future-proofability can be a serious concern for some consumers who aren't able to afford Mac Pros.

Just go out and buy one already! :p

I bought the entry-level iMac on Monday and I'm absolutely in love with both the machine and the software. I ummed and aaahed about waiting for the pending revisions and you know what? A new one could come out tomorrow and I wouldn't give a stuff. It's a great piece of kit now and it will be in a month of Tuesdays.

Although, the jury's still out on the Mighty Mouse- I'm not so sure about it myself... :D

Same here. I bought one about 2 - 3 weeks ago, and couldn't be happier. It's far better than any XP/Vista system I've used. I'm already getting the itch to get a second; MB Pro hopefully...;)

If you need an iMac, then go buy one.

All Penryn is going to bring to the table is lower operating temperatures (the current iMac is already quiet so I don't expect it to get any quieter even if the fans don't need to work as hard) and perhaps a few percentage points in performance if they bump up the speed.

They're not going to offer a new matte LCD panel or add eSATA or BluRay or put in a new faster GPU. It will be pretty much a pure CPU/Northbridge swap.

Spec of new iMac

Penryn isn't really the draw here, it's the potential of an updated GPU. All indicators say an update is coming pretty soon...how could they put a 512MB one in a MBP and then not in a new iMAC?

I know this probably means NOTHING but I was in a London Apple store today and the assistant said she gets training on new products about 2 days before they are due to come in.....so far she has had none. So....most likely not Tuesday for an update?

Was at BestBuy last night. They had White Macbooks with 1GB RAM on clearance [$949/NEW]. The guy said they're expecting the new iMacs and Minis sometime late April/Early May. That said I'd expect Apple and Apple stores to have them around the next 2 weeks or so...

I may jump on that Macbook....:)

A great pity about no matt screen option & that's why I'll be buying a Mini instead & then get a PC for 3D requirements, which is all a bit of a drag to say the least. Apple ought to at least give people the option of matt screens.

Not only will I not touch glossy, but these glossy screens seem to be inferior even when compared to the old white iMac screens:

Apple sued over 'inferior' iMac screens. :(

That has nothing to do with the glossy part of the screen. Apple just uses lower quality TN panels in the 20" models.

However, even though I personally wouldn't touch glossy screens regardless of any quality issues, these particular 20" glossy screens are stated as being inferior to the previous white iMac's matt screens. Don't people find this a bit odd, to say the least?

Why the northbridge?

On further review, they may not. Intel did release a new chipset - Crestline - with the mobile Penryns, but I can't find whether or not Apple moved from Santa Rosa or not when they added Penryn to the MBP. If they did not, then all it would be is a straight CPU update, perhaps...

Crestline is part of Santa Rosa. Penryn's are drop in CPU replacements for Socket P Merom's.
