info from apple on return n refund policy:

Please note that Apple does not permit the return of or offer refunds for the following products:

Product that is custom configured to your specifications, including personalized products
...

Wow... thank you so much, iPhil. You freaking saved me $2600! (Don't ask me for a cut of that savings, though ;) )

About time, those Merom chips are so obsolete. Penryn is already getting long in the tooth.

Are you adding apple ram and upping the HD to 750GB on the iMac? You know you can get RAM much cheaper from OWC or crucial, or almost anywhere?

Likewise, $900 for the Apple 23" display is steep. You can do much better elsewhere. Same with the $500 Apple charges for 2x1GB of RAM for the pros.

I chose 1GB of RAM and bought 4GB on OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/53IM2DDR4GBK/). Will that be just as good as Apple RAM? And I chose the 1TB HD, because I don't want to deal with the hassle of upgrading it myself (and possibly voiding the warranty). What do you think?

I'll buy one for my office coworker who just threw out his IBM. Although it will probably only bump the processor and maybe the RAM. Nothing too special, but an update still.

You are rich enough to buy your fellow co-worker an entire computer?!

The mini won't get updated

Based on past observation, Apple uses the Mini to run out their stocks of laptop components.

Apple will only update the Mini when they run out of Merom chips.

Depending on relative sales, this could be a while.

Someone mentioned warranty repairs. Laptop processors don't get replaced under warranty - it's not worth it as they're soldered down. Apple will give you a new laptop or Mini (or replace the entire mobo/processor if they have any left) if somehow your processor blows while under warranty.

When the macbooks / MBP / iMacs move up to the Montevina mobo in the summer, Apple will again use the last of their Santa Rosa mobos in the Mac Mini.

I think it is good business for Apple to consistently and systematically release updates through out the year.

In contrast, can you think of ANY major hardware/software companies that have come close to making the innovative progress that Apple has in the last 12 months?

Dell or Any PC Manufacturer? No
Microsoft? No
Sony? No
Samsung? No

I think you would be hard pressed to come up with a single name that could hold its own against Apple.

Mhmm.. We are actually on the same page.. I think it is great for Apple, and I am sure we are all excited for them too. Though, the frequent updates are never pleasing to those who cannot afford to buy apple products so often and do not want their product to feel obsolete. Overall though, Apple's progress and success has been quite spectacular and people will soon get used to the many product updates and will grow to find approval and excitement rather than disappoint.

return?

I just bought an iMac in mid-January. Is it worth returning it for the new one if it comes out tuesday? Also, what is the return policy (90 days or 30 days?). My iMac is having a couple minor issues that might constitute as a need to replace it with a new one (iChat issues and a frequent shut down problem).

This would be great, I would like to buy a 24" inch but the update is really close. :D

Yep, just bought a 20 inch 2.4GHz a month ago, now we are seeing new ones (maybe). Hehe, oh well, thats the way technology is I suppose! I love my iMac now though, I put 4GB of RAM in it, its very fast. I get 35-50 FPS in UT3 under XP, not bad. UT2004 on the other hand gets anywhere from 150 to 400 FPS :-D

Good question, though I do not know. On the iPods the local Apple store says 14 days unopened.

I imagine the two upper models with get bumped to the 2.5 or 2.6 chips that the MBP's are using. There is also a 2.8 Extreme Penryn, so that has to be offered to keep up with the last iMac. 2 Gigs of Ram standard definitely. I doubt Apple will be giving for hard drive space yet, probably will stay at 320. New graphics card should happen, with the BTO up to a 512.

That's what I expect anyway. Nothing huge, no Quad-Core or Blu-Ray yet.

You would think that Apple as a company would have a better handle on their inventory control then have to use up unused processors. I'm not saying that your explanation is wrong, you are probably right, it just seems like they would be able to project close to what they need based on sales figures and release dates.

Huh? Dell has the latest quad-core Penryns, Blu-ray, cablecard HD tuners and the latest graphics cards. Apple is great at software, design and overall computing experience but PC makers always have the latest, coolest hardware and raw power.

What you have now and what the 'potential' update 'might' be....

80%? Are you sure? I'm canceling my order right now then... crap. :( You're really certain? (Your post count leads me to believe you are!)

Is so insignificant that you will NEVER tell the DIFFERENCE, so why bother to return your iMac? And guess what, even the new updated imac is already outdated!!!

i am looking into my magic ball, and I say....

Yes, but regardless, I canceled the $2,600 2.8ghz iMac order. If I'm going to spend that much money, I'd like to wait and take the risk that a matte screen will be introduced. I live in "Sunny" San Diego in a small, all white apartment with LOTS of windows... I can at least dream that Apple cares enough to offer matte for us folks. The step between this iMac and an equal Mac Pro+23" Apple Cinema Display is about a $1,200 difference. :(

There will be NO matt screen on any new iMac! AS mentioned the glossy screen glare is way over rated! My studio as 5 floor to celling windows and the sun is on this side of the house most of the day, even in winter! No ISSUES with the glossy screen...and besides ALL CRT"s before the matt LCD screens were glossy and I NEVER heard anyone bitch about them!

Is the potential for a matte screen option so "insignificant"? Or updated graphics?

Blah, blah, blah.

It's not an issue for you, so therefore it must not be an issue for anyone else.

Two words - price drop. Or at least that's what I hope for. It might sound unreasonable, but it's worth it. Also on a list of wishes:

LCD Screen
Matte Screen
Big-up'ed Video Card
Cheaper price on Hard Disk
Lower heat output with the Penryn
and while I'm talking about dreams... 30" model plz? :D

I'm sure SOMEBODY has noticed this, but I just wanted to bring it to your attention. Apple currently has "Limited Time Special Pricing" in the Refurbished store for Aluminum iMacs, and AL iMacs only. This could be a sign, could just be a random sale.

I currently own an AL iMac with AppleCare. Every so often, I the same pixel stuck on a sky blueish color. If I sent it back to Apple (if they accepted it) would they replace the screen or give me a new machine? If they would give me a new machine, I may have the perfect excuse to send it in if they update.

They probably won't accept it for one stuck pixel. Try jscreenfix on it overnight.

Since its going to be unlikely that Apple will offer a matte screen option on the updated iMacs. Is it a good idea to operate a new iMac with the gloss glass off permanently?

Referbs are the way

It looks like when the new MB and MBP came out the referb models went from a 18% discount to a 28% discount. Currently the referb imacs are selling at a 18% discount if they increase this to 28% when the new line comes out it will be a great deal. A Refurbished iMac 24-inch 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 1mb, 320 hard Drive is selling for $1499. With a 28% price cut (off the full price) that is like $1273. Add 4GB from crucial.com for $110 and you are out $1383 for a great computer. For most people this is a solid computer.

The way I look at is, if you want a powerful computer you have to buy a Mac Pro. The small incremental bump from a 2.4 to a 2.8 won’t be noticed. The Penryn new chip set won’t make a huge difference to the performance (1-8%) The new Penryn chip will give you a 16% increase in battery life compared to the Merom, but on a iMac this is not feature.

The only realistic way to make a computer faster is to get a lot of RAM or a major architecture system change like a quad processor or a much faster Front side bus (with faster RAM), perhaps a faster hard drive 7200rpm. Performance for most people is limited to getting data off the harddrive into memory (RAM). You want to spend money on anything that speeds up this operation. More RAM = less trips to the harddrive to get stuff. Faster harddrive = faster loading and writing of temp data. I have always used a PC so I might be missing something as I have no real expierence with a Mac.

As for hard drive space, just be smart about storing data on external devices like Time Capsule.

My plan is to wait for the new line, pick up a 2.4Ghz, 4GB of ram from crucial and a 1TB time capsule (I need a new wireless network router anyway).
I have been a PC user my whole life, this will be my first Mac:apple:. Question to you old mac hands, is this a solid plan or am I missing something?

advice needed

ok...so i need some advise. i've been waiting to purchase a new imac (mine is the old flat panel 800mhz one.)
what i need to know is, am i better off to wait until tuesday and pay for a new one, or do I get a refurbished current model now and use the $ savings to bump up the ram??
thoughts???

Overrated to you. It's your opinion. Many others disagree.

My studio as 5 floor to celling windows and the sun is on this side of the house most of the day, even in winter! No ISSUES with the glossy screen...

Good for you. Again, that's your experience. Eyesight varies from human to human. See, we're not all alike, and there are quite a few of us who disagree with that opinion.

and besides ALL CRT"s before the matt LCD screens were glossy and I NEVER heard anyone bitch about them!

Are you kidding? How old are you? Were you even around during the height of the CRT days? The latter CRTs (circa 2001) did in fact have anti-glare coating on the screen to cut reflection, but in the mid-90s, there was an entire industry catering to this problem. It was commonplace to see anti-glare hoods on the displays or to have anti-glare sheets applied to the screen. People often complained of eyestrain or headaches caused by glare and reflection. You are demonstrably wrong in claiming that nobody bitched about CRT reflection.

I love Apple's products, but boy do I get fed up with this knee-jerk defense of everything they do.

I knew it.

Apple's got the iMac's deeply discounted in the Refurb section JUST like they did with the MacBooks. If you hold on, you can get an even greater deal on current iMac's the day they release the new iMacs. I picked up a 2.4 MacBook Pro, 15" for $1649.00! True I don't have the latest and greatest but I do have the tried and true along with enough cash to buy a Time Capsule with too.

It's only obsolete when you stop using it!

Apple RAM? OMG do they have you suckered in!

Please. I have an iMac 24". Paid $150 for a 4 Gig kit from datamemorysolutions.com. If you can unscrew two screws and push a card in a slot then you're qualified to do your own upgrade. Apple made it vitually idiot proof. Just don't leave plugged in and hit the power button while sliding in the RAM. And when you pop out the "APPLE RAM" you'll notice a no-name brand of RAM chip – Yamma-Gotcha RAM products!

iMac G5

I was thinking of buying a portable, but it seems like a new iMac would be even better for me, as I am not travelling THAT much for professional reasons nowadays...

However, I would need some advice from you guys: what to do with my wonderfully reliable iMac G5 afterwards? Any ideas?

You could reformat the drive, clean it up if it needs it and donate it to your local school? Church? or some other needy organization.
