I found a phone with a cheaper data plan:

listen. you people are being brainwashed. your being led to think that 30$ a month is alright to pay for the data but you know what else you can do with that 30$ a month your paying for your data? you could be feeding a child in africa or saving a dog at the pound or ending world hunger. att is the tyrant here and there just trying to eat whatever greens there is in our wallet. we must end this!!

I don't see how this is any different from say the $45 I pay for Broadband internet, or the $65 I pay Direct TV, etc.

I don't like paying for those either, but it's what they cost...

Fine. YOU can be enlightend and stay home on Friday.

I on the other hand, am a sheep. I will happily baaaaaaaah my way to the Apple Store (or AT&T store if they have them in the stock when I show up) on Friday morning.

And then I'll be a sheep with an iPhone. A happy sheep too, because I wasn't behind you in line. :D

$30 a month is more than acceptable for me on 3G data. In fact I pay TWICE that for my 3G laptop Connect card. And given that I don't have to pay a red cent when I'm traveling to hotels and Starbucks locations where you must pay to use the WiFi, the data card price is worth every red cent, and more justifies itself in cost compared to the money I'd shell out for WiFi.

Sorry, WiFi isn't free everywhere. And the free WiFi is often overburdened anyway.

i am willing to pay the 30 bucks since it is billed as an unlimited data service. i would be first in line to sign the petition if att tried to do tier pricing, like the folks up north. i would not even get an iphone if it was not unlimited. i hate tiered and throttling, it goes against everything the internet is about.

good luck though with your petition and sorry to hear you are not satisfied with the proposed billing.

I must agree to a point. Has anyone who is complaining ever used anyone else's service? $30 is still on the "okay" side of pricing for data on phones. I used to pay $50/month (2 years ago) for Blackberry EMAIL service. $30 is not too bad.

I dont think the rate plan is all that bad.....

I swear I'm going to just reiterate what many logical individuals have already said in this post and on these boards, but I need to get in my venting corner and just go with it...

To those who are complaining about the supposed "increase" in data costs associated with the iPhone 3G, get off your soapbox because, in actuality, not many are going to listen. I'm all for solidarity as the OP seems to be asking for in the first post, but for genuine, truly meaningful problems. To "unify" in the face of what is, in reality, reasonable, fair data costs, is bull****. I'm tired of individuals who feel entitled to get what they want; ironically, we reprimand children who demonstrate such behavior when they throw tantrums. To hear adults express the very same "gimme gimme gimme" attitude is disheartening. The "unification" you speak of only sounds like a pathetic attempt to strong-arm a company that is actually offering a reasonable deal into submitting to your needy, unjustified demands. It is not often that I feel a major corporation is being reasonable with consumers, but with the iPhone 3G, I have little to complain about.

/(sorry) end rant.

p.s.--the extra money we're spending could otherwise be used to solve world hunger? That's interesting; something tells me that if the average iPhone owner saved that amount, a charity fund would not be the intended target of that difference. Just a thought.

Why would any company do that? They're in business to make money. They built an infrastructure (and keep improving it) and need subscriber fees to do so. How about just paying for the plan or skipping the iPhone?
Succinctly put! :)

To the OP. Seriously, if the plan costs to much in your opinion, then vote with your hard earned dollars and don't get one. If enough people follow your lead, AT&T may adjust their plan to get more customers, or cancel if there are not enough customers. I would expect that neither of these will happen.

$30 is the same as other smart phones, so I say that's fine. Though, unlike other smart phones, with the iPhone you are required to pick a data plan with the 2 year contract, and it's unknown if you can remove it at will with the 3G iPhone. So you'd think, for making it required, they could have added some kind of discount, like a $25 plan, or tethering as someone suggested.

And $30 doesn't seem that bad for a device that can transfer so much data. I think the only ATT data option for my non-smart phone is more, a Sony Ericcson W810i walkman, is a whopping $35, but it's some bundle of media features that includes text I think, but again, not other data option. Right now, a little news browsing has done 0.23 megs of data, which without a plan translates to $2.30.

I don't use data for a Ericcson much, and a no data plan works the best, but I hate how ATT only offers a no data plan at $10 per megabyte, or a whopping $35 a month, nearly doubling your bill for a reg phone that doesn't do much data,. And the phone has a large button that takes you to the media net front page which gets hit all the time in my pocket. Making it almost unavoidable to end up with a $1 data charge a month without even using it. One time I pulled the phone out and found it 6 pages into the net. My phone has no games because just downloading it to the phone would cost more than the game itself, so I only check headline news now and then.

This is what im trying to say why should we be forced to buy the data?? what if i wont be using it but maybe just the text?? maybe i dont want unlimited??? anyways..there should be more options. definitely way more options just so that it could fit my budget because the thing is im not poor i consider myself middle class and im just trying to find the best way to save money and enjoy the beauty of the iphone. i know i really dont need one but its something that i would use alot. so it could be something i rellle relle want.
anyways.

i like turtles.

Look at the iPhone's home-screen. It's such an internet-centric device that, if you didn't have an unlimited plan and were out of a hotspot, you could end up ranking up a lot of data charges on accident (remember, AT&T charges by the kilobyte). Forced unlimited data is safer; but at least AT&T isn't forcing the unlimited voice plan, as well.

i see. well you bring a good point. ive noticed that as well. whatever im not going to argue, one thing that would be nice is the cost reduction of text because that would be nice to have both data and text.

You are not forced to buy data. You are not forced to buy anything.

To use the iPhone you buy the package that is necessary to use with it.

That is all. You can choose not to buy it, or you can choose to buy it. No forcing.

no bro...you dont understand...theres a guy right next to me pointing a gun to my head forcing me to buy the new iphone...what do i do now??

im not an AT&T user... but honestly.... suck it up

if you dont like the plans (with the exception of candians and a few other countries) not buy the iPhone.

you starting a petition to stop ferrari from charging $250,000 and up for their cars cause you can't afford them? If you can't afford it..... DON'T BUY IT. The data price is in line with other AT&T phones and phones from other carriers...

What is wrong with you people??????!!!!!

I am blown away by the hostility this guy has met trying to do one simple thing..... LOWER PRICES. Where do you people get the idea that lower prices would be a bad thing in any way. I am very willing to pay the new prices for the iphone 3g, that doesn't mean I wouldn't like them lowered.

Why wouldn't you want lower prices... and why would you flame someone just for trying to lower them.

This is the problem with america... no one cares.... sure lets just pay what ever price the nation wide company sets.... lets not even try to lower the price... you want to be FAIR??!!?? to att... they don't give a rats behind about you... or me... they only want more money... when your on the phone with them trying to get something done, the guy on the other end of the line isn't thinking to him self... well this guy is a good customer... we'll be fair to him...

Who are you people???? Just because you have money doesn't mean you shouldn't care where it goes.

Any way I'll be upgrading regardless, but come on people... lower prices for everyone

PS. Long live Tony Benn

Yawn. This phone is completely affordable for it's target market, both the plan and equipment.

A petition? Seriously? Countless executives, business plans, negotiations, etc have created the plan that's available. The petition is a waste of time. The prices are totally reasonable and very competitive with offerings on other smartphones/pda phones and data plans from other companies. To lower the prices on plans or the equipment would be a very bad idea. As a stockholder I think the pricing is perfect.
