I don’t get it. The supposed benefits don’t outweigh the real negatives for me.
The mini had some good trade offs and I could see the argument.
To me this is a device looking for a problem rather than a solution to a problem.
You’re definitely 100% right. The supposed benefits don’t outweigh the real negatives for you. Could it still be possible that for someone this is a model they like and that suits them?

Second, the single speaker. Really? Are there really people who need stereo sound from their iPhone? What the hell are they doing? Do they not have headphones? Do they not have iPads or TVs? Are they watching movies on trains with the sound coming out in the iPhone like jerks? Does iPhone stereo sound even work in any meaningful way? The only way this is an issue is if I can’t get the volume I need from the speaker when I’m using it.

People listening to stuff (or on speakerphone) in public drives me nuts. If it were up to me, other than the little speaker needed for calls when the phone is to your ear, I say do away with the speakers altogether! :p

Oh, and stay off my damned lawn!

I'm taking a different tack this time. It just so happens I'm taking a day off on Friday, completely coincidental to the iPhone release. I'll head to my local Apple Store that morning to try out all of the phones, having pre-ordered none of them. If the reviews don't reveal any glaring deficiencies and I like the feel of the Air on release day I'll probably get it since they should have some in stock (pref: Sky Blue 256 GB). I also ordered a generic polycarbonate bumper case from Amazon to use with it when the time comes. If I don't like it I'll return both the phone and case and I'll carry on with my 15 Pro, no big deal.

The speaker issue is so polarizing. Seriously.

  • You've never waited in the car watching a few minutes of video while your significant other grabs something?
  • You've never been on a lunch break, walking outside, and a call comes in?
  • You've never wanted to show your significant other, a friend, or colleague a funny video or clip?

There are so many instances from conference calls to bedside speaker where stereo audio comes in handy.

I get it. Many people are huge introverts. But most people are not nutjobs on riding the subway with volume at full blast.

I agree. On the other hand you can do all that stuff with mono speaker, no?

Yes, but it's like eating spaghetti with a spoon. If you've used a fork before, you might not want to go back.

A lot of people appreciate stereo speakers, or else Apple would have deleted it a long time ago with the 3.5mm jack to save space.

How would you know the battery falls short ?
Apple did say "all day battery" which is more than enough for me being a casual user.

Camera falling short ?
Not for me - I don't use it much and when I do it's a point and shoot like and instamatic.
I’m alluding to perceptions. I’m buying the Air because it has everything I need and the look I want. No short falls for me but for the consumer that’s more aligned with public opinion, maybe.

Yep - and for those who must have stereo speakers maybe the Air isn’t for them. Personally so long as it works as a speaker phone when on hold or on Google Meet mono’s going to be fine.

Air is a feeling product. By that I mean that people will only truly understand it once they see, hold, and use it in person. Consumers are buying for a specific feeling that the Air will evoke, not specs on paper.
Yes, once a consumer holds an Air and feels the new form factor, they will buy it and many more will follow.

That's a little dramatic. Especially considering iPhones don't have great stereo separation to begin with. Heck, three of your points are varying examples of phone calls - do those even have stereo sound?

I imagine the vast majority of people can tolerate mono while idly scrolling tiktok while they wait a few minutes for their SO. If they can't - Tim also sells AirPods. And other phones.

80% of my listening is talk show podcasts. 10% is music, the other 10% streaming video. I'll get by with a combination of the iPhone speaker, earbuds, Bluetooth speakers, AirPlay, and iPhone mirroring - probably the most slept on way to play audio from the iPhone.

Yes, many people notice it. Separation is separation. It's actually quite decent in my opinion.

It's like saying, the Air is only a couple mm thinner than iPhone 17. That's not a big difference anyway.

Some people can tolerate a few mm thicker iPhone. Others can tolerate mono audio.

Being able to operate a phone one-handed.

Yes.

But I would be surprised if among them are a very large number of users who find it more difficult to use because of 2.3mm (0.09) inches more or less in thickness.

(Especially cause you can’t use them one-handed very well anyway)
All I can tell you is, I remember having the 6+.
Very, very similar dimensions to today’s Pro Max, felt absolutely massive in terms of size…
But the thing was so light it felt like nothing. You could toss it from hand to hand, drop it in your pocket and it still felt like nothing.
That phone was 172G.

The 17 Pro Max is 233 G and believe me, if it’s anything like my 221 G 15 Pro Max, it feels like a brick in the pants and certainly aren’t tossing it from hand to hand like you could the 6+.

The iPhone Air is 1.3 MM thinner and 7 G lighter than even the 6+..
It’s only 21 G heavier than the SE 2 and 3.
It’s closer in weight to the 13 Mini than even the 16+.

I had the 6+ on day one. After a 2-month honeymoon period, I ditched it for the regular 6 because I kept dropping the darned thing.

Coming from the 112g iPhone 5S, the 6+ was freakin' heavy. Granted, phones nowadays are more like bricks.

I’m basically the same way, and the fact is that the vast majority of talk show podcasts and streaming video from YouTube or TikTok is mono anyway.
The fact that there is only one speaker is a bit of a bummer no denying that, but is it really something that will impact usage?
I don’t think so, especially at more than 50% volume the iPhone speakers already don’t really sound great to begin with.

Too each there own if i did care for having the largest screen, the best cameras & speakers. I would chose the Air over the Pro max in a heart beat. I actually love the design of the Air better than the pro max, and will miss the polished sides of the pro phones.

1. Always use my AirPods for this.
2. Always have my AirPods in while walking outside.
3. Phone screens are too small for this - I always use a computer or iPad instead.

I never use the speaker in my phone for anything other than my morning alarm. Same for my wife and kids. Every iPhone speaker ever made sounds like absolute garbage compared to my AirPods Pro, and it only takes about 2 seconds to put them in - why would I ever use the phone's speaker instead?

The Air‘s attractiveness (apart from aesthetics) is of emotional nature. It’s this very special Apple feeling (again). I think quite a few people missed it. Me, too. Rational and reasonable is not everything.
And making this reckless, irrational decision is the most exciting Apple purchase I’ve made in YEARS.👏🏼
