Agreed. I think $30/mo is a fair price for unlimited, completely portable internet access. Though it would be nice to have a tethering option w/ the $30 plan... but that's an Apple issue.

I'm sure Apple could tether the iPhone to Mac's relatively easy and PCs probably wouldn't be much more difficult.

It's really an AT&T issue - if available, tethering would cost you $65 for data per month.

I really want a Porsche 911 GT3 RS - some people might think the price is reasonable but it doesn't fit other peoples budget. Lets start a petition to drive the price down to an affordable $20,000!

I was just going to post about the exact same thing, haha... you beat me to it ;)

Anyway, welcome to capitalism people. Things cost money and not everyone can afford everything. The iPhone is a luxury item, NOT a necessity item... deal with it!

Now that they're allowing student/corporate discounts, AT&T's voice, text, and data plans have become as reasonable (or even more reasonable) than its competition (i.e. Verizon).

To be fair, folks, T-Mobile and Sprint are not AT&T's competition...Verizon is. T-Mobile and Sprint charge less because their networks aren't as great - in fact, T-Mobile can't even handle 3G.

Just wondering what is tethering? i keep hearing it.

I heard that gas stations will lower the price of fuel to $2.00 per gallon specifically for the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

Bluetooth tethering is the capability of establishing a link between your phone and another device (laptop, gps, etc) via bluetooth so that the other device can use the phone's data connection. While not as desirable with the original iPhone since EDGE isn't very fast, the option to tether a laptop to the iPhone 3G appeals to more people.

i see. thats what i thought it was i heard it before.

a blackberry personal data account is 30 dollars with a plan or 60 with tethering to a computer

same with the other smartphone plans..i don't see how this is ridiculous pricing or too expensive. If you cannot afford the 10 dollar price hike a month then maybe you shouldn't be worrying about owning an iphone

I understand why the data plans expensive, BUT no reason why the regular minute plans have to be SO expensive...

I don't think their rates are ridiculous at all to be honest. Now Rogers, their plans were ludicrous.

If you want iPhone's rate plan to drop to a lower price youre going to have to change all att plan prices. to do that you are going to have to change the competitions prices to give them the edge. To do that I guess you'd have to have more power than a few full names listed in a forum. So yeah, the prices are way more than they could and should be (for cellphones in general), but better prices are important and will happen. It'll just take awhile for someone to put it into play.

That's like complaining about the price of gas when you can afford a cadillac. If you can't afford it then don't buy it.

Hey everyone I'm willing to start a petition on the price of the data for at&t. I know how some people might think its reasonable but it doesn't fit other peoples budget. Also, with the new iphone coming out, youre going to need to get the unlimited data with it which some people might not even need. This is what they did with last years Iphone by bringing it down to 20$ and including 200 sms not because it was edge network but because you HAD to get it to use your iphone. I'm saying we are Americans and when we are not happy with something we should do something about it!!!

Sorry dude, I can't sign your petition, because if I didn't want to pay that price I wouldn't get an iphone or go with Att. If you want cheap go with Sprint/ Instinct all you can eat everything 99 bucks, its the best deal out there. I have played with the Instinct, and it was awesome I would get the beast in a second, if the iphone 3g weren't right around the corner. Damn my thunbs hurt (BB 8703e) I can't wait till iphone 3G.

They offer student discounts? Do you know how much the student discount is?

depends on your school's agreement...each school is different. Some get voice and data service discounts...others just get equipment discounts (like me)....and I believe only the service discounts apply to the iPhone...no equipment discounts. There's a thread about it around here somewhere.

sorry to say if your a new tmobile customer it's not much cheaper...I'm paying $74.35 a month for my sidekick lx with unlimited data...and I don't even use the data because the net on the sidekick is bloody awful!

Well that might be true but no ones going to be waiting for 2-3 years. Let's just hope competition among other carriers will force the iphones data plan to go down. Let's wait until the iphone killer comes out. But honestly i know this is going to be hard to say but i want everyone on mac rumors whos reading this not to buy an iphone on july 11. Lets boycott the sale of the iphone and hopefully they'll bring down the price for us.

Uhh, you're crazy. I'm not so crazy about the plans either, but it's an iPhone. What do you expect? I'm gonna be first in line for that anyway...

Although I don't think we're getting a "raw" deal compared to other smartphones, the iPhone and some of the iclones out there are bringing smartphone functionality to the masses. And as such, I think AT&T had an opportunity here to set a precedent for lower smartphone data prices sold in higher volumes of phones, and they didn't.

I am hoping that will happen soon with one of the major carriers with a true smartphone (downloadable apps) in the near future, because many people *are* still priced out of smartphones because of the plans. I myself being an Apple freak am willing to make the sacrifice of course and sign up, but I do hear many people at work saying how wonderful it is, but that they don't need those services bad enough to sign up for an expensive plan.

$30 is the same as other smart phones, so I say that's fine. Though, unlike other smart phones, with the iPhone you are required to pick a data plan with the 2 year contract, and it's unknown if you can remove it at will with the 3G iPhone. So you'd think, for making it required, they could have added some kind of discount, like a $25 plan, or tethering as someone suggested.

And $30 doesn't seem that bad for a device that can transfer so much data. I think the only ATT data option for my non-smart phone is more, a Sony Ericcson W810i walkman, is a whopping $35, but it's some bundle of media features that includes text I think, but again, not other data option. Right now, a little news browsing has done 0.23 megs of data, which without a plan translates to $2.30.

I don't use data for a Ericcson much, and a no data plan works the best, but I hate how ATT only offers a no data plan at $10 per megabyte, or a whopping $35 a month, nearly doubling your bill for a reg phone that doesn't do much data,. And the phone has a large button that takes you to the media net front page which gets hit all the time in my pocket. Making it almost unavoidable to end up with a $1 data charge a month without even using it. One time I pulled the phone out and found it 6 pages into the net. My phone has no games because just downloading it to the phone would cost more than the game itself, so I only check headline news now and then.

I am going to start a petition for them to charge more as I don't want to share the network with a bunch of cheap people.

I am with you.

If we are going to be petitioning to make things affordable that is the only thing worth worrying about.

Tell me where to sign up.
