How on earth is killing some poor souls in a game better then seeing some boobs?

Americans and their strange double standards :

I went to a movie on an american army base in Germany a few years ago and people went to see Black Hawk Down with three year old kids, because in the other movie that was on there was a nipple shown on screen...

I personally would rather have my kids wanking at age 13 than playing with actual guns. But hey, that's just me.. I did the first thing and turned out quite fine... I have great muscletone in my right arm. :D

anyone angry at Target or Walmart for not selling porn? Why doesn't Best Buy sell guns dammit?!

it's their store...they can sell what they want.

You have the choice of going to another store.

I have great muscletone in my right arm. :D

ROTFL.

The rest of your post is a fine example of 'guns and violence are OK, but showing the human body is not'.

You just have to see the fuss over the 'wardrobe malfunction' - a phrase had to be made up for it. The uproar was unreal - blink and you missed the event - I bet over half of americans missed the actual event - but only saw what happened on the replay. A mountain out of a mole hill.

I'm wondering how long it will until Apple decide to control OSX Apps?

The day they begin to poison OSX with this crap (App Store for OSX would be the start), I start a project to migrate my home / office workstation infrastructure from Apples back to Windows or Linux.

Jobs is absolute control freak who will, eventually, limit the ability of apple to expand. Sure, now market share is all soaring but the reason is much more in competitors weakness, not the apple's strength.

Game is changing with Android maturing and Windows 7 out of the door.

Jobs better watch out.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I know kids whose parents got divorced. I know kids who were raised with single parents. I know kids who went through Hell on Earth being raised, poor and (sometimes) abused. I know a lot of these kids. I know a lot of kids whose parents stayed together, and were far less strict than you suggest.

They all came out fine. Got jobs (or at least trying...you know how hard the economy is these days), getting married, starting new lives (I even know a young girl who's got herself a house now. Her mom was a single parent)

I'm sorry you can't see far beyond your small town with its trailer trash, Moral Guardian Troll.

Would you rather those kids be raised in better situations?

Now, you go ask that young girl who just bought herself a house to see if she wants her kids to be raised in the same situation as hers. Just because there're some kids who were raised in neglected situations and turned out fine, DOESN'T mean neglected situations are good environments to raise a family.

I have to disagree with you on "they all came out fine". Look at the ratio of success between kids who were abused, neglected, etc... and those who were raised in better situations. You'll see a big different. Now, what's with the name calling? You think that will have any effect in my reasoning?

There're too many ways to access destructive materials (not only porn). Apple just made it 1 way less and people are complaining about it. Sigh....!

I fully support Apple doing this. It isn't censorship, it's choosing what they want to offer in their store.

If you want boobs on an iPhone, use Safari. Plus, anything to help filter all the untold crap out of the App Store is a blessing.

Bull. This is clearly censorship. Apple has (or is attempting to) restrict any application that is not approved by Apple. Given the lack of a proper (legal) alternative route, Apple needs to be held to a higher standard.

The porn industry has always been an innovator in the tech industry. You could make an argument that this censorship by a tech company is stalling innovation in the industry. (Source for Porn and innovation: USAToday)

Furthermore, Wikipedia claims censorship is "...the suppression of speech or deletion of communicative material which may be considered objectionable, harmful, sensitive, or inconvenient to the government or media organizations as determined by a censor."

Apple is clearly a media company in this instance.

Schiller is such a shill. (I just want to use that line. I have no problem with him, it just sounds funny.)

Shouldn't there be an opt out system, instead of just pulling the apps? Why can't it ask if you want NSFW material displayed in the app store when you sign up for an account? It would seem that method would prevent any censorship and allow us to save the children and easily shocked, while allowing innovation by the porn industry.
:D

WONDERFUL Point and the best perspective I've seen on the app store.

Apple's Store. Apple's choice of what to allow in the store. Just like Walmart or any other store.

If you don't like it, don't buy an iPhone.

I am getting a little tired of "you have choices" or "dont buy an iPhone if you dont like it". I ALREADY bought one! I ALREADY bought hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars of accesories. What line do I get in to get all of my money back...

Unfortunately it's not as jejune as that. Customers and Developers invest a lot of money and time buying an iPhone and/or tariff, and/or the iPhone SDK. Then Apple shift the goal posts, in a very underhand and selective way.

It's very easy and simplistic to say "If you don't like it go shop elsewhere" but I don't think it's applicable here. It's more comparable to holding a raffle to win a Mercedes SLS only to be told after your purchase that the prize for your ticket is now actually a Datsun Sunny, only you don't even get the Datsun now. :(

yes and no.

yes it will have a chilling effect on developers of low grade tittilation

but the overall effect is that developers will have to earn their money by using their creative endeavours to cater for something other than the lowest common denominator.

Obviously it will freeze out what is explicitly banned. But that is not what a "chilling effect" is. What I'm talking about is tamping down the motivation of developers who might need seductive or comical characters in games, or stopping development of photo-realistic sports games where clothes are tight or minimal, like beach volleyball. Or even educational flashcards for art students featuring the likes of Renoir's Seated Bather, or Manet's The Picnic.

None of these examples are especially titillating, and could enrich the App Store catalog, as opposed to the immature hackish bikini girl apps. However, if Apple draws too broad a line of what is acceptable in this area what developer is going to chance it? That is what I mean by having a "chilling effect." Stuff that might be acceptable doesn't get produced because developers don't have clear rules about what is 100% permissible.

When asked about the needs of the developers who were affected by the policy shift, Schiller said that while they cared about developers, in the end "have to put then needs of the kids and parents first".

Adolf Hitler
The state must declare the child to be the most precious treasure of the people. As long as the government is perceived as working for the benefit of the children, the people will happily endure almost any curtailment of liberty and almost any deprivation. (Mein Kampf)

Censorship in the name of benefiting the children. Just great. Apple already have parental control, it would be easy to extend this feature to include mature rated apps.

For everyone who did whine - here's a novel little idea for you: object to it by not viewing it and not paying the developers anything. Sound good? No? Why not? Oh, it's because you don't want anyone else viewing it either. God, thanks so much for thinking for me.

I didn't care enough to whine, but I did find all the boob apps everywhere when I searched for something completely unrelated (like a pedometer app) pretty rank and a pain in the arse.

I would be just as happy if they'd stuck all those apps in a separate "adult" section (with appropriate neon sign outside) which I would never have to see unless I wanted to.

Tbh though, I never thought they fitted into the image of the app store and was surprised to see them there in the first place. They were sleazy, tacky and cheap. And wholly unnecessary when you have a web browser on the same device.

Edit:

When asked about the needs of the developers who were affected by the policy shift, Schiller said that while they cared about developers, in the end "have to put then needs of the kids and parents first".

You are being idiotic

I can not beleive you purchased the iPhone for applications that have been removed. I would bet by your presence here, that you have had an iPhone since before they had applications for the phone.

The App Store is a little over a year old, these are the growing pains that will happen.

+1000000

Strict parenting is the reason some kids turned out better than most kids. The whiners here will never understand this. That's why they're still single or divorced or their kids are not in college. There're always exceptions, but very rare.

What a load of crap. Somehow my whole group of friends from university and work seem to fall into your category of "exceptions"... Oh, and me too.

Some of these apps are bordering the line of obscenity and that's a legal issue. If Apple just left things alone by stopping approvals but leaving existing apps in place they put themselves at risk of trouble should any of the apps actually cross the line.

And the fact that they are getting numerous complaints actually speaks to the notion that someone could decide to seek out a lawyer to make such a complaint.

What?? So now we are defining women in bikini’s and short skirts as borderline obscene?

I personally would rather have my kids wanking at age 13 than playing with actual guns. But hey, that's just me.. I did the first thing and turned out quite fine... I have great muscletone in my right arm. :D

If I had kids, I'd feel the same way. I said it before & I'll say it again: I'm a lover, not a fighter.

Many people have said looking at porn makes you more likely to rape someone. I'd like to see studies on this. I wonder if masturbation PREVENTS some people from raping people? You know, they get their relief in the privacy of their homes & not have to go out & violate people. Though the same may be true of violent games. Who knows?

The world needs less smut.

Agreed, there's a lot of it, and just a lot of redundant apps on the AppStore. How many fart apps & flashlight apps do we need?

There're too many ways to access destructive materials (not only porn). Apple just made it 1 way less and people are complaining about it. Sigh....!

I see your general point on nudity and whatever. But if the goal of Apple is to make this a better society, than would it not have been a better idea to remove some apps that show people shooting eachother than a few pictures of asian chicks in bikinis?

I'm sorry, but that's complete ********. FIrstly, PlayBoy and Sports Illustrated getting a pass because they also market other stuff? Puh-leeze, what kind of logic is that?

And oooh won't anyone think of the poor parents and oh-so-traumatized kidz?

Apparently they never heard of the age filter, then.

Read the article again. PB and SI present the material in a socially acceptable format. That means that it's tasteful and artistic, not blatantly degrading and objectifying. Personally, I agree with Apple on this. If you want to objectify women, then go to your neighborhood 'specialty' shop. Oh, that's right; those places are always in the bad part of town, aren't they? Or stuck so far out in the boonies you have to drive an hour just to find it.

1) The lack of girly apps is really a deal breaker for you?

2) If it is (find it hard that the lack of bikini girl apps would cause one to walk away) then unlock and sell it. I'm pretty sure you could sell on eBay and recoup your cost + cancellation fee.

3) $1,000s of $ on accessories? If money is that cheap for you I fail to see why you are complaining. I'm not exactly poor, but I can't fathom wasting 1,000s of dollars on iPhone accessories. I can't even believe you could spend $1,000s. Do you have 24k gold plated cases or something? If you are really hurting now, then maybe you need to learn to spend your money more wisely.

4) What you bought still works. Apple never stated that if you buy the iPhone bikini girl apps will be available forever. You have no beef in your argument.

5) Get a girlfriend and you won't need a bikini girl app -- she won't let you have one anyway. If you spend half as much on her as you do your iPhone you'll be golden. ;)

What?? So now we are defining women in bikini’s and short skirts as borderline obscene?

Yeah, it's so obscene! Better not take the kids to the beach! They might see a woman in a swimsuit!

The only reason Apple is making an exception for Playboy and SI is because they need all the magazine publishers on board for the iPad. It's all about money. Screw over the little guy while kissing the large corporate ass. It's not about the women and kids, it's about removing PB and SI's competition from the app store to get them to publish content for the iPad.

F*** you Apple. I'm done with the iPhone, as soon as AT&T releases a decent Android device, I'm done.

I'm sorry you can't see far beyond your small town with its trailer trash, Moral Guardian Troll.

So what you propose it expose all kids to Porn and they will come out "fine", have good jobs and healthy families?

I know nothing about you, but seriously consider your statements? Would you want kids to come from a borken home? Do you want them to have a single parent?

I'm not saying it is not going to happen, and I am not suggesting that the Apps on the App store would cause this to happen, however you sould like those are good situations?

We would want to avoid divorce, avoid single parenting when possible. It is going to happen, but lets encourage that to be the exception rather than the norm.

Its not OK for young minds to view this type of material, and while there is and will continue to be a debate if Apple should be a "nanny" for people who should be view this material.

The real problem with the material in the App Store is that the people putting the material were mis-catagorizing the applications and exposing people who did not want to see the material. The money grubbing people who would put this app in every category and make 500 variations of the same application are the ones that shot themselves in the foot. I suspect if they would have behaved it would have been a little less likely they would have been banned.

There are of course many other issues, others I have mentioned in other messages.

I disagree with the route taken. You can not leave "well established" brands while removing those that have yet to establish themselves. Apple needs to provide an adult section with the proper security measures instead of trying to use such a lame excuse.

Then clearly you don't comprehend the difference between a brand which is already established and already operates in multiple media, and some gold-rushing loser who nobody has ever heard of before any time, ever, who throws together 500 applications based on the crap on his hard drive.

Go out into the world, make your mark and prove you're not some moron gold-rusher with Xcode scripted into a loop, compiling one piece of garbage after another in his mother's basement. Then bring your adult-oriented stuff to the App Store as a serious brand and a serious developer with name-brand recognition, and earn some respect (or what little there is to be had).

It is a clear and obvious difference, and not the slightest bit lame. In fact it was quite honest and articulate.

why does apple remove boob apps but leave all the gun apps in the store? is flesh worse than force?

No. But nobody is going to mistake some stupid app for a gun or anything even like a gun. It doesn't do anything believably gun-ish. But the boobs are (relatively) real. Ish. Kind of. In that they act exactly like boobs. Again, relatively so. A picture of a gun is not a weapon. But a picture of a boob is porn.

this is a Slippery slope - how until Apple decide to remove another category of applications.

When you set up your porn store, you can ban Apple products arbitrarily and on any kind of whim you like. You're entitled to as the store owner. (See how that works?) The App Store is not the Internet. The App Store is not free speech. It's a commercial venture operated by a company. You protest the company's policies by voting with your money, not whining about it on forums and playing make-believe like your rights are being violated.
