An iPad can replace a computer only for non-tech savvy grandfathers like Phil Schiller, Tim Cook, etc. For other people it can't. iPad is even inadequate for children that work on Raspberry Pis since it doesn't support basic background multitasking that has been around since 1995 or earlier. If you leave a connected SSH session in the background on iPad or iPhone it gets killed after a few minutes while it runs indefinitely on desktop/laptop/Android. An iPad is just a blown up iPod with limitations and does maybe 10% of a laptop/desktop.

I actually think it's kind of the other way around. People that are holding on to the old traditional desktop mentality are the ones it cannot replace a computer for. Those who can think outside of what they have held on to for 20 years can't adapt.

Bingo. And the second generation chipset of these laptops are expected mid 2018 or whenever Samsung s9 is released. If a company mimics the iPad 10.5 with windows arm with an attached keyboard and mouse compatibility, I'm all over it.

I can't use iPad to write anything long because of a lack of a pointer device to instinctively and easily to go to a specific place in the document and edit it.

Another half baked failure is all it’ll be. Especially running those underpowered Snapdragons. People are kidding themselves if they think they’re going to run all their Windows software on an ARM laptop. If it can’t run everything, then you’ll still need a “real” Windows laptop for everything else. In which case why would you even want to own 2 Windows laptops (a real one and a gimped one).

And here we go with the condescending posts claiming all iPad users are non-tech, simple minded people.

No clue why you quoted my post to say that, but good on ya!

There were two quotes in there. You said "Wish they would stop trying to replace the computer and just make the tablet so good that I don't want to use the computer anymore." I said "That's what they are doing. They sell both."

Apologies for repeating but I think this is relevant for this thread. What I hope Apple will include in iOS 12:

*Improve Files App (no restrictions for verified apps like Microsoft Office needed for Mail Meger)

*Access USB & hard drive + protected

*Access dmg + protected

*iTunes (desktop version) for music, apps, and backup devices including the device itself without iCloud

*Mouse

If Apple does that, I’d be a happy bunny! :):p:D:apple:

I actually do a lot of my work on my iPad. My company is very iPad friendly, which makes being mobile very easy. However my desktop is a MacBook Pro with two external displays. If the iPad could become a “fake” desktop the way somsung dex works where I could hook up a Magic Trackpad, magic keyboard, two displays, etc. that would be very incredible.

I’ve always wanted a iPad that was iOS on the device, but connect it to displays and it became more MacOS.

It’s pretty apparent that most of you lack reading comprehension. Schiller clearly said the iPad can be either a supplement or a replacement for a more traditional computer. So either you fall into the first camp or the second. Either way, it’s stupid to complain about his comments and cite use cases where an iPad won’t work as it’s already been established that it won’t work for everyone.

Exactly, it’s like these people cannot understand basic English...
Exactly. I’m surprised by how many were triggered by someone from Apple speaking the truth.

My mother just upgraded to the iPad Pro 12.9. She’s been using an iPad almost exclusively as her personal computing device and decided to double-down by also purchasing the Smart Keyboard. This will be now able to do everything she requires from a PC - keywords being personal computer. That old Windows laptop is no longer required for some things she used it for. I doubt she will ever own a traditional computer such as a desktop or laptop ever again.

In saying that, at her work, she has a dual monitor Windows workstation. An iPad isn’t going to be able to replace that but I don’t remember Apple ever saying the iPad will replace your workstation. Yet, this entire thread is full of people saying that Apple is delusional because the iPad can’t replace their workstation...

For my workstation, it’s a supplementary device. I’m a web developer so I cannot rely on only an iPad as my workstation. However, it is supplementary to my workstation! I mainly use a MacBook Pro for my workstation as I require the portability. When I’m not at my desk, the iPad Pro is the ultimate portable monitor giving me dual screen support via Display Duet where ever I go. If you check out r/ macsetups on Reddit, it may surprise you how many people use an iPad as part of their workstations. I also require the iPad to quickly wireframe websites using the Apple Pencil. For me the iPad Pro is a pro device. However, as a pro device I think it’s meant to complement your setup not replace it.

For my mother, the iPad is her personal computer. For my personal computing needs (non work related), the iPad does everything I require quite easily and is my main personal computer when not working. As for my workstation, it is a supplementary device. This fits with everything Phill Schiller said.

People need to be mindful that personal computer does not equal workstation.

Phil is so out of touch it’s sad
Yeah but it only started on Timmy’s watch, see the connection?
Anyways it’s all bull, :apple:‘s never listened to / learned from its customers, a bit like SJ’s famous 50% of our users are switchers, never quite got how they got this magical unquantified figure, I & all my family never got asked & certainly was never any stats to back up that claim!

"Schiller claims that Apple "learned over the last few years" the "depth and love" that the Mac platform has by pro users.”

This is a shocking level of incompetency on Apple's part and shows just how out-of-touch Apple has gotten with its customers. You're just NOW learning that the people who used to be your bread and butter have a depth and love for the Mac platform? Perhaps if you had realized this earlier you wouldn't have crippled/eliminated the software that those pros rely on DAILY to get their work done. Perhaps you wouldn't have made asininely thin and spec-crippled "Pro" machines. Perhaps you wouldn't have eliminated pro ports. Perhaps you wouldn't have made that stupid trash can Mac Pro.

It's sad. There used to be a time Apple courted pros to its platform. Now they seemingly don't even KNOW what a pro Mac user is.

There is no way iPad "Pro" and iOS in it's current form can replace a PC.. mean it so limited..without. mouse or pointer..with s much incompatibility and restrictions..no file management..
forget about it.

If I had xCode on my iPad I probably wouldn’t touch my MBP again.
I don't know, trying to code more than a trivial amount without a decent keyboard and having to touch the screen a lot seems awful. I'd like to see it and I'd be willing to give it a try, but it seems like it would be awkward and slow. If Playgrounds on iOS is any indication, it's not a direction I'd want to go for "serious" (8+ hours a day) app development, even though I think Playgrounds is a brilliant app and learning tool.

Well I hate to break it to you, but it absolutely can. I use only an iPad Pro and an iPhone X for all my computing needs, work included.

The problem is how you're thinking about coding on an iPad. The traditional way of typing code isn't the way to do things on iPad. It needs to be more visual.
Apps like Codea, what still do code do it beautifully. They merge the touch interface and writing code making for a productive environment.

Then you have the opposite end of the spectrum. Complete visual programming interfaces. This is the approach we took with our app hyperPad. You can create mobile games using our visual programming environment. You drag and drop behaviours/nodes that essentially makes your code. We have a lot of the power you get with traditional programming, but in a completely touch/drag and drop environment. Now, we're not perfect. Still a lot of way for us to go. But it does work on the iPad :).

I'm starting to wonder if your work involves telling everyone that every single day :p

Mouse is not so much important in iOS world, but mouse needs to be allowed in third party apps. I actually believe it, citrix app I think allows it, but it is not mainstream. Remote desktop needs to have mouse available. I remote into my virtual desktop work computer from my personal mac anyway. I would love to be able to login into my servers/vdi from a mac and using a mouse.
I use the apple pen as a 'mouse' when on the iPad when I RD into my winbloze machines.

Sure, it's just because people are hung up and can't adapt....

It couldn't possibly be the actual limitations of the device that make it ill-suited to many tasks.

Calling a mobile iOS running device "Pro" is just Apple's way of trying to pretend that you won't notice all of the limitation inherent in a highly locked down device with a bobbed wire fenced, sandboxed file system.

Truth is: Apple slapped the "Pro" misnomer label on the iPad in an attempt to compete with the growing popularity of MS's Surface Pro - which can run a full desktop OS - as well as allow external equipment to be directly connected to it - such as: a mouse, hard drive..etc.

MS and Google have been steadily eating away at Apple's tablet dominance - especially in the educational environment - where Chromebooks are replacing the iPad as a far more affordable and flexible e-tool platform in the classroom.

All Apple created in actuality was an iPad Plus -which is really just a larger version of their decidedly non-pro tablets - but with a slightly larger screen and (for the first time) the use of a stylus.

Let’s be a bit more specific about how an iPad Pro can replace a mac - in particular the new iMac Pro with 18 cores and 4TB storage.

Give me an iPad Pro with 36 cores and 8TB storage. Then THAT iPad Pro can replace “the mac”.

I could see why people think this, considering how powerful the iPad Pro has been for me to use thus far, but it's DEFINITELY not gonna replace my Macbook Air or PC anytime soon. Furthermore, this commercial is hilarious yet obnoxious. xD
