It's obvious the iPad mini is quite overpriced, but so is most of what Apple sells.

That's the way it's been for years... why the surprise now... :)

It's no big deal...LOL

You know everyone keeps saying it should be priced $299... Really people? If $29 is your breaking point, why are you buying a tablet? Go buy your Nexus 7 and ask how the people who bought their 16gb version feel about Google updating it to 32gb at the same price a month later just to compete with iPad mini.

As far as the resolution goes, I'm still using 32gb iPad 2 and have no complaints about it. iOS 6 runs perfect, apps run just fine, even the latest games work with no problems. Having a smaller screen means smaller pixels so it will actually look a little better than the iPad 2.

In my opinion the value in the iPad mini is not the 16gb version but the 64gb version.

Why pay $329 for an iPad Mini when you can buy a 4th Gen iPad for $170 more?

Too expensive for what market it is made for. Looking for a price drop in the coming years.

FWIW, I think it sucks too. But increasing size has no effect on how well the tablet will perform in two years, how much it'll be updated or how many future features it gets. Doubling the processor? That will. Just look at all the iPhone 4's today without turn by turn.

I am just curious as I used to own a Droid a while back. Aren't most of the google apps, for the phone and not for the tablet?

What WAS meant to (but didn't) happen was that apps were meant to be universal to both phones and tablets starting with ice cream sandwich, but at the time no decent tablets ran ICS when it launched.

With Nexus 7 (Jellybean) and other tabs (like the galaxy line up) getting ICS updates it is not really an issue anymore. But Android is still behind iOS of course but I am sure things will balance out.

One thing I really like about Google Play though is that getting a refund of regrettable app purchases is so easy which sort of (but not completely) makes up for some pretty shocking apps in the android market. Not saying that iOS app store doesn't have it's fair share of dud apps but it seems that android apps when they bomb out bomb out in a major way, more so that iOS apps.

And what, 15 apps for it?

Apple is the master of deception, marketing and PR. They some how got everyone believing in this ecosystem when it really has a hand full of useful apps and a large majority of them (over 60%) are never used or downloaded.

http://blogs.wsj.com/tech-europe/20...-two-thirds-of-ios-apps-are-never-downloaded/

----------

Google Play: 675,000 apps, 25 billion downloads (September 2012)

iOS: 700,000 apps, 35 billion downloads (September 2012)

In Aug 2012, in the iOS app store: "400,000 of the 650,000 apps in the Apple iOS App Store are never downloaded, remaining invisible to users."

http://blogs.wsj.com/tech-europe/20...-two-thirds-of-ios-apps-are-never-downloaded/

Just a fyi

Ipad mini is old hardware parts, less than stellar resolution compared to retina (and compared to $199 nexus 7 and fire HD), a measle 512mb of ram, and older A5 processor. But it matters not! This thing is going to SELL fast! Typical smart apple for releasing "diminished" products while the real deal is a generation or 2 away.

I'd rather have a nexus 7 for 199, than an ipad mini for 330. Money to burn feels good!

In many cases the iPad has out preformed on lower spec hardware then competitors with better hardware. Hardware is only half of the solution. A better developed operating system to take advantage of that hardware which is needed.

I'm not sure why Android has to use some java Virtual machine to run its applications while iOS runs it natively. Which is probably part of the problem.

Apple's UK pricing policy is fast approaching the joke levels of the mid 90s.

£1 = $1.60 market exchange rate
£1= $1.22 Apple exchange rate

Or someone has forgotten to consider that UK pricing has the sales tax included in it but US doesn't.

$329 at current rate comes to £205.11, add in the 20% VAT tax and you get £246.13. the listed price is £269. That difference comes from import taxes and the fact that Apple only recalculates like twice a year (maybe 4 times now)

I think Apple may be missing the market here. The 7-8" tablet market is about more affordable pricing. I think the iPad Mini will steal more sales from the (more profitable/higher margin) iPad 2 than it will from Android. So it may not help Apple's bottom line much.

In any case, thanks, Apple, you saved me $329. Well, that is, unless the majority of reviewers conclude that the iPad Mini really is worth the significant premium Apple is charging for it. Then I MIGHT think about it.

I see you deleted your previously post but you were talking about storage space and yes we already know about the storage space. I did not say that the Nexus had more RAM than the iPad Mini.

What you expected of an answer and what your question asked are two different things apparently. You asked what would two extra cores would do and I answered. Formulate your question better next time. You never asked for benchmark scores.

I didn't delete anything. My post is still there.

And no, my expected answer was quite clear. Someone listed the quad-core of the Nexus-7 as a feature. Okay, if it's a feature, then show me with real-world examples how the Nexus-7 with it's quad-core uses this feature over the iPads with their dual-core.

My point is, it's not really a "feature" if nothing is done with it and so far, having a quad-core instead of a dual-core on these tablets doesn't do anything yet. If people are actually buying one of these tablets because it has a quad-core while the iPads only have dual-core, then why? What are they getting from that quad-core that they're not getting otherwise? Peace of mind? It's more like a Spinal Tap moment of "this goes to 11!".

I for one am a MBP user and a Nexus 7 owner.

I'm also tired, so very tired of all the utter hate for Android or anything not Apple.

For one, I'm not annoyed that there's now a 32gb model. Thing is, if you are a Googler, you've got the cloud in your hands. My 20,000 songs are streaming, all my movie rentals are streaming, all my books are in the cloud, all my apps are incredibly easy to install / and delete if I want.

All the blind Apple Sheeples who can't see past their unhealthy obsession don't get to experience interesting and different technology! Jelly Bean is AMAZING, everything is quick, smooth and fun to use.

People who complain about the apps, you should surf the Play store, and then play the Nvidia Tegra 3 optimized Shadowgun, Dead Trigger, Horn, Dark Meadow, etc and see for yourselves.

it's overpriced because it's basically an ipad 2 on a diet. had it been an the new ipad with a haircut i could understand the pricing.

i was really looking forward to getting an ipad mini. but now i thinking about going the nexus 7 or even a kindle hd (im a book worm).

and even if i do get an ipad mini im going to wait until after march because i know apple will do the d-bag move and add a better display and camera to the ipad mini.

All this talk about overpriced is justified.

If the ipad mini come with retina display, A6 processor, then hell any premium to be paid is worth it.

Otherwise, this is just a recycled ipad 2. $329 is a high price!

I might be buying a iPad Mini. If i like the feeling of it.

I also plan to buy a surface possibly, the idea is to have a mobile tablet around 7 inch to tether to my phone out and about and have a 10 inch for around the house. I'm just not a fan of normal sized tablets.

If you don't like it, don't buy it? Vote with your cash.

[price rant]

So let me get this straight, in the UK I can choose between

1. Brand new iPad mini 64Gb for £429
2. Refurbished iPad 3G 64Gb for £439

For an extra 10 quid, I can get the same storage capacity but on a device that has a stunning display and runs on a processor faster than both iPhone 4S and iPad mini.

I can see where marketing the base version at £269 can compete with other tablets who are not nearly as good but to me this price range seems to conflict with Apple's own products. It's almost like they've tried to pull a sly one and pretend the 3rd-gen never existed.

[/price rant]

Luxury and the product ecosystem

I think that Apple chooses to set their prices at higher than their competitors for a couple of reasons. One is that it helps cement the idea of their product as a 'luxury brand' compared to the competition; many people rightly point out that the internals in the iPad are no better than other models out there, and the Android ecosystem offers some comparable alternatives to apps in the Apple Store. Luxury watches, cars, and clothing rely on the strength of the brand and the implication of wealth they bring to the person who buys them, and the price helps cement the buyer's impression of quality and exclusivity. Would $299 or $249 be nice or more in line with what we *should* pay? Absolutely. But it would slightly undercut the power of the Apple brand and the premium it commands.

Secondly, the Apple ecosystem is tough to leave once you've invested enough money into it (one Business Insider magazine article put it best by saying "Apple has me by the balls"). We'll complain, fume, and look for better deals on it, but ultimately it will be bought because it is slightly cheaper and fits in with the content we have. The article is worth a read:

http://www.businessinsider.com/the-ipad-mini-is-too-expensive-2012-10

So I may finally break down and buy one once I test it out; the price, while high, is lower than the alternatives, and fits the product ecosystem in my house.

2. Why would anyone buy the iPad mini when they can get a REAL iPad for only $70 more? Makes no sense.

yes, it does make sense. There are so many ppl who love the iPad but dislike the size (too big for their taste) That's exactly the ppl apple is trageting with a smaller size iPad.

I'll break it down for you since apparently we were watching two separate keynotes yesterday.

What's so compelling about the mini? Portability, build quality, App Selection etc...

Missing GPS? I've had every version of the full sized iPad, and rarely have I used GPS functionality. That's what your smartphone is for(Whichever you choose).

Embarrassingly low screen resolution? You're complaining about the price now, imagine what this would cost if it had retina! These things come at a price.

Outdated OS?Microsoft windows has been virtually the same for over 15 years with it's iconic start menu, yet it continues to be the best selling desktop OS on the planet. iOS has had the same look, and feel for 6 years and all of the sudden it's "stale", "outdated", etc...There's nothing Android can do that iOS can't, and believe me when I say this because I'm using a SG3! Plus the app selection for Android tablets is embarrassing!

Overpriced music/video content?
Apple has set the standard with iTunes when it comes to music, and video. Only recently has Amazon decided to undercut Apple in the hopes to attract people to their services.

The bottom line is, it's unfair when the competition sells their products at cost. Because then everyone starts to claim that Apple is overpriced. I remember when the iPad first launched, everyone marveled at how low the pricing was in relation to what they assumed it would be. Then when other full sized tablets with dramatically less function started releasing at much higher pricing than the iPad no one complained. Fast forward 3 years, and look what we have here. I guess you really can't please everyone.

Agreed. I never understood why every Apple release is slammed by the Android Loyal crowd. We each have our favorite devices and have the right to purchase and use what we want.

Apple is in the business of making money. In the course of doing so they have set the standard with the original iPhone (yes Android was born as a "me too" type of product) set the standard for online music with iTunes, set the standard for tablets with the original iPad, etc...Their computers do not crash, are easy to manage and update, ..... But that is for another forum :)

Last time I looked, we were all free to make individual choices as consumers. Some folks like Chevys and others BMWs. They are both nice cars, get you from point A to point B, but you pay a premium for one because you choose to. Whether it is quality, lifespan, look/feel, it doesn't matter. It is a personal, feel good choice.

As for the $329 price point vs $299 argument ...... REALLY??? You are complaining about a $30 differential?

I personally choose to remain with Apple products. After going down the Android path with phones and tablets, I keep coming back to Apple. It would be nice if these forums would turn into informative resources as opposed to Bash - Defend sessions.

Don't forget to be heard and vote Nov 6th. Another great choice we have as Americans!!

Later .....

Correct. I have used the iPad1 & 2 for work purposes. I am retiring my iPad2 to my wife and purchasing the mini for its form factor. Traveling 4-5 days/wk I appreciate great function in a smaller footprint.

Actually if you are referring to the iPad2 (3G model. IPad 3 is LTE) it has the same processor and display as the Mini. Your comparison is slightly skewed as you are comparing pre-owned vs new. But you do at least have options to buy what suits your needs and wallet.

Nice .... :)

The price is fair. It's the lowest entry price for a new iPad.

Apple doesn't race to the bottom on price. They're in business to make money. (And some pretty amazing products.)

The thing is, you can buy equally amazing (and according to some people een more amazing) products for less.

Of course Apple wants to keep a high margin, that's the core of their business plan.

"The iPad is far and away the most successful product in its category. The most affordable product we've made so far was $399 and people were choosing that over those devices," Schiller said.

"And now you can get a device that's even more affordable at $329 in this great new form, and I think a lot of customers are going to be very excited about that," Schiller said.

So basically, we are getting away with $399 and sales are good, so why reduce the price?

Now we think we can still get away with $329 for a cheaper to produce device.

That's not an explanation, that's are "if you lot are stupid enough to pay it, we will keep charging it".

...Disclaimer... I will be preordering 2 in the morning :)
