What the heck did those people do for the first 25 years of home computing?

CRTs all had glass screens. Did they just suffer for years util the first LCD screens came out? I must admit I never had a problem looking at a CRT.

Were you around during that entire era? Because in fact, it was a problem, but here's why you can't just write off an apparent lack of complaints for 25 years of computing on CRTs. People didn't sit in front of their computers for 8+ hours at a time back then. Up until the mid-90s computers were part of the work place in more of a tangential way. You might sit at the computer for an hour or so and then work elsewhere. It wasn't like the mid-90s to now where people might spend an entire shift staring at a computer screen.

Now, to all those who want matte display:

iMac has a glass panel covering most of it's front side and not only the display. Even if you stick in a matte display under it, it would still appear as glossy, so they cant make an option for matte without significant redesign of the iMac's front side. Is this so hard to figure out? >.>

Right, because there's absolutely no conceivable way Apple could offer that option the way they offer it on the MacBook Pro, and we long-time customers who already pay a premium for Apple software and hardware should be grateful and just shut up and take what Steve Jobs hands down from on high.

Back then, people didn't store their entire lives in their computers, and all of their movies/TV shows. People did complain (like someone already said, they used screen shields) to reduce the glare at the workplace. But no one watched full feature films on their computers, or did movie/photo editing on their CRT's. And if they did, I bet they complained. Or maybe they didn't, because they didn't know that something better would exist soon. Did anyone complain when the first 15GB iPod came out? Now, even the 160GB iPod won't hold all my media (and thus, some complain). Things change.

Also, if I remember correctly, the majority of home computers were hidden away in basements (at least all of ours were). They weren't used in brightly-lit living rooms/kitchens like so many are today.

My plan is to wait for the new line, pick up a 2.4Ghz, 4GB of ram from crucial and a 1TB time capsule (I need a new wireless network router anyway).
I have been a PC user my whole life, this will be my first Mac:apple:. Question to you old mac hands, is this a solid plan or am I missing something?

c:\windows

Sounds like a great plan to me. Much better than buying a new Mac and finding out that the new models are released a week later.

Refurbished vs. New

ok...so i need some advise. i've been waiting to purchase a new imac (mine is the old flat panel 800mhz one.)
what i need to know is, am i better off to wait until tuesday and pay for a new one, or do I get a refurbished current model now and use the $ savings to bump up the ram??
thoughts???

Personally, I'm getting very, very close to getting one of the refurbished ones right now. If I was planning on getting a brand new one, then I'd definitely wait and see if new models come out. But I've had some great luck with Apple's refurbished items. I have a refurbished PowerMac, Apple LCD display, iBook, and iPod, and they all still work.

Ok, I guess I'm the weird one. I mean, my TV is glass and in a brightly lit room and I've never had a problem watching movies, TV, or playing video games. Weren't all TV's glass for about 50 or 60 years? I think people watched full feature films on those things, didn't they?

My home computer was a CRT up until 2007. I'm still using a CRT at work to edit videos on. (All in brightly lit rooms.)

But apparently other people have problems. Ok, I believe them. I just find it strange when others have such a big problem with something I can't replicate at all, in any situation.

Well, there's one place I can't see a screen...it's when I take my laptop out in the sun. Oh, but that's a matte LCD so I guess it only proves that direct sun is crummy for all computers!

What I mean to say is that I haven't seen a situation where a glass screen is bad AND a matte screen is ok. I've seen lots of times when both are rendered useless due to lighting, but never when one will work but the other one won't.

The Dell 2408 is higher quality than the two year old 23" ACD and can be had for $300 less. I'll be picking up two when I get my Mac Pro in March. The $600 I save will go towards increasing the ram from 2GB to 16GB. :apple:

I agree with that one, but I might still pay the extra $300 so I can get them under warranty and get the very useful FW400 ports instead of the kinda redundant and useless card reader. I wish that Dell and other manufacturers would just adopt FW and stop messing around with USB only.

Otherwise, the Dell monitors, even with there plastic creaky bezels and stands, would be a perfect addition.

I am waiting as well to get a next gen iMac to run with a Pro Tools 003.

Does anyone know or think it possible that I might be able to load 10.4.something on a next gen iMac?

Until Digi sorts out compatibility for 10.5 for ProTools LE I would be stuck with running it on 10.4.....

Ditch Pro Tools (like I did) and start using Logic (like I have) ;)

Logic 8 is a massive improvement over the previous versions, I feel. And on a 24" iMac it really is a match made in heaven.

I'll be praying for an upgraded graphics card, if not I'll just wait for nehalem imacs ;<

Tiger and Aluminum iMacs

I am waiting as well to get a next gen iMac to run with a Pro Tools 003.

I've been looking into this issue quite a bit recently. Can the current line of iMacs run Tiger? According to my experiments I just ran a few hours ago -- YES. I was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of the original system discs that came with an Aluminum iMac (before Leopard came pre-loaded), and I was able to format an external Firewire hard drive and install Tiger on it.

But will Tiger work on the new iMacs? I wouldn't place any bets on it. MAYBE they could, but I wouldn't expect it, since the next line of iMacs will have been built to support Leopard, not Tiger.

what are you talking about? of course the new iMacs can run Tiger... 10.3 is a different story, since it's not a universal binary, so won't work on intel based macs...

What's the return policy for iMacs that are 20 days old and were bought in an Apple store?
What's the policy from Apple when they update the product this way and someone just recently bought an iMac? is there any kind of update guarantee?

The price protection only lasts 14 days. After that they wont do anything. I found this out when I bought a Macbook Pro at the end of last month. I stupidly bought the midrange and lost out BIG time. I was aware of an update and was prepared to be out of pocket by a couple of hundred, I have never seen a price difference like that before. I am in the market for a new iMac so Im definitely waiting for an update to decide. I really dont know I want to give them more money though at the moment :(

i'm betting on new cinema displays instead - they are in long need of an update, but they may push them off until they can make a bigger deal about it, and do small iMac speed bumps.... ? Like wait for the ACD untill the SDK excitement has started to blow over.. who knows?! :)

Of Course Tiger will still work, thats what the Aluminum iMac came with, preinstalled...

Thank you all so far for the comments. I am still not entirely sure based on what is being said.. and thus why I asked.

If they are upgrading the chips and possibly redesigning the motherboard to conform with the chips, then they would likely alter the OS to fit that architecture, rendering previous generations of OS incompatible.

Any further insight.

Oh and thank you but No.. Logic is not for me..

I have been using Pro Tools for 12 years and will not change. The Digi 003 I want to run is a music pre-production room which is an annex to my main room with a proper tower PT HD setup for mixing and post production

I bet the summer update of the iMac will have Blu-Ray drives. I wish it was possible for this Tuesday's update. I am ready to have that drive in my Mac now that the war is over. Even if it is Apple's trademark crippled combo drive.
