I somewhat agree about certain built-in apps, as you describe it, but as far as that kind of idea extending to automatically downloading an update to begin with and not even being able to remove it if you wish furthermore, that's certainly pushing it (despite it perhaps being within the EULA, although I would say that can and perhaps should still be questioned).

so what is your stance on Microsoft no longer supporting Windows XP and Office 2003 by April 8?

Doesn't this force you to upgrade to a newer version of Windows?

They are saying upgrade or no support..period. no argument

I'm not sure why that forces you. You still have a choice of using it without new updates. Nothing is downloaded onto your computer that you can't remove, nothing is changed on your computer to function any differently than it did before the support ended.

It seems that if Apple did that it would actually be along the lines of what people are asking here--stop support (which they are already essentially doing when a new iOS version is released), but don't do anything beyond that (like download an update to the next version automatically and not let you choose whether or not you actually download it or want to even have the download on your device).

I work for a software company. Come April if one of our Integrations does not work with Office 2003 we won't even attempt to resolve the issue because 2003 is no longer supported so the user has to upgrade their Office version to continue to use the integrations we provide.

Sure, or they can choose not to use the integration that you provide in a situation like that. Again, there are pros and cons, but there is still a choice and it's still left with the user. Nothing will automatically be downloaded to or from the user without their knowledge, and even if somehow that happens it's nothing that the user can't then at least remove or control if they wish to.

They supported Windows XP from 2001 to 2014... Good 13 years, can you just name one Apple product got supported for this long? Hell no.

Windows XP got supported for good 13 years, it is time for Microsoft drop the support. And no, they are not forcing you upgrade to Windows 8 by downloading the whole image without your agreement. There is no comparison.

Yeah, as you and CDM have demonstrated, the Windows comparison makes no sense. XP has been supported for twice as long as iOS has existed, and it's 3 major revisions behind the current version. Vista, 7, and 8 are all still supported. You're free to do as you like.

People not wanting the latest version, especially while it's still unpolished and potentially buggy, or in OP's case, doesn't allow proper use of essential apps, is perfectly reasonable.
