Gee, kind of looks like the reservation e-mail....

Oh and this....
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/cell-phones/day-long-iphone-3g-s-buying-saga-ends-in-success/1475

In case you don't want to click the link...
"Pre-authorization: A process you go through online after selecting the Buy Now option that asks you all about your AT&T account, what phone options and prices you have based on your account details, what data/text message plan you will be buying, and what store you will be going to. You receive an email confirmation telling you the next step is to visit your nearest Apple store to complete the buying process. "

Hence the first come first serve.....

Yes, because znet.com - a fine source of Apple authority...

I tell ya, this is why I'm going to an Apple store and not an ATT store. Completely different experiences.

if your reservation is confirmed (you can check in the apple store app on your iPhone) - then they will hold your phone for the entire day.

anyone who says otherwise does not have a reservation and looking for any reason to cast doubt on us lucky ones.

confirmed by several different Apple stores in my area, and most importantly, by the one I reserved mine at. :D

My local Apple Store (Carlsbad, Ca.) told me that since my name is on their list, they will have a phone with my name on it until the close of business on June 24th. The Apple rep said that they attach a yellow stickie with each "reserved" customers name to the actual iPhone box...:)

The fine print is in reference to pre-authorization by AT&T. If you show up and it turns out you're ineligible to get the phone at the reduced price, they are saving their hides. This is what the Apple store manager told me.

Same here...I was told that this disclaimer pertains to "pre-authorization" customers only who are subject to "final authorization" by AT&T...they (Apple Store rep) told me it does not include "reservations" for existing upgrade approved AT&T customers...

assuming they do not run out prior to you getting there. I am just trying to warn everyone, get there early

sorry, but.. completely and utterly incorrect.

the reservation holds the phone there for the entire day. they will not run out of phones if you had a reservation because THAT'S WHY YOU MADE THE RESERVATION. they will not sell your reserved phone until the next day.

you do not need to get there early in fear of not getting your phone. stop worrying people who don't know better.

Get there when you wish...

Truth of the matter no one knows. The fine print is ambiguous and I have been told by numerous Apple store employees (at two different locations here in NY) that reservations are still on a first come first served basis. Doesnt make sense to me either...

It's been discussed in many threads and already answered in this thread.. but the "Pre-Authorization" and "Reservation" are 2 different things.

Anyways I called my Apple Store here in San Diego and I was told reservations will be held until EOB. Like others have mentioned it may vary from store to store so your best bet is to call and ask.

Ok, IF you have a legit confirmed reservation, you will get your phone on June 24th unless there is some shipping snafu that is beyond the control of the store. I am sorry that some people keep getting told the wrong things. Pre-authorization and reservation is two different things, and the first come first served refers to the pre-authrization ONLY.

Also, to give you an idea of the magnitude of all of this, my Apple store received over 1100 reservations. They are expecting to get all of those units plus a good amount for walk ins (likely around the same as the reservation amount, but wont know for sure till the day of). There will be two lines. All employees are required to work that day. They will do activations in the store. The store even has machines now that allow them to transfer all contacts and information from ANY phone onto your new iPhone, just like they can do in the AT&T store. There are only two of these in the store though, so the wait may be awhile for this. Employees will get there at 5AM and have 2 hours of training prior to open at 7am. That is about all the information I can give.

Oh yeah, and the word on the white iphone is production problems and don't know when they will be available. :(

I called an Apple store and they told me the same thing. They'll hold it.
I also asked for the disclaimer and they said it has to do with AT&T, just in case you haven't paid your bill, it gives them an out. Something to that effect.

Either way, I'm going early.

Pre-Authorization vs Reservation

Hi guys!

I spoke with(multiple) of the managers at Apple HQ and this is what the told me.

Pre-Authorization:
This is a "back-up" thing that they did, so if you passed the AT&T Eligibility check, but where unable to get any further (like many people did), this is what is called a Pre-Authorization. This does not guarantee a phone. (Also, if you have withstanding charges on AT&T bill such as late payments, something like that.)

Reservation:
This is what happens when you've completed all the steps from the Apple site successfully. You know if you did this when they asked you to login, choose plans, as well as chose a store after having all the info processed on both AT&T and Apple's sides. This guarantees a phone until the store closes.

The "Pre-auth does not guarantee phone availability..." text was from the same template of the email dynamically sent. That's why it appears on both Pre-Auth emails as well as Reservation emails. Also, I highly advise you call your Apple Store and confirm their reservation (and ask them if there really is a phone set aside for just you, if you don't believe me).

Hopefully this clears up confusion :)

Yeah - however you know someone will come by with the inevitable BUT ...

Some people love to stir it up - gives them a sense of power?

As usual, we are all getting different answers. I spoke to Apple to and got a completely different answer. I didn't go through the plan portion and the email I received says specifically, "Please note that your reservation will be held until close of business on June 24." and "Thanks for reserving your iPhone. It will be here June 24th".

i made a sucessful reservation for 1 with intent to get a 2nd in store to sign up under a new family plan. will they let me get the 2nd even though my confirmation email says 1, but has the family plan selected?

I'm sorry to ask this but why did you just not order 2 when you signed up with the new family plan?

alright, im sure that im beating a dead horse here, but im still confused.

I am not an at&t customer, but the day the iphone was announced i called att and while i didnt establish an account because i wanted to do that when i got the iphone, i did go through the credit check and got approved and all that. the rep told me that the approval stays on file for 30 days and its the same system that would be used by att or apple/radio shack/best buy etc.

I got the confirmation email to pick up in the apple store, but since im not an existing att customer does that mean i just got a pre-authorization not a reservation?

my reservation(or whatever it is) is for the 5th ave apple store in NYC so im going to go a few hours before 7 anyway, but just wondering if any of you could help me clear this up.

Thanks

Well, just answered my own question by calling the Apple store, hopefully this info helps you guys out too.

I asked him if he had a hard list, he didnt say yes or no but he asked for the email that is associated with my itunes account. I gave him the email and he said "yes, you are in the system" and read which phone i had ordered and everything and said that itd be there with my name.

After that, I asked him if theyre really holding them the whole day or if i should come early anyway. He said to definitely come early and that they would be doing 2 lines, one for people with reservations and one for everyone else.

Now while this obviously isnt concrete information, I asked him if I came an hour or 2 before 7 and have a reservation if ill be ok and he said he definitely thinks that its be fine. Also, take note that this is for the 5th ave apple store so it sounds pretty good if he would tell me that since i know its going to be a zoo there.

Hopefully this info helps you guys out and I would definitely call your store and see if they have your reservation in their system on your itunes account.

If you received a reservation confirmation email, you should have a phone reserved for you...however, because you are not yet an AT&T customer your purchase is still dependent on "final authorization" by AT&T (this is where the CYA "disclaimer" actually "covers Apple's azz as they cannot "guarantee" you'll walk out of the store with a phone until AT&T gives final authorization).
Also, because some that DID in fact receive reservation confirmation emails were STILL not on their local stores "list", I would call the store and have them check that you are indeed on their "list"...

I'll be heading to SF Flagship store with reservation. I think one reason to get there early is that at some point, they'll call it a day and cut the line to ensure all people in line will be done with putchasing and activation. Also who knows what's gonna happen to their server that handles activation. Especially us West coast will be starting the day later than the rest of the us, the servers will be under crazy heavy load to start with, then the geek-packed (myself included) sf bay area will hit the faithful 7am. I have no faith in Apple/AT&T servers at all.

Alrighty then...nevermind my earlier post...:D

I went to the apple store to buy an iPod shuffle today, i asked about my name on the "list" to make sure it was there. The guy came back out and said "no, I didnt see it on there, you better get here early" I panicked a little, then he laughed and said "just kidding, you where in the system, we will hold it for you until the end of the day the 24th" I got a good laugh out of it.
